Steam Link + $20 Steam Credit $29 @ EB Games

840

Doesn't seem to be apart of EB's manager specials, so looks like it is a seperate deal. $20 Steam Credit transfers to $16 USD credit on steam.

Enjoy

its a great deal, the only thing is the $20 AUD credit is actually 16USD for steam.

This was previously the managers special which has been posted, but its good to still let people know its available.

  • Can it do anything more then just steam?

    • +5

As long as you have Steam running, you can alt+tab/minimize Big Picture Mode and use all of your PCs features.

I've played Battlefield 1 through Origin on my Steam Link.

Fantastic little unit, especially at this price.

      • -8

So its not a standalone console?

        • +6

No. If you read the description you'd know that.

        • +4

its basically a wifi HDMI cable that is compatible with a lot of controllers

        • +2

          For $30? No.

        • +1

          @potplanty: The description says:

        • Or ethernet.

    • +3

It also grills, toasts and bakes with add-ons.

      • Wife DLC.

    • +1

You can add practically anything to Steam so yes?

  • Seems new price for steam link is $9.

    • +4

It's a reasonable price just for the HDMI cable in the box :D The steam link is a bonus

      • +4

Also has a neat flat black Ethernet cable.

        • Flat cables aren't twisted

        • @asa79: Still cool looking (and that is all that matters, right?).

        • @Namesareapain: depending if you want full speed or not. Tho given its only a 100mb ethernet, it shouldnt matter to much

      • What about the HDMI Cable. That's probably worth $5 alone. I didn't use it but i used one of my Monster M2000 HDMI cables. :)

    • Hardly. Price is $89.95 at their full price just for Steam Link itself. But seriously no one would pay that price now.

I've got good NBN and good router, I should really pick up a few of these. They are always sold out when on sale tho.

    • +5

Nbn / internet speed won't make a difference. Nor a fancy router (unless you're gonna try with WiFi). Just an Ethernet connection between pc/router and between router/steam link is the most important thing.

    • +1

Internet connection makes no difference for these, it all relies upon your home network whether it will work well or not.

      • +12

I just like to boast about my real NBN.

        • Did you just say'real'NBN? I'M OFFENDED

        • I've had the real NBN for nearly 7 years lol. Seems like we are overdue for gigabit by now?

  • +1

    Sold out online it seems

Pick up for me is not to bad … only 365KMS away… :(

  • I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and the staff member didn't know about the deal. They said they'd be buying one as soon as they finished work.

  • I grabbed one of these last week when it was a managers special. Incredibly impressed by how well it works (I'm playing via ethernet cable, not WiFi). The latency is non existent when at full settings, and using an Xbox One v2 controller wirelessly.

    • +1

Depending on how close your pc is to the Tv.

As for me just easier to grab a 4 metre hdmi cable running straight from gpu to the Tv. :/

      • Depending on how far your controller is to the PC and if there are any obstacles in between(most likely will be), you'll experience interference and/or controller disconnects especially when you're using a headset with this setup. The Steam Link minimizes that problem.

        • No problems here with wireless xbox controller.

Just noticed you don't need a
Bluetooth dongle connected to link witch is a bonus for steam link users.

So would be good for double story house's where pc is running upstairs while link down stairs connected via ethernet. :)

  • +2

I want one but I dont know what for, or what I would even do with it…

  • Well FF12 is out Thursday on Steam. Might put it towards that.

  • -1

    Dupe.

    • +1

please let me know where the dupe is? I double checked on the site and most of them were expired.

      • +1

There was a managers special post a while ago, this was listed as a sub-item of that.

        • That previous post was why I bought mine. Nice little unit, good bonus to go with the Steam credit :)

      • what happened to your pug avatar

  • +2

It's probably a niche problem but I bought one of these at the start of this sale and found a hitch. My monitor is a different resolution to my tv (1920x1200 vs 1920x1080 for the tv) and it's very hard to get some games to play in the correct resolution; they'll be stretched or in a black box. I wasn't able to find an easy solution to this.

    • What's wrong with black box anyway, shouldn't you want the intended aspect ratio? And it's only 60 rows of pixels on top and bottom, you'd hardly notice it.

  • +2

You can enable SSH on these, add a file to increase the bitrate and even install Arch Linux ARM in a chroot (have not tried this yet).
Though be aware that the SteamLink only supports limited RGB, not Full RGB for some odd reason.

