Or $269 + $5 Delivery from Ebay tomorrow via the GG Ebay store.

    • Fantastic! I'll update the post

    • You can also select Click and collect and save your $5! I picked mine up today and am about to set it up.

Anyone think it's worth the $60 for the Good Guys Concierge service on this unit? It gives coverage for a total of 3years.

Not sure of the failure rates of the retail units.

  • +2

$328 with a $50 gift card at Harvey Norman.

    • +6

Just so this doesn't get downvoted into oblivion - when it was posted the deal was for $299 + $8 delivery.

  • +1

I just talked myself out of buying one of these :/

    • +4

This the cheapest it has ever been. They are an amazing piece of equipment… and its Australian too!

      • They are an amazing piece of equipment

        Err … why ?

        • +1

Nothing comes close this this in Australia.

        • @guidedlight:

I have a humax already, have been tempted by fetch but maybe netflix is enough.

      • I’m actually keen on this. But not sure how this compares to Foxtel, Apple TV or Telstra TV.

        • +1

You can't record on Telstra TV

        • You can't record FTA TV on Apple TV either. Most of theses boxes are not DVRs and are for purchasing or streaming paid content (as well as personal content).

Fetch Mighty and other DVRs do allow recording of FTA TV.

  • Can you transfer the recordings onto an external device?, ie usb drive, external hard drive?

    • +1

I think officially you can't… but I believe some people have been able to do this via the DLNA support.
      Check out The Whirlpool Thread

    • +1

      No. Maybe but not easily.

    • +1
    • You can access it as a network share, and just copy things off it onto the PC, and onto a drive from there. I haven't tried watching on a third device, but have successfully watched recordings from this on my PC, even when not on the same network, so I don't think they're encrypted?

The link kirt listed above is what you want.

      • +1

Sad that this is possible but not easy, probably due to content restrictions (and this being "overlooked").

        • It's not actually all that hard from memory, but yes, an easier solution would be better!

      • yeah you want to be able to store the content on a nas and watch off 3 red party devices ….. currently do this via hdmi recording but a cleaner solution would be good ……

  • I have an unplugged Tivo sitting here I was going to get chipped until I found out the EPG is only 2-3 days so I put that on the back burner. Have been using the IQ3 as my FTA tuner/PVR but am getting interference on the FTA channels which I never got on the Tivo.

Tempted to get the Fetch Mighty for the longer and therefore usable EPG Guide data and hopefully better onboard tuner than the IQ3.

    • The TivoHD is great, but it's so old now. I have to admit that the tuner in the Fetch isn't quite at the quality level of the TiVo… but really it's a big step up in functionality over the Tivo… and its way faster too. I can't comment on the IQ3.

      • +7

Out of interest -What do you mean by faster?

I owned a TiVo and now a fetch. Also on paper the fetch has better specs, from a usability point of view it's not close to the TiVo. I could navigate through a show much faster on the TiVo for instance. The jumpback feature on the fetch is clumsy and only works on 32x, it was intuitive and instant on the TiVo. The TiVo responded well to the remote, the fetch is laggy and often requires multiple presses.

The fetch often freezes, and I have to turn the power off as the remote won't do anything. To get to your recordings is 5 button presses on the fetch, 2 on the TiVo which doesn't sound like much but do every day many times and it is.

You can tell I liked the TiVo. Fetch does have more tuners and good catch up, and looks better on paper, but I found what the TiVo did, it did better.

        • +2

Miss the 'first runs' only option from Tivo. Wish they would have used Tivo functinality as a base and improved on it.

        • +1

I completely agree with thegrinch. I bought the fetch mighty to replace Tivo. Tivo was better on the TV reception and recording/playing.

I live in a Sydney suburb with many tall buildings around. My fetch could not scan channel 7, 9 and 10. Only ABC and SBS channels are available. My Tivo can still show all channels. I am still using my Tivo to manually record 6:00pm news. When I use fetch to play its own recorded ABC/SBS news, the picture often freezes for a second or so while the audio continues.

Until I upgrade my antenna, I will continue to watch TV through Tivo and fetch is only good for catch up at my house.

    • Just do it, you wont look back, especially at this price. I haven't since I traded in.

  • Can someone please explain the difference between the new fetch box you get with Optus cable?

    • Optus one has access to Optus Sports. The standalone box has no access to Optus Sports.

      • Disappointed with this as well (Optus' fault I guess). We have paid for Optus Sports and my son watch on his phone or laptop on their own or when connected to the TV but it's not possible to watch from the Fetch Mighty - go figure. It just makes it harder for us customers.

        • I used my friends subscription till I ended up with mine. I am sure many optus customers don't watch PL

    • +9

It's basically the same thing. The differences are:

      • An Optus box is tied to your broadband/mobile account. When your account is terminated, so is your Fetch box (no longer works)
      • Optus provides access to the EPL (i.e. Optus Sport channels). This isn't available with the retail box.
      • You can't mix Optus and Retail boxes for multi-room support
      • With Optus boxes must go through Optus for any technical support.
      • Legally you never own the box, so it has zero resell value (and you could be penalised for not returning it to Optus)
      • Optus boxes get new firmware slightly later than Retail boxes

      I hope that helps

Edit: I'll add that Optus boxes have the benefit of a full replacement if anything goes wrong at any time. The retail boxes have a 12 month warranty.

      • My mate had an Optus Fetch service and when he moved house he was sent a new box with new login details as part of the relocation. The new login meant he lost alll of his movie purchases. So I suspect the same thing would happen if you move from a standalone Fetch service to an Optus Fetch service (or back the other way). Something to keep in mind.

