Might be worthwhile to screenshot the registration page just in case qantas doesn’t provide the correct SC. Last time when they had the 15k points offer, quite a few people didn’t get their allocation at all and Qantas made them jump through hoops to confirm their availability such as a copy of the registration page and/or T&Cs.

  • Worked for me even though I didn’t get an email about it. Useful as I’m going to lose gold in the next month. Might consider a status run of a sort.

    • +20

Here is my take on the Qantas stats levels and going on runs… TL:DR worth it for Gold if you're a few SC short of making it. Other tiers, don't bother.

      Silver

Little benefit. 1 free lounge pass when you acquire silver. A bit of extra baggage allowance and some tags for those bags. Use the business check-in counters when flying internationally. okish but meh. Absolute madness to consider paying for and taking a flight for this level.

      Gold

Biggest jump in benefits, lounge access is very good and includes the oneworld lounges. hefty increase in baggage allowances, plus they'd probably wave fees if you were a few Kgs over. Much better upgrade chances. Priority domestic security and domestic/intl boarding (very handy for securing space in the overhead lockers). Much more avail for award point bookings. Bags might be tagged priority, but this has virtually no impact on when they come out of the baggage claim flying with Qantas, might give some people a small boner to see PRIORITY on their bags. Other OW carriers do indeed prioritise your baggage sometimes. Lounge access is also good because you can chat to the lounge staff about seating, typically far nicer than the check-in staff. (i.e. they might try and find you an empty row in econ so you can sleep)

      Plat

Ok, not a huge jump from Gold. IMO certainly not worth spending a lot of money chasing Status Credits. Pick just about any seat for free Recently removed, they now charge you for seats they deem as "premium". Lounges are nicer but you get over them quickly. Have always been upgraded (when I request with points, although never complimentary). More baggage allowance than you could ever use, and they would probably wave any fees if you were over. Express pass access on international flights (handy overseas, but Australia is not so much of a benefit now they have the auto-gates, although it can be VERY handy when the quarantine lines go mental). Bags tagged as First Class, which means they have a small chance at coming out of the baggage claim first. Much bugger baggage tag boner. (and potentially stops other people mistaking your bag and taking it. Probably also makes it a great target for any thieving baggage handlers, yes this happens). Priority phone queue, I've never had to wait to speak to someone.

Plus plat has some more little un-advertised benefits:

      • Flying international economy you always get a few flight attendants coming to shake your hand throughout the flight, a bit weird but I guess it's better than being ignored.
      • If you do ask for something or press a call button they'll typically stop whatever they're doing and come running, also weird.
      • Similar to gold but they're more likely to be accommodating on any requests you might have.
      • Any disruptions to your trip will normally have a case manager sorting out alternatives for you, before you even know it.
      • Disruption re-routing you'll have priority over other pax when they allocate seats, typically a premium cabin if avail & the best alternate flights.
      • Heaps of availability for award point bookings, plus you can call and talk to priority staff (answer the phone in seconds usually) who usually accommodate you anyway they can. They really take their time on the phone with you, rather than rush you off so they can get to the next call. They will often personally take on requests and call you back to let you know how they're going.
      • Other OneWorld carriers will treat you very very well as an OneWorld Emerald status, probably better than QF does. I've had Qatar re-book my elcheapo award flight onto Eithad (in bussiness) and accomodated my request to fly me to a different destination in another country because of a flight delay. Plus a fancy hotel + spending money + meals. Worked out pretty nice actually, because I ended up with Virgin Gold status due to the SC earn with the Etihad flights, when you don't usually earn SCs on reward flights
      • They used to offer a lot of additional flight felxibility @ the first/business counter or lounge, regardless of your fare class. Say you arrived at the airport early and wanted to hop on an earlier flight. However they are unnecessarly strict now, trying to encourage more flexi tickets. Virgin on the other hand are GREAT when it comes to putting you on earlier flights, they've done it pretty much every time.

      Personally I'd never take a flight just for the status points unless I was a bee's dick away from obtaining or retaining Gold AND I have a bit of travelling comng up. But some do and it might make sense for them. Most of the benefits center around convince, which is very hard to put a value on for an individual. If I had to put a value on it, then I'd say;

      • Silver ~$50(what you can get when you sell the lounge pass),
      • Gold worth $1,200(compared to the the Qantas Club fees @$939 joining+1yr, access to OW lounges on all OW flights, quicker checkin & boarding, not needing to worry about luggage weights)
      • Plat maybe $1,800? For me the benefit above Gold is how I'd value the extra effort they go to with flight delays + a bit nicer food n booze in the lounge.

But it's very subjective and all depends on how much you fly. Fly a lot and plat has significant value.

      • International First class lounges wipe the floor of normal "Business" lounges. If you travel O/S a lot it's a definite step up. And unlike just say buying Qantas Club, not many routes offer First Class if the plane doesn't have it so in some cases it is something literally money can not buy.

Not that I could really put a dollar figure on it either if you had to make a decision whether to chase it or not.
Def agree Gold is the best step up though.

