  • WoW good price especially after TRS.

    • +4

Technically TRS is supposed to be on a max value of $900.

      • +3

That's wrong. I have claimed GST back on $3000 laptops and $10000 jewellery.

        • +7

Once you go over 900, you're supposed to declare the items on your return and repay the GST. Its no different than buying $900+ worth of items overseas, you'd technically then need to tick the box on the immigrations card.

Whether you do or not is upto you but gmail92 is correct when it comes to your legal obligation.

        • @sheepdog:

Oh yes, that's true. No one ever checks your laptop on the way home. Just chuck some stickers on it.

Same goes for jewellery. Just wear it or put it in your bag. I just gave the ring to my girlfriend to wear.

          @smuggler: username checks out.

        • +1

@boohooimissout: haha I was going to say that, username = valid story

        • @smuggler: Wouldn't they flagged you if you claim over $900 of GST?
On the way back if you didn't tick that box, they may put you in shame by taking out everything inside your luggage and record everything and put it on TV.

        • +1

          @boohooimissout:

Wouldn't they flagged you if you claim over $900 of GST?

Give it to your travelling partner then.

I have done it like 20 times. Gonna keep doing it until I get caught.

        • @smuggler: I usually travel alone or with business partner.
I don't really feel comfortable asking them if they are ok with smuggling lol

        • @smuggler:
Once you do get caught, you’ll be flagged and on every future arrival you can expect your back door probed…lol

      • +2

unless your travelling with a partner or in a group then you can pool it

      • +1

If you want to declare it and bring it back into the country else no limit.

      • $900 per adult, $450 per child.

Therefore if two adults travel, that is $1800.

    • -3

So, worth an upvote then? ;)

      • The TRS would be base on the 2000 price, so about $183.

        • TRS is based on the final price you paid as per the invoice. If they invoice you $1999, then you are correct. They probably shouldn't be doing that.

      • -5

I got downvoted for suggesting that someone who posts "WoW good price" clicks the '+' button?

    • How do you claim trs when you live here? How does it work?

  • Why Why Why no 4g. Should be standard. Im still stuck with my POS Samsung Tab pro (And a surface pro 3 and 4 sitting in the shelf)

    • Yeah, I've never understood why all decent tablets (iPad, Samsung etc) offer an LTE option, but high-end laptops very rarely do.

      • +3

Because you can get a 4G Hotspot working from your phone or have a 4G Wifi Model for less than $20 whereas a WWAN card costs upwards of $150 for the manufacturer !

        • Are the WWAN parts for use in tablets not that expensive though? If they can justify the extra tablet SKU, I'm not sure why not for popular notebooks.

    • Do any of the telcos still have decent deals with getting an extra data sim pooled into your plan? Back in the day, Optus allowed something like a one off $10 fee for an extra sim but it seems you need a plan for each sim now.

      • Pretty sure 1 extra 'data only' SIM which uses your plan's data pool is standard with pretty much all Telstra plans nowadays.

      • Certainly not available on Optus any more. Cheapest you'll pay is $15 a month for that extra data sim (with 3GB data to add to your pool).

Source? I tried to do this myself just this month.

        • +1

5 dollar additional per month for data share sim with Telstra.

        • @Ragnarok1983: Nice! That being the case, I'm shocked that Optus got rid of their competing $5 per month data sim!

    • My samsung tab pro was $70 mth for 100gig PLUS $33 mth for device. But generally crap.
Now use my Acer Predator with extension cable to the car UPS for power. for my coffee shop work.
3 lappies on the shelf. very disappointing.
I do a lot of video rendering.

      • +4

Did I read that right - you sit in a coffee shop with an extension cable to your car?

        • Acer Predator 17" i7, 16 gig ram with GTX1070
Everything I need except battery power and 4G

So dual battery in the 4wd with Invertor.

I can work anywhere and hate working at home. So hang at the beach coffee shops is my most productive.

        • @australiabpo: Ha. Yes, I can see how a rig that powerful wouldn't last too long on battery alone.

    • eSIM is coming :D

  • Anyone have experience with this laptop? I'm tossing up between the Lenovo X1 Carbon and Surface Book

    • +1

Its great. A little slow after the Meltdown patch, and the screen is not as good at the iPad Pro, but you can do a lot more on it than the iPad Pro.
Not worth it at the RRP, but for $1600 its great value.

