If only I live in a place where pets are allowed… Would love to raise a kitten.

Depending on your state landlords can't reasonably disallow you from having a pet. New laws coming in 2018 for Victoria: http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2017-10-08/victorian-tenants-a…

      • +1

The new laws might be coming in but they're not here yet, I just had a rental application rejected because I have a cat and there are tonnes of places advertised as "no pets".

        • better than the ones - "pets considered by negotiation", turns out to be no inside pets, no dogs (even if outside only) i think they would allow a fish tank (had limits on size - not to be in carpeted area) or bird cage outside.

      • not sure why landlords can't unreasonably disallow pets… it's their property isn't it

australia is becoming more like the soviet union every day, so much for owning property, can someone pass the communal soap please

Unfortunately lots of pets are given as Christmas presents, only too be abandoned soon afterwards. Or people are about to go on holiday, and realise that cat boarding costs around $20 per day and spaces are quite limited in summer.

    Very sad.

  • How can you search by breed? I’m looking for a British short hair thanks

    • To search by breed I just typed in the search bar, worked for other breeds, unfortunately doesn't look like any British short hair cats are available at the moment

      • I see that’s too bad

No. We need pet owners to stop letting them outside. My car has killed more wild life than my cats. Car - 2 birds. Cats - 0. Cats inside only!

how about you euthanize the humans who chop down entire forests, killing and de-homing thousands upon thousands of birds and animals? you should do yourself while your at it as once upon a time the property you are sitting in right now was most likely an animal or insect of some sorts home.

    • +1. Cats are evil. They don't give a crap about people either - if a household cat was 10 times bigger, it would view us as nothing more than food. If a dog was 10 times bigger, it'd just be a big dog.

      • +2

If a dog was 10 times bigger, we wouldn't need a shower again. That's a big tongue!!

Cats are vicious and destructive to birds and wildlife. I don’t know why anyone would dispute that. Humans are bad too.

        • They're helpful at getting rid of rodents though (and as I said, if cats were much larger (lion size), they would view humans as rodents too).

  • I am unfortunately allergic to cats :(

    • +2

Get a Devon Rex. My sister's husband is allergic and they have two Devon Rexes. A little weird-looking to start with but you soon get used to them.

      • +5

It is true. I am a husband and my wife says I'm a little weird-looking.

    • Me too but I think that's only a good thing.

  • every time there is a special like that it is in Victoria NSW must be a real stingy scrooge

    • +2

probably if you can't afford to adopt the pet you can't afford to take care of it

  • "Snakes with fur". Good ol Paulie Walnuts.

    Free cats! Wow that's a horrible idea…
Good intentions, but if people aren't paying for their pets I'm not sure if they will actually realise the attention they need.

Going to be upfront right now given this is a bargain website and people will go to extreme lengths to save money (looking at you, person who bought a laptop and asked if they could resell the windows 10 license).

Cats aren't cheap. You can't cheap out on a lot of things. Sure you can buy bulk food and kitty litter but vet visits are NOT cheap.

Desexing your cat and you legally have to do that will cost around $250

Council reg is about $50 a year

    General Vet check/yearly jabs $150

Wormer tablets are about $100 /6 months

Then you have food and kitty litter

    Toys

    Scratching post

Climbing tree to stop him or her climbing the curtains

If you can't afford it. Please don't do it. That being said having a cat is much easier than a dog and they are awesome.

    • Aside from the financial cost and the fur length, what other factors need to be taken into consideration when adopting a cat?

I was looking at the link and seen a few that I like but can't decide haha…

I know from a friend who had a ragdoll which suffered from a weak heart disease commonly found on ragdolls.

With dogs, usually you get different size and extreme difference in personalities from breed to breed… But not sure with cats.

    • Pretty sure youll find the fee charged at the RSPCA/Lort Smith (if still around) etc, includes snipping out the bits. Most of these organisations desex as a matter of policy. It and other medical checks etc are the reason for the expensive fee.

Scratching post and tree can be the same. And they lived fine forever without them.
Toys? Really, you think it cares if its a milk bottle lid/bit of ribbon, or a designer pretend mouse? We have a stray that made our place home, my partner is a sook and fed it and now it loves us, and it doent really play with toys much at all.

      • There also a lot of vets that will desex only for $100.

  • already have a stray or feral cat living under my computer room… i don't mind throwing it some food every now and then as long as it's a male… knowing my luck there will be a litter any day now

    • You should be hoping its a female, you can sell the litter of cats then ;)
