dont buy this one
buy the one off ebay w/ 20% off
same price but you get 120Gb ssd and a pentium n3710 quadcore
this one has:
Intel® Celeron® Processor N3060 (2M Cache, up to 2.48 GHz)
32GB eMMC Storage
which obviously a lot worse than the dell ebay offer
Your link disappeared. What happened???
id buy an ssd and put it in this machine, would make it significantly faster.
Except you'll have to replace the whole motherboard in the process. It's all soldered on.
What is the best laptop under $500? It is for my parents who would be using it for emails, studies, skype, etc so no gaming or video editing so dont need anything too fancy but more value for money.
Thanks in advance
junk deal.
Yep. Celeron was crap when it first came on the market and it is exponentially crap in 2018.
Celeron 300a would OC to 450 stable on stock cooling. So, there was that one..
You're old.
Is it faster than Z8350?
Atoms (Z8350) aren't really that comparable. Atoms are made for "mobile computing". Celerons have a higher clock speed.
@pennypincher98: Actually, the Z8350 beats it quite handily for most tasks. The Celeorn N3060 is pretty damn weak, and only a dual core.
@stephendt: Comparison. Also I said higher clock speed. Let's break it down to this.
N3060 is better at Single Core tasks.
Z8350 is better at Multi Core tasks.
@pennypincher98: Yep, and considering that most day-to-day tasks require multi-threading (eg. web browsing), the Z8350 comes out on top. It's around 20% quicker in this regard.

Is it a TN screen?
And isn't the 32GB eMMC slow and not good enough? Can you put your own SSD in?
Can you put your own SSD in?
Unlikely. All these cheap computers, everything is soldered to the motherboard. My advice is to have an external hard drive and store everything you can on that. Its not that slow (some HDDs are slower) but you would be right in saying its not good enough. You get what you pay for.
I can answer this by saying no - you can't upgrade this model, at all. Other people have mentioned the better version of this model that's sold for $319 during the 20% off eBay sales from the dell store. That one has a quad core N3710 CPU, 4Gb ram (expandable to a single 8Gb stick) and a 128Gb SSD - fully replaceable too.
Why anyone would spend $299 on this non upgradable one when you can spend $20 more for a much faster and upgradable one (CPU can't be upgraded though) is beyond me!
If you purchased the above mentioned, then No.
If you purchased from the following link, then Yes.
There are actually 2 different configuration for this model (model: 3162).
If you purchase those with eMMC, then the hard drive and the RAM are not upgradable as they are soldered.
If you purchase those with a HDD/SDD, then the hard drive and the RAM can be upgraded as they are not soldered.
Does anyone have one of these? I am looking for something similar but have trouble with very shiny screens (which seem to be the norm nowdays) - is the screen very shiny?
comes with "Anti-Glare LED-Backlit Display", not shiny at all.
Fantastic, thank you!
Good find but this particular model is $239.20 Delivered @ Dell eBay with PRAWNS.
