WD Green 120GB SSD $59 Pickup (VIC) or + Post @ Centrecom

120

Was looking for a couple of cheap SSD's to speed up some old laptops and missed out on the deal posted here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355632 before prices got jacked up. Stumbled across these. I picked up a couple for $59 a pop, but postage to metro Melbourne comes up as $7.63, might be higher for other states.

Next cheapest seems to be $69 at MSY or CPL.

Just FYI, other drives are literally 10x faster than these for random read/writes. It's a bloody great drive for caching video files for editing (ie big in sequence files), but not so good as a boot drive or to speed up game loading times (lots of small random files).

Still a deal, but not overly what you want if you want a super quick boot drive - spend the extra $30 and do the job properly.

    • +1

Looking at the specs, random reads are OK. (All ssds slow down with random reads)
It only gets real slow when you write, or worse when mixing read and write.
So still definitely not something you want for a general purpose PC drive. Thanks!

    • Very true, and the reason I wouldn't use one of these in my personal machine and stick to higher end models. But for speeding up some pretty old laptops on as small budget as possible, these were perfect and I'd rather save the $30. Still significantly slashed boot times and made them feel over all more snappy.

      • Still better off with something like Kingston IMO, they get down to around $65-70 and are 5x faster random 4K mixed.

        Edit:
SanDisk SSD Plus competes with these even, but I wouldn't really recommend though either ideally.

        • Just had another look

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/355632 this is cheaper and better benchmarks, probably would be best bet on a budget.

        • @dyl: thats the deal i originally missed unfortunately. Also looked at the a400 but no local stores with stock.

Edit: the UV400 is actually pretty comparable to the wd green and sandisk plus, the kingston a400 semms to have better benchmarks particularly in 4k.

  • For the technically hopeless I thought all ssd was the same speed.
Just looking for one for my laptop to speed it up

    • Samsung/Intel branding and you should be right.

    • The "green" gives you the clue….WD term for a drive with lower performance and thus less current drawn.

      • While this may be correct for their mechanical hard drives, all SSDs draw significantly less power than their traditional counterparts.

        • Thanks for your expert prognostication, however-

          https://www.wdc.com/about-wd/newsroom/press-room/2016-10-11-…

"WD Green SSDs deliver an ultra-low power-draw"

True or not I don't care but that is the "Green" ethos as I posted.

        • @havebeerbelywillsumo:

WD's Green range has never been known as a 'low performance' range, and you know it's just a marketing term, right?

        • @Lorindor:

No, it's a build spec, lower performance for less power draw eg, again from that WD sheet

Blue SSD 545MB/s and 525MB/s sequential read and write speeds

          Green SSD 540MB/s and 405MB/s

IMHO it is "low"(er) "performance" and the company is not shy about admitting that, as the ethos is low draw comes first with this colour class -"green" as in eco friendly was the cry at the kickoff. Note as I said above

"True or not I don't care but that is the "Green" ethos as I posted."

        • @havebeerbelywillsumo:

I read the numbers, and yes I agree it is a trade-off, but for most people the performance is very suitable.

        • @Lorindor:
My experience with anything from WD with the 'green' label suggests otherwise.

        • @0xFFFF:

Sure, if you're comparing different drives in real time you will notice a performance different, but not everyone wants or needs the best of everything.

      • WD Green means it's only good for storage. Not for use as the boot drive. But then you don't get much storage for 120GB.

        • Rubbish, Green means it's energy efficient, all SSDs are suitable as boot drives, regardless of their names.

        • Thanks for your expert prognostication hollykryten, however-

No, it means it wouldn't be optimal as a boot drive, better as storage, yes, but can still be used as a boot drive but with a performance hit.

Unlike an "archive" type drive for example which is really only for storage……there is a rumour that an unpowered SSD will "lose" data after a significant period but I don't know if that is a proven fact.

    • If you're upgrading from a non-ssd then this sdd will be plenty fast (the difference is night and day).

      • Yes I'm. Just trying to give my basic laptop. A lot more ooomph as it's a tad slow
Just trying to decide whether its better to buy another cheap. Entry level or upgrade hdd

It says 6gb/s but so do the other ones as well.
        I'd this the speed

        • The 6gb/s is the speed of the cable so it does not tell you ur speed of the drive. The SSD/HDD will have a different speed.

If you don't mind the small size, any SSD will be much better than a HDD. If you want to save money, $59 is ok for this. If you can spend $90 you can get a better SSD.

        • @incipient:

No. It's the speed of the SATA chipset. The cable has nothing to do with the speed. You could place a so called SATA2 data cable on a motherboard with a SATA3 chipset and get 6Gb/s through it on a SATA3 SSD. Of course it would want to be a very good SATA3 SSD like a Samsung 850 Pro to get near the proper full 6Gb/s.

        • @hollykryten:
The poor chap was getting confused between interface speed and drive speed. I figured I'd simplify the distinction between "cable" and "drive". While you're correct i wasn't sure if a technical answer would help them.
