  • Safety fence required?

    • Would say so for a fence last thing you want is a toddler drowning.

      • Yeah in NSW:
"Any pool – and that includes inflatable and portable pools – capable of being filled to a depth of 300mm of water must, by law, have a 4-sided fence around it."

If you have pets at home do you fence the water bowls.

    • All pools require Pool fencing

      • All pools require Pool fencing

Which is stupid. A pool is a body of water, a pond that has the same dangers does not need a fence, a canal also does not need to be fenced, a creek doesn't need to be fenced and the sea doesn't need to be fenced yet the majority of drownings occur in these areas.

Why does a pool on a canal need to be fenced?

In QLD the same family lost two children in seperate incidents when they walked past the fenced pool and drowned in a dam.

        • Tho given that, why didnt the owners fence the Dam, why does the government need to tell them to do it?

        • +1

@asa79: Are you serious, are you going to fence every body of water while you're at it? Maybe entire lakes? How about lacklustre parents start paying attention to what their kids are doing instead of passing the buck and blaming everyone else?

        • @asa79: Because animals have to drink from some of them and the cost would be enormous.

What about bathtubs? These are not fenced.

How about dog or cat water bowls? Children have drowned in those so why are fences not mandatory for all water bowls?

          http://www.news.com.au/national/toddler-drowns-in-freak-trag…

And in over 90% of children drowning the cause is lack of supervision. That's right over 90%! But we won't address that issue and make parents take responsibility for their actions.

        • +1

          @Maverick-au:

Bath tubs ain't filled 24/7 as for ponds ain't as big but then again a toddler in sydney drowned in a pond unfortunately.
Governments can only control so much and i am happy they are enforcing it but as you stated parents are just as much to blame but then again looking after kids isn't as easy as you think.

@stussy: Ponds you usually use mesh fencing to reduce the depth of the pond

@stussy: Ponds you usually use mesh fencing to reduce the depth of the pond

Rubbish, how many ponds use mesh fencing to reduce the depth? A few percent? Children can drown in five centimetres of water which includes displacement so a few centimetres in a dog bowl is enough.

        • @stussy:

Governments can only control so much and i am happy they are enforcing it

Queensland Government has made multiple changes to the fence laws and the last time made them retrospective so those owners who upgraded a few years earlier had to replace them again. The cost to the community is enormous and there is nothing to suggest that lives will be saved as the majority of children drown away from the swimming pool and nearly every child that drowned in a pool was under the supervision of an adult that wandered off.

In Queensland you have to have pool fences checked every time you rent out a house, when you sell and they plan to bring in checks for all pools every two years at a cost of $2-300 each time plus any repairs or alteration costs and additional visits etc. They can also make you install temporary fencing at a cost of thousands. You can't change pool inspectors either or you can be fined $5500.

Queensland replaced pool fence laws multiple times including making one change retrospective so pool fences that were fully compliant are no more and some can never be made compliant with the new laws. The cost to the community in QLD is in the hundreds of millions every year and for what reason? So politicians can be seen to be doing something?

Where does it stop? Do we have police outside every school to protect every child when crossing the road or getting into a car or do we make parents accept responsibility and get out of their car and walk to the gate to collect their child?

as you stated parents are just as much to blame but then again looking after kids isn't as easy as you think.

I didn't say it was easy but making everyone else pay because a parent wants to absolve themselves of responsibility isn't the right way either and I'm talking about the family who were responsible for these laws after allowing their child to drown through total lack of supervision but have blamed everyone else.

      • My backyard already has a fence around it so i'm set!

        • You need a fence between your house and pool as well

  • same in victoria…but BigW and bunnings don't tell you that
    https://www.kidsafevic.com.au/water-safety/pool-fence-safety…

    • same in victoria…but BigW and bunnings don't tell you that

Why would they? Is it their job to tell you that that the screwdriver you purchased shouldn't be used to open anything electrical or that painting your whole house is illegal in most states?

      • +2

painting your whole house is illegal in most states?

        Wait. What?

        • Wait. What?

It's illegal in most states to perform any work that exceeds the limit in your state for unlicensed work. For example until the end of 2009 it was $1100 in QLD but is now $3300 however it has been changed to allow homeowners to perform work up to $11,000 but there are time restrictions on this so if your painted your house and after that performed tiling you would exceed the $11,000 limit.

