  • do these work on a PC, if so why not ?

    • +1

      Hi P3aker,

It does not make mention of this on LG's website.

    • I have a Panasonic one that looks identical and you can

Plug and play no driver needed

      • +1

thats what i was hoping for.. but it sounds like this camera only works to its full potential when used together with the software on LG TV's

      • hehe, already linked :)

        • Saw your link after I posted (^^)

Does this still work or has Microsoft stopped support for all Skype on TVs?

Yeah, I saw that link but of that list:
Skype is no longer supported on the following:

        • Amazon Fire phone
        • Android 4.0.2 and lower
        • Blackberry OS
        • Note: Android powered Blackberry devices are not affected
        • iOS 7 and lower
        • Mac OS X 10.8 and lower
        • Skype landline phones, cordless DECT phones, and analog telephone adapters (ATA)
        • Note: Skype phones, and adapters may still be available to purchase through third party retailers, but are no longer supported
        • Skype mobile for Verizon
        • Skype on 3
        • Skype on Telkomsel
        • Skype on TV
        • Symbian OS
        • Windows 10 messaging and calling apps on Windows 10 version 1511 (OS Build 10586) and lower.
        • Note: Skype UWP app for Windows 10 version 1607 (Anniversary update) and above is not affected
        • Windows Phone 8.1 and lower
        • Windows RT

None is WebOS so can we assume it still works or not?

        • Yes, but you'd need the embedded version of skype on your TV already and im pretty sure that is no longer allowed to connect to skype services as its been discontinued by microsoft

correct me if im wrong, not 100% on that one

        • +1

@P3aker: Fair enough, I will check when I get home tonight and post back, thanks for your help.

The software update on my LG TV has removed the Skype app completely. It's gone. I worked perfectly for us until they pulled the plug. My camera has been disconnected and removed from the TV now, it is useless now.

        • @jd: can confirm the Skype that used to exist is no longer there and no sign of it on the store either.

Negged the deal as it is useless.

        • @OpayuOnam: That is correct, LG notified me months before they removed it. i have tried to google to find a way to bring it back but could not find anything. i gave up on it and stopped using Skype since, we use Viber instead now on laptops, iPhones, iPads… It's gone from the LG app store. I still can use it for the hand-gesture remote control for the TV but it does not work that well comparing to the magic remote control and the LG app my smartphones. I paid quite a lot for it from HN.

        • @jd: I am so glad I did not buy it when I bought the TV, they wanted something around $90 then, I would have been super disappointed to see the webcam go useless, I have heard the gesture and the audio doesn't work well at all.

        • @OpayuOnam: me too, on Panasonic though. While I am at it the Panasonic app store is shite, sbs, abc and Netflix rounds out the useful apps

        • @Jackson: what shits me is that the webcam was really a money grab since there was no technical reason not to support standard USB cam protocol, they created these Skype cameras and charged through the roof, in the end they left you with a useless piece of hardware sigh

        • +1

@OpayuOnam: mines built in, but Panasonic was charging 200 at one stage for add on cameras, highway robbery

  • So is there no point in buying this product? From what I can tell the intended usage no longer functions and can't easily connect to a PC without proper drivers.

  • ordered one for my Lg tv. Hope it works

    • from the above comments, it won't

    • super sorry, as confirmed by JD.. past firmware's updates for your TV has made skype discontinued.

    • We will wait to hear on your experiences first. Doesn't look like they are going to run out in a hurry.

Or if they do, it will only be temporary until they get returned :)

      • It a shame though, as it would have been nice to have some new LG TV tech.

I was reading where people were buying new LG TV's expecting to use Skype, and then finding this was not possible.

Off topic, found a new channel 9 app for LG today - may have already been available to Sydney user, but appears to have been rolled out Australia wide. Now for 7 and 10….

  • Skype on LG tv = no. At least for newer ones in the last couple of years running WebOS 2.0+

If you still happen to have the Skype app on your older tv, it looks like it may work, but the next LG update may stop that.

The only feature of the cam remaining would be to use it for gesture control. And it looks like voice control using the 2 mics is not possible.

    • Even if Skype is still installed (and I think it was forcefully removed ages ago from all major brands), it still won't work because of changes done by Skype. They properly killed it. Even my Logitech tv cam with built in Skype client is now a brick.

  • Available for purchase to NSW & ACT customers only.

    Y u do this?????

I'd buy a few of these for Linux dev work if you would ship to SA…

    • Do you happen to know, if it works on linux 'out of the box'? Does it use a uvc driver or there are some 'hacks' to get it going?

  • +1

Downvoted because you can't Skype on tv anymore. Believe me, I've tried. Pretty dodgy trying to sell them since they obviously know it's a brick based on price.

  • How about other than Skype functions? Like gesture control?

  • Why did Microsoft cease Skype on TVs? Grrr… >-(

  • I have one on my parents tv to use skype for overseas chats but doesn't work now

  • Negging due to uselessness of product

  • @homeclearance; The price on your website just gone up to $25 :( Would you mind to provide us with a code to bring it down to the offered originally $9?

I would be interested in getting a few as they seem like a very nice hardware that I could play with.

    Thanks a lot!

  • You practically get the camera for free taking postage into consideration
Anyway, I received the camera today and both the camera and microphone work on a mac
So theoretically it should work in linux as well, and possibly windows if you can find matching drivers
For all the people negging, you should have bought one
Thanks to the poster for this bargain and the quick postage
