Description:

Xiaomi dafang HD Smart IP Camera

6pcs 940nm infrared LEDs are added for security guarantees at night or in dark places.

Main Features:
● Built-in microphone and speaker, support two-way remote dialogue
● You can get to know the situation where you want to know by phone or tablet at anytime or anywhere
● Observe the photograph and video whenever necessary
● 120-degree wide-angle lens brings a sense of immersive screen
● Playback at anytime, in addition to real-time viewing, it can insert a SD memory card to store video for look at any time
● Please download APP "Mi Home" from Apple Store or Google Play

My notes
● Supports SMB1 router storage for recordings
● Options available for persistent recording
● Native RTSP available in latest hacked firmwares
● Blue light of death? Factory reset the device - hold setup until the orange light goes out, release, let it spin, setup again
● Features like motion detection + smoke/co2 detection
● Works only on 2.4GHZ not 5.0GHz WIFI
● You need to set a password on your WIFI system; it wont allow open wifi - AES on the earlier firmwares caused a kernel panic, not recommended

Want to hack it?
Load a new firmware on it!

    bought a couple of dafangs

    Found you Broden!

    • +2

I actually need the dafangs for a commercial purpose (work) - we have heaps out there. Probably one of the biggest AU buyers of them, have 300 deployed +. Hit up the rep for a deal; then he threw in the code with 100 units - great rep.

      • How much wifi usage they use?

        • +2

About 100KiB a camera when streaming to a device; basically nothing when not. We have 100/100 or 400/400 to each centre though and about 20-30 cameras a centre.

Using local NAS storage presented as SMB1 for persistent recording etc.

Switching to RTSP lowers the draw, but its early days and stability isnt the best on the new hacked firmware.

        • Not up to date with these cams. What does the new hacked firmware do?

        • +1

now gonna ask this guy for a photo like drone post lol

        • @OzyBe: H264 RTSP, same as xiaofang pretty much.

          Actually more.

H264 rtsp is the big thing

outside that, anything you want. ssh into the unit; still need the dev kits and compile on a real machine, but shoot across what you want really.

          Hacked wide-open

        • @MorriJ:

Curious, how are you recording to NAS?

        • @bamzero: Newer firmware allows dumping to an SMB location - export NAS share as smb1 and set it as the gateway for the units.

Setup folder /TDDOWNLOAD/xiaofang/ without authentication and it will drop the stuff off there.

        • @MorriJ:

How do you save it to NAS without the hack?

        • @DanielR: Newer firmwares allow dumping to a router SMB1 share.

        • @MorriJ:

When you say set it as the gateway, what exactly do you mean?

The app says only for Mi routers, I can't see where I can change it. Seems it only wants to look at \\XiaoMi

(BTW, thanks for taking the time to respond to all the questions. Bet you didn't think you'd have to do so much support work by posting a deal ;)

      • we have heaps out there

        What do they do?

        • Monitor waiting rooms mostly

  • Thanks OP, just bought one 😊

  • 50 cameras, webcam shows must be popular

    • Did you know you can bind these together in the app and get 360 degree view? Great for earning extra $ as the housemates also interest the www

      • -2

sweet help me set them up in my toilet.
im sure i could sell VR of me pooping

        • Xiaomi have you covered already; pre-order this:

        • No way I am buying that crap.

        • @Martijn: It's not crap. You're meant to put your crap through it.

    • Could set up a pretty neat bullet time style camera rig.

  • Are these ones OK to use in Australia? I brought a different model and it only works in China mainland without hacking….

    • Xiaofang's were crippled as they have a US and EU version. They gave up figuring out who was in the US/EU vs China and blocked all non-chinese IPs.

The Xiaofangs still work, just not as intended.

The Dafangs have not had any restrictions placed on them as yet and there doesn't appear to be a reason to block them like they did with the Xiaofangs.

On the Xiaofang note, they will unblock them if you have bought a region specific one, just lodge a support request (no english channel to request though).

These work in Australia, always have and hopefully always will

      • thanks!

      • I ordered 4x of the xiaofangs from litb and found out the hard way, mates have heaps and no issue.