"The value of building work is the reasonable cost to a consumer of having the work carried out by a licensed contractor on the basis that materials, labour and GST are included, regardless of who supplies the materials. This can sometimes be referred to as the 'market value'."

          http://www.qbcc.qld.gov.au/when-you-need-licence/when-you-do…

Other states are lower. NSW only just increased the value from $1000 to $5000 and the limit for homeowners from $3000 to $10,000.

          http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/ftw/About_us/Legislation/C…?

Renovating a house remains illegal in most states for a householder because of these limits. In QLD for example you can't even replace a downpipe or aggpipe in the garden as this must be done by a licensed plumber.

The limits apply over a period of time so painting one month and putting some flooring down the next puts you over the limit. Some states the limit is annual.

        • @Maverick-au: Which is why you need to get a Owner-builder permit

        • @asa79:

Which is why you need to get a Owner-builder permit

So to paint your house and tile your floors it's ok to spend all the money on the permit, be effectively unable to sell the house for many years and all for what? To keep making Australia the most expensive place to live in the world?

        • @Maverick-au: Renovating your house for sale should have a Owner-Builder. There are so many dodgy reno jobs out there, and unsafe ones.

    • The Box tells you that

  • The idea of a pool fence around these temporary blow up pools had me looking for images of the same. https://i.pinimg.com/736x/72/df/83/72df83ba3005050db68303c04…
I am sure that everyone who buys one of these $39 pools will put in a sturdy regulation permitted pool fencing and pay the council to come and inspect it regularly too. It is about time that we had some pool fencing around the whole ocean to protect everyone, but especially assisting parents who do not keep an eye on their kids while they are at play.
Further on the point of council catching this heinous and reckless act of having a blow up pool without a high fence. Our neighbor here in Joondalup WA got a visit from a council officer for a shed they had erected (Now removed and fine paid), and was told that it was picked by the councils new drone camera tech they fly over rear gardens to check who has what in the Joondalup region. Keeping us all safe thankfully. (I have never seen any drones flying over my back yard, maybe that was a scare tactic)

    • Our council here in the western burbs of Melbourne have aerial surveys completed (plane flying over with camera) they then overlay new image on old to identify unapproved structures then they send a notice of inspection & come knocking……

Before I put in a real pool I had a portable pool (fenced) and they picked it up through the aerial survey.

The permit for my fibreglass pool was $1500. Bloody scam to be honest.

Just dig a "Dam" in your backyard and you wont need fencing

      • +1

Big W still selling those $39 dams?

        • If you keep some ornamental fresh water fish in this, does that then make it a fish pond? So it does not need a fence then right? Not sure about sharing the "fish pond" with the fish on that hot day when you decide to jump in the "fish pond" just for a cool off :-).

        • @Op54: as long as its not Piranhas in your fish pond

      • In QLD you can use water as a barrier, but only if it's deep and wide enough to drown a child.

    • +1

Nearmap.com.au its aerial image mapping done either on a monthly to quarterly basic, All governments subscribe to it to look for any new house extensions, Sheds, Pools/Spas etc

Wouldn't it just be easier to fence the kids in? Less area to cover and appropriate for every situation!

  • Nice find, thanks OP, I would hope to see them in clearance price around the $25 mark. I think that around the new year Kmart and BigW have sold them off dirt cheap previously, but $39 is better than the RRP of $49 for sure (Shame you can't get the 3mt pool cover cheaper too, that still scans at $18 at BigW (or $20 for the 3.5mt cover)

  • Just walked into Big W Doncaster. Their prices are different in store. Got the "it's the online store price" and wouldn't honour it.

    • Ouch big w Epping had a whole pallet with the price marked

    • I've had an "online" price honoured before, we just demanded to see the manager…. Checkout lady was quite rude to us and it pissed my missus off.

  • Be prepared to clean the filter daily. It's tiny and clogs quickly.

    • Weekly at most, they are small but good enough…

  • Bigw has the current promo “20% off pool toys, inflatables and body boards”. Ends 10th December. Excludes clearance and items currently on special

    • "Bigw has the current promo “20% off pool toys, inflatables and body boards”. Ends 10th December. "

      Did you mean 10th Jan?

      • Oops yep. I took a photo when I was there yesterday ( was looking for a pool). Didn’t post because it wasn’t a huge bargain in my eyes… and I didn’t buy. 4 days to change my mind

  • +1

Maybe council should tell the retailers to sell inflatable fencing?

Otherwise none of us can afford 2k fencing on less than 4 weeks use of pool. plain ridiculous

  • I rent & have three, tall block walls on the three sides & a wrought iron gate on the fourth side. The rear yard is tiny. Do I still need another fence??
