Amazon has a big sale on Windows Mixed reality headsets - Microsoft's take on VR goggles.

All include motion controllers, and should just work with the most recent update to Windows 10. I'm not too sure about PC requirements, which is why I'll probably hold off on this deal for now.

For comparision, the Lenovo bundle is AUD$799 at Harvey Norman.

Good prices, though people (including myself) reguarly sell these cheap after being a freebie.

    • What was your experience?

Also what kind of product are you buying regularly that you score these as a freebie? Asking for a friend ;)

      • Sure it was with the laptop sale where you got one free after buying a gaming laptop from jb or hn

        • Yeah it was, I got one for free, as have countless other people.

    • Just looked on gumtree lol - the asking prices are nuts with zero warranty. This Amazon deal is way better (you at least get some DOA protection).

      • Mine sold 350-400 on ebay, that's the norm.

  • I tried to install these on a VR ready gaming laptop and had numerous issues trying to get it installed. Gave up after several hours of frustration. My PC was fully updated with the latest windows 10 patches.

  • I got one of these for free with my Lenovo Yoga 920 from JBHIFI. Fantastic devices that solve a lot of the hassle that comes with other VR solutions. You can find a ton of them on gumtree at the moment cos a lot of people trying to resell the freebie so check there, but if you're in the market can highly recommend. FYI The specs on your computer do matter. A standard modern laptop will be able to get the native windows mixed reality apps running, but anything with more graphical movement or complex 3d environments will need a graphics card - the more powerful the better. Also good internet helps ((profanity) turnbull) because if you're streaming 3d/vr videos it can be pretty bandwidth demanding.

  • Fyi the Acer headset comes with a free Ghostbusters game which is pretty cool (albeit short). This game will work on a pretty low end machine too (read integrated graphics card)

  • I bought the Dell set off Gumtree for $300. Gotta say so far I'm impressed. Tracking, positioning, movements etc are all very smooth. Haven't tried much with it yet. Tried both Windows and the Steam VR lobby. Steam lobby has more interactive stuff. For $300 it's a great bargain. I mean next cheapest is the PS VR which I've also tried. The resolution is very low in comparison and you're kinda limited on what you can do on a PS4 anyway. Next VR solution on PC is double the price. So unless you're ready to shell out for an Rift or Vive, this is next best thing.

I did the same thing after the Lenovo offer. Steam VR is a bit wonky but hopefully the drivers will improve. Overall I am happy with the purchase.

If anyone picks one of these up, order a cheap bluetooth 4.0 adapter (if you do not already have one), as it is required for the controllers and is not included.

      • Oh yeh good tip on the BT Adapter. I had to go out and get one too. Surprised it's not included. Steam VR sometimes is very smooth sometimes needs to close some windows. But yeh I agree it's a bit wonky. It's still in BETA anyway. So there's hope.

  • what games or app can you use with it?

This. Haven't seen anything compelling to make me get one (much as I would like to).

    • I believe that steam vr works with them.

VR Porn is the main reason people buy a VR headset these days.

    • Windows 10 now has native VR support with the latest update.
You can use ANY app in VR including things like chrome, word, outlook, Netflix, YouTube, etc.

Coolest free app for a really immersive VR experience is the Microsoft Holo tour. It's a virtual travel app. Really started to freak me out after awhile ago I had to take a break as it was surreal.

Also plenty of free VR videos to watch too.

For gaming there's heaps in the steam VR store.

Try the Ghostbusters now hiring game for a little fun. Surprisingly it ran on my laptop with integrated Intel graphics without any problems.

    • Pretty much most games on Steam (VR)
It's fully compatible with Oculus rift games from the oculus store using Re-Vive

It'll pretty much run any game that the other VR headsets do minus a few

  • Warranty?

    • Thanks. I've just cancelled my order. Even my planned PC upgrade is not up to par apparently (Nvidia 1050 Ti) so I'm not going to waste my money.

Your graphics card is better than my integrated Intel uhd620… You'll have no problems running a lot of VR stuff given I can run stuff on my laptop.

E.g. Ghostbusters runs flawlessly on my machine which only has an i5, 8gb ram, onboard graphics.

  • Has anyone ordered one and had it delivered?
I ordered one and I-parcel said that there were non- Permissible items in it and it's getting returned to amazon.

    • That's really strange. I can't imagine why that would be.

My order was cancelled by Amazon this morning - "Due to a lack of availability, we will not be able to obtain the following item(s) from your order". Having said that, I took my time ordering and it was on back order.

However, it's still sitting on Amazon, and showing as available to Australia, but now at USD$301 delivered.

      • According to the courier it has Lithium batteries:/ which from my understanding it doesn't. oh well I might try and order it again lol