I sent a email to xiaomi and requested they be unlocked {all 4x mac addresses} - this is via the complaint option -
        …… and they said no on all four. {i can post the email up for any interested peoples}

Is it worth keeping the xiaofangs and hack the firmware or not ?
        - i have not tried the hacking option

I requested a refund from litb and sent them the email from xiaomi.
They gave me 4x rma's near immediately … good service :)
Now do i send them back for a refund or keep them…

I did purchase one these Dafang cameras on Nov 29 last year and it arrived after the xiaofangs. I thought it would not work too but it has surpirsed me the camera works brilliantly ! 8/10
so i got 2x more now :) thanks op , ozbargain and rep for telling me to make 2x accounts lol.

        • OK, what do you want to use them for? With current firmware you cant use them via the Mi App.

          Alternatives:
          - 3rd party system to integrate the feeds
          - Flash firmware, enable RTSP streaming
          - Use 3rd party system to capture and broadcast (emulate the mi app thingy)
          - Access camera only via wifi @ home

Could you post up or pm me the email correspondence? I want to see as I know people (within my company) who have had theirs unlocked.

        • +1

          @MorriJ:

Hi, sure i requested the unlock with the receipts from litb and also all the mac addresses.
this was the reply… yes it was in chinese and english , note the chinese is translated scroll down…
i think the issue is the do not treat litb as a official reseller to the international market.

        • @MorriJ:

The usage is just for feed on the cats , maybe security but i have a netgear arlo pro 2 kit and sirens sensors etc.
I just like having feeds of different locations around the house.

        • @BilboBargains: Ahh if thats the case, definetely hack it. You get RTSP out of them then.

Once you load the hack (doesnt take long to do), just hit the url of the unit for RTSP - can use VLC player, anything really.

If you already have a security system that takes RTSP streams, add it to it and then can access streams remotely etc.

The hack just makes turns them into IP RTSP cameras; perfect for what you want ot use them for.

        • Hi Mate
Would you plz advise me how to connect properly. I did and in mi home app it shows connected but when I try to open the video, it says cannot download. Am I doing something wrong? I Choose different locations but never able to connect it properly. Its aboit the dafang camera.
          Thanks

        • @Donask:

          Hi mate,

i am not 100% this is your issue as i have never seen that but i would first go to your settings and choose the mainland china server , add ya camera and then see how it goes…

      • @MorriJ. Have you got email to lodge a support request unlock xiaofang camera? Thanks a million

    • Awesome, thanks guys!

  • Can anyone explain to me how you can keep the video recording when your phone screen switches off. I'm assuming I'm missing something completely obvious?

    • +1

SD card inserted into the device?
If so, go the camera in mi app and select … top right, advanced settings then storage … its all there.

      • Yes thanks for that but it appears it is just the option to Auto record via the motion sensor. I was hoping to be able to just turn it on and off. And yes I do have an sd card installed that it recognizes. Cheers

        • Sorry, what do you want to do? My language tonight is terrible.

Turn on and off? persistent recording? Go into recording mode?

Under Detect the Alarm, you can switch on and off motion detection.
Under storage management, you can have continue recording enabled, uninterrupted record or record only when moving object.

        • @MorriJ:
I was just hoping for an on-off option without having to use the motion detection to trigger it. I know I can record but as soon as the phone screen switches off that ends. But unless the setting is buried I'm pretty sure it's not available happy to be corrected. Thanks

        • @iamkanga: It's there.

You want the camera to always record, regardless of what the phone is doing?

          Go into:

          Advance Setting
          Storage Management
Continue Recording - Switch that on (always record to the sd card)
Recording mode - Switch that to Uninterrupted recording 24 hours non-stop video

Will always record to sd card now.

        • +1

          @MorriJ:
Yes I did see that my small brain just did not compute it as an on-off option. Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me. I will monitor your future posts for other tips. Cheers

  • Anyone know how good the motion detection is? Can it be set up to take a series of photos say 1 second apart when the motion detection is triggered and email them to me? My old and now defunct Linksys WVC54GCA webcam (from around 2007 I think) could do that. I'm now looking for a replacement…

    • +1

basic motion detection is enable it.

When it detects motion, will send your phone an alert and alink to the video of the motion.

