  • My neighbours (Mainland Chinese) tell me they have one of these (the white one) and they can watch all the Chinese / Taiwanese / Korean / Japanese TV series and movies for free.

Can these units really do that> I thought these are legit and need a paid subscription.

    • +2

These are legit but just like a computer they can be "tailored" to meet the users needs. They can be used inconjunction with a paid service (e.g Netflix) or free service like YouTube or catch-up commercial TV. You can install Kodi.

      • so …. can watch all the Chinese / Taiwanese / Korean / Japanese TV series and movies for free ?

        • TBH I don't know because it's not the kind of content that interests me. You should Google it.

    • You can install Australian catch up tv apps, kodi and netflix

  • Is this model the same as the Xiaomi Mi Box 3?

    • +1

      International version with english

SO is that a yes or no?

        • +1

          Yes

  • Was this price previously without code https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355128

  • A bit embarrassed to ask , but can I load a Stan app onto this?

    • Yep any android TV compatible apps from google store you can install.

Comes with Netflix and Redbull installed by default

Thanks for your help mate. I'll grab one so I can have the Oled to watch sport on while the missus can go to bed and watch her crap.

        • +1

I got em for kids Netflix tvs. Don’t need fast gaming or expensive nuc boxes

  • Does anyone know if you can run up openElec or libreElec on these?

Also is the remote IR or RF?

    • Why would you want to, install the Kodi android app
I think the remote is bluetooth

      • I find that Kodi runs better in OpenElec than in android.

        • +1

I have nuc celeron and i5 kodi. And don’t see any issues with kodi on the Android tv for working movies, have played hevc 4K and x264 dts-HD ma and true-HD 1080p formats without an issue

    • You can run Kodi or SPMC (SPMC is a fork of Kodi but works with the voice search, though I believe Kodi were planning to add voice at some point).

Remote is bluetooth (and you can use an app on your phone to control it too if you want), though some people have said it comes with an IR receiver if you plan to use a harmony remote or similar (https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/59c64f/mi_box_ha…)

  • Thanks OP grabbed one.

  • Is Netflix in HD?

    • Yes up to 4k

The remote they show here is for the Chinese version of the MiBox. I messaged a few of these sellers (including the one in the link) to ask for the model number (so I could check that they were genuinely selling the international version, not the Chinese version) and all refused to give the model number, just saying to check the details/pictures on the listing. My take on this is that they're selling the Chinese version, and you will have issues.

      • Interesting, what's the difference between Chinese and International? And what are some of the issues? Do you have a link to any info or reviews?

        • From what I understand the Chinese version doesn't run Android TV and as a result will run netflix in SD 480P only, people have reported that there is no way to load the google app store (though others have managed to, and say some sellers pre-load it) and instead there is a very poor Chinese app store with basically nothing useful to people outside of China, and even attempts to side load apps causes issues. The Chinese version also comes with a different remote which doesn't have the mic/voice search. You can change the system language to English but by every report I've read there is no way to get a Chinese version to operate the same as the international version.
My issue with the listing is that they use pictures of the Chinese version but seem to list the specs (Android TV vs non TV, voice search etc) of the international version, but refuse to give the model number. Call me a cynic but I believe this is so they can state that they sent you what was in the ad and refuse any refunds if you don't get the correct international version. Price wise the Chinese version has always been at around the $60-$70 mark and the legit international about $20 more.

Quite happy to be proven wrong if someone wants to order it though.

      • What's interesting though is the GearBest one doesn't come with an AU plug but the eBay listing one does.

        • +1

Can't remember if I bought my last one from GearBest or one of the other similar sites, but they pretty much all chuck in an adapter for you based on the country they deliver it to.

In my humble opinion the SPMC app is a MUCH better fit, than Kodi, for this device.

    • Does SPMC have HD Netflix?

      • Just use the native Netflix app.

        • ?

        • +1

          @asa79:
Netflix is loaded by default onto the Mi Box - he's saying use the netflix app to use netflix, but load SPMC instead of Kodi for other stuff (locally stored videos and such).

        • @WazzaP: why spmc over kodi. Not heard of it

        • @asa79: SPMC is an unofficial folk of Kodi, and developed by a former member of the Kodi team. Available on Google Playstore.

It performs better on the Xiaomi box.

        • @rickb: Ok cool, can it connect to mysql and share information with other kodi systems in the house?

        • @asa79:
Being a fork of Kodi it keeps most if not all of the features of kodi and builds on them (giving you things like voice search) so I'm fairly sure it will allow you to do the usual kodi file/database sharing with other kodi/spmc systems.

        • @WazzaP: will have to have a look for it

  • +1

Yeh cheapest I've seen it, if it's the same, I can't see any difference but it hasn't been posted here and I can't believe that I could find a bargain :)

  • Eh. It's been cheaper before. Even from this seller.

Add that to already slow postage and possible further delays due to Chinese new year…

I'll get one of these some day.

    • Where is it cheaper at moment?

  • "runs on the latest Android TV 6.0".
Don't like to quibble (as it's still a good deal) but aren't Sony smart TVs running android TV 7.0, and Android tv 8.0 released last quarter 2017 ?
Or does OP simply mean it's the last updated version of android 6…
Would be great if an upgrade was available.

    • I dont think there is much in 7.0 that will stop functionality