        • Agree, but if you live in Brisbane there’s no international first lounge and places like Singapore also have combined lounges. I’d say the general trend is to not offer first class, like the dreamliners and 747s, and have a combined lounge.

        • I'm not sure First lounges "wipe the floor" with the Business lounges.

QF International Business lounges are very very nice. I've always found them to have good food, plenty of room and helpful staff. First is better food, bit more room (some you can sleep in) and almost the same helpful staff. But I wouldn't put a significant value over access to the First lounge as the Business does the job for me.

Other OW carriers do have a big gap though. e.g. BA's lower tier lounge sucks and I wouldn't bother going to it, the one I tried in Heathrow. their First Class lounge (the OW Emerald, not First PAX) isn't great either but it's much better.

Of course, this is often irrelevant as the OW First lounges aren't in most locations where I fly (Continental Europe, Asia, S Africa and S America). Typically there is only 3rd party partner lounges, which are worse than hanging out on the concourse.

Maintain Qantas Gold in under $1800?

Melbourne to Bali (VIA Sydney stopover) in Business class return is usually between $1,600 and 1,800 depending on your dates.

One way the route gives you 160 status points, essentially X4 during this promo is 640.

As you need 600 status credits to maintain Gold this is at least the cheapest way I've found to retain.

Also, it brings you within 60 status credits to earn Gold for the first time.

Would love to hear other valuable "status routes" :)

    • +1

Good one. I think you might need another 2 legs anywhere (even in economy) to satisfy the eligible leg criteria

      • Already 4 flights with mel->syd leg…

        • You're right I missed that

    • Sounds good but seems more like that price each way (at best). I can't find anything close with a few quick searches. Example dates?

    • +6

Unless you really want to go to Bali isn’t it better to just purchase a yearly membership at those prices? Admittedly getting QC has less perks than SG but if the goal is Qantas lounge access then you should be set. FYI QC does not allow you to access other OW lounges so if that is your goal then real SG might be better.

      • It allows access to 'associated' lounges when flying on QF flights

        • Ahhh yes. Forgot that I’d your flight was flagged as QF them this is ok as well.

    • In for retain gold routes from Perth. I have lots of time on my hands…

    • I can see those flights last week on Qantas, but I cann't find any MEL-SYD-DPS flights today that is still sale price.

SYD-DPS flight is still bookable with the sale price, but only 120 status credit which is not enough for Gold tier.

      EDIT:
ADL-SYD-DSP is still available to book. Only MEL is not working. It gives you MEL-SYD-Jakarta-DPS which is like 2 grand each way

    • Besides the fact your fares seem unrealistic:

"The Status Bonus is applied to the actual Qantas Points earned when travelling in the Economy cabin. For travel in premium cabins, the Status Bonus is applied to the Flexible Economy earn rate"

      • This refers to points only not status credits.

    • +1

Just booked a flight from Canberra to Noumea return from 24th-26th Mar for $1,232. Gave me the following routing (Didn't need to use the multi city option)

      CBR > MEL > SYD > NOU for $615 and 140 SC
      NOU > SYD > MEL > CBR for $617 and 140 SC

Double SC nets me 560 SC and allows me to maintain Plat before it expires at the end of March :)

      • I just found out that the below is in the fine print;

"The Status Bonus is applied to the actual Qantas Points earned when travelling in the Economy cabin. For travel in premium cabins, the Status Bonus is applied to the Flexible Economy earn rate"

Still, it will be a generous bonus but not exactly "double" as they advertised… Classic Qantas.

        • I read that only applying to QFF points, not Status Credits.

        • The Status Bonus is applied to the actual Qantas Points earned…

It's refering to the additional frequent flyer points between Silver to Plat tiers.

If you are still unsure - Going by their website

          https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/flying/earning-points-qant…

Earn more with the Status Bonus
As you move up the membership tiers you could earn 50%, 75% or 100% more Qantas Points with Qantas, Jetstar. Eligible flights on American Airlines® also offer a Status Bonus#. Find out more about the Status Bonus.

When they talk about the Status Bonus, you can see here they are specifically referring to the points for each membership tier

        • @link90: Ahh, thanks for the clarification!

          False alarm then.

  • +3

    Dammit, booked flights last week.

    • same

      • -1

Same. Might ask if existing bookings can get the promotion

  • +2

Wow for bookings up till Jan 2019. Would be very handy for those people who know they'll be travelling for work a lot to make it easier to even maintain status after it resets end of July.

    • +1

Resets end of March for me, it depends when you sign up. But yes you are correct.

  • +3

I booked an international flight last month :(

  • I just booked a flight yesterday, wondering if I could call them and ask to be included in the promo

    • +1

Did the payment go through instantly? During a similar promo late last year, I booked (via Amex over the phone) at 1pm, activated the promo at 2pm and noticed that the payment only went through the next day. I got the points.

      • +2

Payment hasn’t gone thru yet. Hopefully it will happen just like it did for you. Thanks for the info.

