can you switch the OS to english?

    • +1

Yes but only doing a fresh install of Windows

    • I did this this week. lots of google translate required but once windows 10 usb booted youre away.

    • I've always wondered, does the dism method work?

When you add language packs using DISM, the licensing requirements of how many language packs are allowed to run on the Windows edition are not verified. If you add multiple language packs, all non-default, non-user selected languages will be removed from the computer after a period of time.

So if it allows you to add an English language pack then remove the Chinese one, that might work?

    This vs Lenovo E480?

    • +4

The e480 is 14 inch, and has thicker bezel with local warranty, last time at 1150 for i7.

This one is 15.6 inch, slightly heavier, thin bezel, with virtually no warranty.

    • +2

Why not consider this for $800?
There is extra 2.5 inch slot.

  • Is this 7th or 8th gen?

    • +4

      8th gen CPU

    • -6

      just wow.

      • ?

        • +1

i5-8250u, the 8 is the generation of processor

        • +18

@joungs: Thanks, that's really not obvious to someone who buys a laptop every 5 years.

        • +6

@footyboy: With the Intel Core i series the 1st number of the processor is the generation number. So i5-8XXX is an 8th gen, i3-7XXX is a 7th gen etc. The only one that was different was the 1st gen that only had 3 numbers in the processor model number. (i7-XXX)

        • +1

@Screamingeagle: That's really good to know. I'll have to remember this!

  • +4

Dammit… if this thing had Thunderbolt I would be ALL over it… fingers crossed they do a refresh with it!

    • Hoping for the same. With eGPUs taking off it would be nice to have it as an option.

  • +3

Surprised just how decent the MX150 is to the intergrated graphics, about 50% to 300% faster depending on the task.

    • +1

It’s a big upgrade from the 930/940MX’s that would’ve been used before the MX150’s release, definitely a potent card.

  • Personaly would wait for the [Xiaomi Air’s] (https://m.geekbuying.com/item/Xiaomi-Mi-Notebook-Air-i5-8250…) price to drop to the $900s because of the portability. Only difference, I think there is between the air and pro is size/weight, cooling, extra USB-C port. < correct me if I’m wrong ?

    • +1

What about the MX150 GPU? does the Air version have a dedicated GPU ?

    • +5

The air only has a 39.2Whr battery vs 60Whr for the pro, even with the larger screen the pro has a lot better battery life.

The air is also slightly louder and will throttle quicker due to the smaller cooling solution.

I retired my 2015 MBA for the Pro and not too concerned about the extra 650g weight and slightly bigger size.

      • Facts👍

      • typing on one now - great screen size/ratio. keys are better black too

  • +5

I would buy this but Xiaomi's warranty and support is really poor apparently if something goes wrong with it

    • How poor exactly do you know?

        • +1

When spending $1000 on a product and not having decent warranty or customer support from the manufacturer is a major buzzkill for me personally

  • Is shipping free or requires extra?

    • +1

Just noticed this, shipping is $25.94USD bringing it over $1K AUD. My apologies everyone.

      • Does that mean you have to pay tax?

        • See this discussion: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2077766

Should be able to dodge it as its the value of the goods that determine the threshold.

        • +1

I wasn't required to pay to get mine

        • @Salmando: How much was the value of your order without shipping? Which deal post did you buy on?

        • +1

          @sky blu:
Without it was $932.35. double checked and with shipping it only came to $1018.12.

          Can't remember the deal sorry.

  • +1

Err this was US $760 or so from Gearbest and Lightinthebox few weeks ago.

  • Unfortunately the display use pwm, so it may flicker.

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Xiaomi-Mi-Notebook-Pro-i5-Lapt…

    • Is this all models or just this ?

      • It looks like this model on the deal.

  • Wasn't this way cheaper before?

    • I thought that was a price error?

      • I think most people got their orders cancelled but a few got delivered.

  • Looks good in black. Wish I needed a new MacBook.

I import a lot of things.

    For reference:

The value of the product is the sum of: the customs value of the goods any customs duty payable the amount paid or payable to transport the goods to the port or airport of final destination in Australia (or the place in Australia to which goods are posted) the insurance cost for that transport, and or any wine equalisation tax payable.

You are required to pay GST on this one, sorry folks.

    • +4

I got mine here no problem. Shipping made it $1066 or something, but no gst paid. The price on the package didn't show transport cost - just the unit price in usd.

      Edit: was from Lightinthebox

  • Got this laptop from Gearbest last month. Great powerful machine.

    • Odered in September I guess?

      • Got one last December. Spoke to the Gearbest rep here in OzBargain to get around with the GST.

        • What was the shipping time like? Thanks.

        • @KaitoKid1412: got it 2 days with DHL Express shipping option. It's a little extra on the top but at least you know where it is.

  • +5

I'm a massive Xiaomi fanboy but… I don't think I'll be making an expensive purchase from certain sellers again.

I have the first gen Air 13.3 from last year and it's developed a common issue on the screen where there's a weird discoloration (white'ish fading) that outlines the whole screen.
I have a choice of sending the item back for repair at my cost, or spending about $140 to buy a screen replacement from Aliexpress.

I didn't buy from Geekbuying so they may be better - but I bought from Gearbest who seem to only cover a money-back warranty within 45 days of purchase.