  • Had to visit a couple of stores in Sydney just to find one. Damn thing is sold out everywhere.

  • I bought one just then online with pickup from a store and they called me saying they couldn't do it. Apparently the deal ended yesterday so all they can do is offer me a refund.

    Oh well.

  • Is a Steam Link essentially a Chromecast for your PC? So I can just turn a normal TV into a 'wireless' HTPC right?

    • +2

Something like that (even runs the same SoC as the first gen Chromecasts), but unlike the chromecast you can only stream what is on your PC's screen to the SteamLink, it can not be told to play media files and then allow you to use the PC for other things.

      • -1

Wrong, there's a port of RetroArch and Kodi to this thing.

Only does certain formats under Kodi and it's a little unstable but it works.

        • Sod off, I am clearly explaining what it does by default and that unlike the Chromecast you can not just "cast" media to it.

  • +1

sold out pretty much everywhere in melbourne

    • yep only a few left in country VIC which is even more annoying as I was right beside one over the weekend!

  • Thanks OP. Got lucky have one in my area.

  • Same deal but seperate. Never miss a chance to repost with impunity.

  • Link not working anymore.

    Dammit missed out.

  • Just went to eb in southern adelaide. Told me pretty much all other stores are out of stock.

  • Cheers OP,
Got one in NSW - Macquarie Centre. Ordered about 20mins ago and just got a confirmation now that its ready for pick up.

  • This should be still $29 in store.

  • Ordered one for pick up from the store and then got a call from them saying that the deal is not valid and they are cancelling my order.

Was advised that the price was incorrect.

    • Last time i saw it was correct.

      • Yep it was still listed on the website for $29…maybe it's just staff leaving it aside for themselves…but FYI the link for the deal is now gone…

        • How convenient for the staff members.

        • Would be a good idea to complain to their head office.

  • +1

I bought one of these a year or so ago and could never get it to work properly. One controller was fine but as soon as i connect 2 (Xbox 1 controllers) it would get confused and one controller would control both players with the same moves.

    • I wonder if it would happen if you had two Steam controller pads instead. Probably not.

  • Dammit… Missed it.

    • Well this had been selling for $29 in store for weeks so you've had some time. So no excuses there to miss it hey.

I bought two of them about a fortnight ago at the local EB Games store for the $29 each. It all had $29 stickers on them.

      • Haha ive even putting it off for ages (I recall it was on sale end of last year too).

Only decided to get it today and the promotion ends!

        • That may have been a mistake putting it off. Who knows if this is going to be at $29 again it might not ever again. Oh well.

        • @hollykryten:

Didn't think I really needed it since my computer is in the same room as my TV.

Then I realised I could use it to play pc games on my bedroom TV. Ah well too late!

  • OOS already, must of had about five to sell and they've all been claimed by staff.

    • It's been on sale for weeks. Plenty of stock until today.

    • They have been this price since mid-january right?

Been pushing them out the door for weeks. Can't blame the staff this time.

      • +1

Yes. I got my 2 x Steam Link + $20 Steam card $29 each and Steam controller $60 around middle of this month.

The thread says expired but i can tell you that the Steam Link + $20 Steam card for some reason remained after wards at $29 until today, two weeks later.

Picked up 1/1 at Belmont in WA. The manager there didn't seem too happy and said "you're lucky mate they went back to their normal price this morning".
I then asked him what the normal price was and he says "$90 bucks"… I laughed and just said righty-o mate. (Seen em on here before a few times at $29).

For $9 (technically) I'm not complaining.
Good deal. Time to find a few good co-op games to play with the missus.

    • Just some easy to play games.

      Castle crashers
      Rocket league
      Hotline miami
      Flatout 1 and 2
      Skyrim
      Worms
      DragonBall z
      Tekken 7
      Trine
      minecraft

  • Thanks for the reminder bought this a while back and put it away.

    • I'm using one i bought earlier and i've got a second still sealed in the box and packed away in case the one i'm using becomes faulty. And who knows if at ever this $29 deal is going to come up again.

  • Just played 2 hours straight of rocket league with PS3 controller,

PRO TIP; Remember too turn off the original console first, before attempting to connect via Bluetooth. :|

  • I got it from innaloo EB Games store last week and play Dirt with my keyboard… work great