  • Oh damn it, I just booked flight yesterday :(

  • +1

Sucks it's only for flights booked between now and 5th Feb though. Unless I book all my flights for the year up front, sadly won't help me :(

    • +1

no such thing as a free lunch: Qantas use it as a way to bring forward demand

    • If you know that you are going to fly to a client every week then I would book in advance a few months worth at semi flex so you can tweak your dates without issues.

I used to do that every time this sort of deal popped up.

My current client is a Virgin only sort so no more of those sort of perks. 😔

      • If you book a flex flight and then change the dates of that flight - do you still get double SC despite the change?

        • You should.

I did this. My new flight was within the eligibility window and I received the status credit bonus.

  • I've got the $450 credit with amex as part of the Qantas ultimate card. If I register for this and book a Qantas flight via amex travel would I still get double status points?

    • Yes, you would. Doesn’t matter who you book through.

  • +1

Damn. I need 250 more pointa for platinum and only just booked 4 flex flights yesterday!!!!
    Grrr

    • +1

… Just wanted to make sure you didn't forget to cancel and rebook.

  • Can you book flights with points and still be eligible for this?

E.g. 100% of fare paid with points
E.g. #2 50% of fare paid with points/50% paid cash

    • +2

Classic rewards - good value - no SCs
Pay with points (inc. partially) - poor value - yes SCs

      • +2

Unless you get the odd super special where the value of the Points plus pay/ASA (including Taxes) is the same as the cost of paying for it outright. In this case I managed to get a return MEL-LHR on an A380 in August 2017 for only 141,880 points +$667. Normally the flight would have cost me 120,000 points but went ASA (Any Seat Award) just so I could get the bonus 21,700 points (Gold QFF and to offset the additional points I paid for the flight) as well as getting the SC.

This flight was treated as if I paid for it with cash and so all the usual SC, points bonuses etc applied. If I had a Double SC deal on it, it would have also applied.

  • So at the bottom of the booking screen, it tells you how many credits you will get, this doesnt include the bonus right? When do you get the bonus? After the return flight?

    • +1

After each leg as QF credits per leg, not per booking. Usually a week or two. I had to get on the phone to them to ensure my bonus points came through before my anniversary date.

  • and will you get the bonus if booked via expedia or some other website (to avoid CC fees)?

    • Yes I am curious about this too. Getting a better fare on Expedia for my flights at the moment.

    • In previous promos I have gotten the bonus even though I made bookings thru a company travel website. I think it's as long as your QFF number is in there and appears as a normal flight in "your bookings" and stuff.

      • just tried it on expedia, the same fees is imposed so it's best to book direct with Qantas then, or maybe call up flight center, not sure if they charge a CC fee there too. Seriously Australia needs to do something about this. I never had to pay any credit card fees for anything in the US

        • +1

All things being equal, book with QF and immediately snapshot a cheaper price from eg Expedia for a price guarantee claim and bonus points. I did this with a premium flight to Latin America last year and saved around $500 (got very lucky)

        • +1

@zfind: Good deal. Make sure you include your computer's date time clock in the screenshot and make sure the site has an ABN displayed otherwise Qantas will reject the claim

        • @ReadingBooks4Fun:

          Did that, very good points

        • @zfind: does it have to be within 24 hours?

        • @macr0hard:
Yes. Of course you find the cheaper deal before you book, keep the window open, book QF, snapshot cheaper deal with clock showing later time and send through to QF

        • +1
        • @zfind: any chance of using the price match to get a whole 'change of mind' refund instead?

        • @macr0hard:

Never done it mate, unlikely as airlines are pretty notorious for being hard to get cash back from (when not explicitly stated in the fare rules)

    • Yes you'll get the bonus if you include your frequent flyer number. However If booking flexible for the extra SC earn, then thoroughly check the actual booking class for things like flexible tickets. Some 3rd parties may book less flexible tickets which Qantas may not count as flexible. In some instances this can mean up to 50% less in SCs.

      • That means it's a dodgy booking site then lol.
I get what you mean about "different levels of Flex" which I think is complete BS by Qantas because often you don't get a choice (you pick Flex, it shows a price) but they demand the difference to change the flight.
But in terms of SC earn it counts as flex if it's a Flex type ticket, even if the exact class letter in the fare details is lower than the other Flex types.

  • Thanks heaps OP!

  • Would this stack with the emirates deal, seeing they are in partnership?

    • You don't get Qantas status credits if booking on an EK flight number.

  • Very early in the year for QF to run this promo..? Last year it was in Mar and 2016 was April?

    • Seems every 11 month.
Next year will be in January ;-)

      • Ha, yes I was thinking that too, except everyone will be on holidays if they do early Jan!

        • last year they had a mid year bonus again around Sept I remebered

  • Just about to book for Mel -> Jakarta, outbound flight is 11 Feb, return legs is 15 Feb & 16 Feb. understand that the outbound is outside the travel period so no status, but will Qantas honor the return legs given the flights are during the eligible period or just knock back the whole booking? What’s your read on the conditions?

  • Does anyone know if this also extends to OneWorld flights booked on Qantas.com?