I'm not sure how Geekbuying are for warranty, but it's probably worth keeping in mind that you will be out of pocket, or out of a laptop for a prolonged period of time (and out the cost of shipping) in the event something goes wrong.

None of this is entirely surprising, but still worth keeping in mind if people are on the fence.

    • So what did you end up doing?

      • Literally just happened in the last few days so not made a decision yet.
I think I'm going to sus out buying a screen and replacing it myself, then selling the laptop.

Shipping it will probably cost in or around $50-$100 and take 2-4 weeks to get there and 2-4 weeks to get back, not including the time Gearbest faf about with it.

Seems more trouble than it's worth…. which I think is their whole gameplan as they don't really want you to be sending things back to them… they'd much prefer you not bother, obviously.

This was the same situation from a couple months back, when I notified them that my fan was quite noisey as well… another very common defect that crops up in the 1st gen laptops after a period of time.
The fix here was to open it up and use some sort of lubricant on the fans (not WD40, but something like sewing machine oil).

Shame really - it's put a bit of a dampener on the laptop which, up until now, I absolutely loved.

        • +1

I've tried replacing a laptop screen once. I broke the bezel. :(

If you know someone going to a country where Xiaomi have a brick and mortar store, they might be able to help you out.

        • @flaminglemon: Haha, yeah it could get interesting!
I used to work for an Apple repair shop doing laptops so hopefully I'll be alright.

Apparently, there is some trickery to it as the screen is glued to the glass front or something.

        • If you find out where the get a replacement screen , please let me know

my 12.5 air screen is busted and i'm happy to replace it but yeah

        • +1

          @ndftz: http://www.lcdoled.com/125-1920x1080-lcd-screenfront-glass-a…

This "LCDOLED" brand seem to be sold on Amazon as well - I think from all different resellers though.

No idea if that site I linked is legit or not though…. but that item might be the one for your laptop.

Major issue with these generic replacements is that they don't have the "Mi" part written on the front.

        • +1

          @Deviner:

          Legend!

kinda nice to not have the Mi IMO, especially since the back is unbranded too.

This actually got me searching and I found and ordered :

          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/12-5-inch-For-Xiaomi-Air-Not…

slightly cheaper, probably the same thing.

          here's to a working machine in 40 days ;-)

        • @ndftz: Nice one! I was looking at the 13.3 one on Aliexpress as well.
Whimped out after adding to cart though…. ! I'll probably grab it later today tho .. :)

        • +1

          @Deviner:

if you wait 2 months and PM me I can let you know how the repair went haha

          good luck mate

        • @ndftz: Hahaha you too mate!

        • +1

          @Deviner:

got the screen, surprise it has a MI on it

works great. not sure it doesnt seem as vivid as the original but it works a treat.
taking the hinge off and the glue was a PITA but dont be afraid to apply force to the top of the screen as you separate it, its just the glue being firm

        • @ndftz: No way! That's great news! Thanks for letting me know. I think I'll go for it if that's the case. Happy days! :)

  • Any duties payable on this?
Curious to know if anyone has any experience importing something like this.

  • This or Dell XPS 15 9560?

    • +2

      Dell for sure.

    • Can't really compare them tbh lol

      This is $1000

      Dell is like $2400+

      Totally different price ranges

      • At the moment you can buy Dell XPS 15 for 1800 and XPS 13 for 1400.

        • At the moment you can buy Dell XPS 15 for 1800 and XPS 13 for 1400.

Do you have a link for Dell XPS13 at this price?

        • @check:

Since they didn't answer, I had a look and found a refurb:

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-XPS-13-8th-Gen-Intel-Core-i…

Use the 10% off code AWESOME and it comes too $1439.10

        • +1

          @FabMan:
          Thanks for finding this!

I was hoping he knew of a good deal for a new one…

      • I reckon if you're not in a rush to buy, wait for the Dell XPS 15 to go on sale, i saw it during Christmas time go down to $1800!
I bought mine for around $2200, i smacked myself silly when i saw it go down that low.

    • +1

      Of course Dell

  • I'd buy it for $800 without warranty but electronics have such high failure rates wouldn't go higher than that for potential waste of money.

  • As appealing as it is (I'm a sucker for Xiaomi products too), the lack of any real warranty is a big and potentially expensive drawback. I've had my share of expensive electronics fail on me, so warranty is a must.

  • +1

Amazing specs for the price…but if you run into problems….

I bought a jumper ezbookpro through a geekbuying sale. Great value, probably half the price of a similar local machine.

It had intermittent (but frequent) keyboard issues from day 1 , and it took 10 days for customer help to even get back to me.
Then the return process looked so slow and convoluted and questionable that at best Id be without the laptop for several weeks , maybe months.

So I pulled the laptop apart and tried to fix it myself. (which has made it better but it still has occasional problems).

These Chinese electronics can be a bargain.
But with almost no warranty coverage and questionable longevity/quality control , they are definitely a gamble.

I think the safest bet for most people is a brand name on sale.

The Lenovo Flex 5 14-Inch 2-in-1 Laptop posted by boohooimissout for $600US is a bargain for a 2-in-1 , and I would grab it. But all reviews say it has high screen reflection and low screen brightness, making it almost unusable in bright environments. So I'll have to keep looking. :(

  • Out of stock?

  • Crazy specs. Not comfortable about the warranty/off shore customer service.