      • Hmm. I wonder if that meltdown patch will improve over time. Feedback (from Linus Torvalds etc) has been pretty poor on how well executed the patches have been. (I'm speaking from complete ignorance, other than a few headlines that I've seen).

        • There is a way to uninstall the Meltdown patch on Windows 10, so I may do that.

    • Not quite sure why should I get Surface Book given cheaper alternatives with better spec, like Lenovo Yoga 720 or Dell XPS 13.

      • Not familiar with the Yoga, but do they detach? Similar screen resolution?

        • Ah yes… Yoga doesn't detach, but it does yoga (rotate 360 degree). The screen resolution that is 4k, with 512 ssd (apparently 4 lanes), and i7-8th gen, 16gb ram, costs 2300 at JB hifi. The lower spec HD i7-8th is $1700 though.

The XPS 13 2in1 is also 360 degree thing, but i think it uses intel Y, not U.

So you reckon the Surface book is better because it detaches? Kinda big compromise to go down with 6th gen cpu though…

Maybe it's worth it if you are after a 4k display notebook/tablet…

        • @boohooimissout: the detach is useful. It’s becomes like an iPad. So if you use an iPad a lot then this would be worth it.

      • This has a much much better GPU than the Intel integrated graphics in those.

    • I have a X1 Carbon. AMA.
The keyboard on the Carbon is top notch.

  • The question is really whether this is worth it considering the base Surface Book 2 isn't 'too much' more…

    • +1

Almost twice more at JB I think

  • +1

When is the pupil code expire?

    • Today probably 11.59pm

  • reminder this is 6th gen cpu, 8th gen is out yet.

  • I bought one, they use dhl. Quite the pain sorting out delivery.

    • +1

What was the issue with the delivery process? Im keen to buy this, but flying to America on feb 7th so wondering if it will arrive before then.

      • +2

Ordered one of these a couple of months ago - delivery was super quick and it actually arrived the next day for me!

        • Thats what i thought would happen considering its delivered by DHL.Fingers crossed delivery is quick for me also.

        • +1

          @BlitzR:

I ordered last Tuesday for delivery on Thursday so you should be right if you're there for pick up.
Since my order got to the Syd distribution (from Melb) on Thursday just after noon one of the subbie couriers got it and attempted delivery. Got a message at 6 saying he had a package, tried calling and he didn't pick up.

Redirected for delivery today to work but they tried delivery to my home yet again… so fingers crossed I get it tomorrow after a week.

        • @phil1311:
I'm in Sydney all this week, so I had it delivered to my parents house. once I get a tracking number, I might call dhl to authorise that my parents sign forgot.

          Thanks for the reply mate

        • +1

          @BlitzR:

They'll send a text with a link. There are alternate options for delivery and drop off. DHL told me they couldn't leave the package at the parcel pickups because of the weight - package is just over 3kg and the pickup limit is around 2.5kg.

I’ve got one of these, it’s a great computer and cost double this only a year ago. Graphics are just about as fast as the Surface Book 2, just has a dual core instead of a quad core chip. This one should also come with the pen, which the new one doesn’t.

    • Wow. They've cheaped out on the new one? I had to buy my pen separately for my previous Surface Pro, so I was glad to see it included here. Essentially shaved an extra $100 off the price for me, as I see the pen as essential to my use case.

      • Are you saying, the 965M graphics are about as fast as a mobile 1050GTX? That seems unlikely (I could be wrong).

SB2 also has 8th gen intel CPU's, so, proper quad core CPU's (these are dual core CPU's) and no fan in the top bit (so no more fan whirring - I hope this doesnt cause thermal issues haha).

The no pen thing is very dissapointing though.

        • I think that you meant to reply to the person above me.

From those specs, the SB2 seems much more powerful than the first gen. I'd hope so, given that the first gen came out two years ago.

As for 965M vs GTX 1050, I found two benchmarks. I'm not sure which version of the 1050 the SB2 uses.

  • Non-performance base is also reasonably priced

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Microsoft-Surface-Book-256GB-Int…

    • The coupon code can't be applied to that one, so you'd actually by paying $100 more than for performance base.

  • Tried it previously and not light

  • +1

What about Spectre and meltdown? Any clue when Intel will come up with new processors?

  • Very tempting at this price since i finally cracked my Surface Pro 3 screen, however I will wait for the Mk2 or a Pro that has USB-C Charging.