You can go in and view historical moments based on motion which are stored on the sd card.

You could also run a custom firmware and rtsp with motion filter enabled and have it email to you photos, but thats not really what the unit is designed to do unfortunately. I havent looked too far into the motion detection and jpg imaging.

Motion detection will pick up a bug in the night that flies near it.

      • Cheers

      • I have 2 xiaofangs and 1 Dafang. I noticed several weeks ago that the motion detection videos no longer download (on either camera model). All cameras still work fine, except the video download. You still get a notification and can then use the 'Look back' feature, but this is a bit tedious. I also have a Mi Wifi 3 with a HDD attached which I use to back up the video. Unfortunately this feature has also stopped working on the xiaofangs but still works OK on the Dafang. It's a real shame how they have restricted these. I quite like how compact the xiaofang is. I have one pointing out the front window and was great for getting motion clips when someone came to the door. (Also, I disabled the motion detection in the camera itself as it was way too sensitive, and instead, connected it to one of the xiaomi body sensors for motion detection. This works great).

  • Thanks OP,

Is there a way to record to a hdd via wifi ?

    Thanks

    • Yep, go into advanced settings, storage management

video is dumped to the router ->

      Supports SMB1 shares

YMMV, I know this stuff well and struggled to get it working to a proper SMB share. I ended up using a router on location for the device, they use it as their gateway and it has a share on it with the folder they need (under the video is dumped to router setting)

  • What do most people use these for?

    • +1

Cheap way of checking your house from a smartphone

      • Ditto. I’ve got mine set up as motion detect (got 3) in a few entrance/exit area at home

        • When the motion detection is triggered how does yours alert you? Do you get a link to a few seconds of video or a bunch of photos? Thanks

        • +1

@alan77: message notification from the Mi Home app. Once I access the app, go to the camera and download the 15-17 seconds clip

        • @Shuey: Many thanks

    • Finding out which dog/owner keeps pooing on your lawn or find out what your cat/dog is up to during the day

    • Friend of mine pulled out his phone and showed me 4 rooms with a camera, he paid $600. Am sure it was a fancy set up, I showed him my single camera setup (didn’t need or want four cameras) and told him I only paid $34 (an older Xiaomi)

  • Finally got one, thanks OP. Do these come with a power adapter or just run off USB?

    • USB powered, comes with a 2m flat white usb cable.

      • Hey MorriJ, what's your opinion in putting this Dafang for outdoor cam?

        • They get hot in 30 deg + and shut down; so to fix that, attach a temperature sensor and when they reach 30 degrees ambient, fire custom event to shut down.

I've used the xiaofangs outside and as portable security cameras (both battery backup + solar panels). Use a temperature/humidity sensor on it as well with a custom job to shutdown if too hot.

I fried a few of the xiaofangs - oops.

I think the xiaofangs are more suited to outdoors.

        • +1

@MorriJ: Yes my xiaofang has held up well outdoors (under shade) seen multiple 40 deg days so far so good.

    • Usb power

    • They come with the power pack and usb cable required.
Only issue is it is a us plug.
The xiaofangs came with a travel adapter supplied from litb but the last dafang i purchased from litb did not.

  • +2

These are great cameras, thanks OP

I ended up getting one too, my house has those Xiomi devices everywhere now thanks to you guys ;) Thanks OP!

  • Expired :( reached limit

  • Bugger code no longer works

  • So it says "Sorry, your coupon has exceeded the maximum limit for usage." That was fast!

  • code exceeded :(

  • all you guys buying these are in for a pleasant surprise. I bought 4 xiaomi cams and none of them work. All blocked on the Xiaomi MI gateway.

you can hack them to stream but the code is pretty flaky and you need a microSD card in each to bootstrap them.

LightInTheBox should do the right thing and warn non-Chinese residents.

    • Which camera? Xioafang? You were pre-warned if so, it was known for months they were locking them down. And for the price, given you can hack them, it's all water under the bridge :).

  • Hi All,
I accidentally found a matching price for this camera here https://www.zapals.com/xiaomi-mijia-dafang-1080p-gimbal-ip-s…
    No coupon is required.
    Thanks Google :)
    Enjoy.