        • There's no reason why they couldn't just have kept the existing fetch …

        • Lol have been thru 3 fetch tv boxes unfortunately when it goes everything goes why couldn't they just let us copy our things to our external. :(

      • Thanks, great summary.
I thought there might be hardware differences.

        Glad there is not

  • Damn tempting at this price. Does anyone know what the power consumption is for this? (Standby or normal usage)

    • +1

I'd say less than your PC. Maybe 25watts.

  • +2

Isn't Fetch one of the brands that were throwing lots of money at the anti piracy movement?

  • Got the Foxtel Now box but would be great to consolidate everything in to one box. Can you get the Foxtel Now app on this?

    • +5

No. Foxtel is a direct competitor to Fetch

  • Can anybody please advise whether the Amazon Prime Video app is available for this? Cheers.

    • +1

      No.

    • +1

Not at the moment. Fetch were hinting about this a while ago, but there has not been any announcements.

      • Thanks PinzVidz and guidedlight, appreciate it. No sale then. :\

  • +4

Please elaborate on the no ad skipping/backtracking

No skipping ads is a deal breaker

    Cheers

    • +7

Many PVR's have a skip 30-seconds ahead button (or similar). Fetch does not offer this.
It does support fast-forwarding (up to 32x).

There is backtracking support. What this means is, when you are actively fast-forwarding the advertising if you see the ads finish and the program start, there is often a reaction time involved. Fetch will intelligently work out when it thinks you what to start normal playback and jump back a few seconds to compensate.

      • Awesome. Thanks for the info.

      • i wish the FM didn't show you when it was backtracking (only on 32X fast forward). This often confuses regular users and I have found they start fast forwarding or rewinding in response :-( TiVo would just intelligently take into account your reaction time so one would usually end up where one wanted to be after fast forwarding.

    • +1

FYI anything with the 'Freeview' branding will not allow skipping ahead in 30-sec blocks, only high speed fast-forward. You can get around this of course by just using something like HDHomerun assuming you have a PVR client (HTPC, NVIDIA Shield, Kodi box) to use it with.

      • Thank goodness Plex DVR doesn’t have ‘Freeview’ branding, but still has access to the listings.

    • Fast forward with and without backtracking is quite poor on Fetch, in my opinion and at least compared to TiVo. On the TiVo we could very easily and quickly fast forward past ads. With the FM we can but often overshoot or undershoot. Disappointed.

  • No support for google home.

    • +1

It does have a little support.

I ask Google Home to play things on the TV and it opens Stan or Netflix on the Fetch box and plays the program on the TV.

  • Just bought one 3 days ago ffs..
    Good though

  • I'm not familiar with these. Can you record netflix?

    • +4

      No, definitely not.

      • I see. Thank you for the reply!

    • +2

      Why would you want to?

      • +1

        Titles expiring after a while

      • Yea titles expire after a while, if I find something I like it'd be awesome to store it digitally.

Not really a big deal though, I just write down the shows and movies I like in my phone and might buy them on google play someday if they leave netflix.

      • so you can take on mobile devices and not cut into your mobile data plan.
some netflix shows download to mobile devices via wifi but not all shows.

  • god damn I just bought the $319 one before Christmas. They never used to go on sale, looks like the doors are open on this one. Great easy to use PTV if you still watch FTA content

  • +1

I agree 100% with thegrinch comment and I really miss my TiVo.

  • +1

for this price, better to get the NVIDIA Shield with lots of other add-on supported. PVR, FTA and payTV now are dying breeds.

    • +1

While live sport remains on free to air and Pay TV they will still be alive and kicking

  • This is a great price for a great bit of equipment! I was happy with 300 at HN two months ago.

  • That burns having just bought it from JB at 319. If it is advertised at 299 in catalogue, can I (and should I bother) using the price guarantee feature from the credit card

    • Check the terms. Mine (ANZ) limited if price difference is within $30-$300

  • If i pay $6 a month for a package with ESPN for example, can I record those extra channels?

    • +1

Yes, you can record the streaming channels (eg. ESPN)

  • +6

I was a long time TiVo HD user and hopefully soon will be again. We got a Fetch Mighty when TiVo shut down. It has impressive statistics but I can't say I am happy or would recommend it for the following reasons:

    1. TV playback still stutters every now and then, which never happened to me ever on TiVo SD or HD. Given the upgrade in hardware in FM this is unbelievable.
    2. Menu system is obtuse with everything focussed on nudging you to pay for TV and Movies.
    3. Remote is ok but nothing like the TiVo remote for ease of use.
    4. There are apps for iOS and I believe Android but they are limited to playing back purchased movies and TV. No access to recorded content even at home.
    5. Maybe its possible but I don't believe one can set a recording via the Web interface to Fetch TV, at least I couldn't when I tried the other day and I am in IT.
    6. User interface is just not as clear and simple as TiVo user interface.
    7. No ad skipping but even fast forwarding across ads isn't as good as the TiVo (SD or HD).

Now TiVo HD is very old and only has a few tuners compared to the FM having many, which is great. FM box is small and unobtrusive but the software and functionality just seems a let down for next generation.

Some of these limitations may be due to content providers and I don't know how FM compares to other DVRs out there today. Personally, I think something in the Plex space may be better but I am not sure.

I guess I was hoping for much more. Great price but I am disappointed. One small plus may be the improved interaction between Fetch Mighty and Fetch Mini(s) in the rest of the house, e.g. record and playback from MIghty on Mini.

    • +1

I am a massive Tivo fan - at its peak we had 4 Tivo's in my house plus another 6 at my siblings/parents houses

Tivo was easy to use - 1 year old kids could use it, 80 year old grandparents could use it.

      The tivo remote was great.

Although I miss Tivo, and I agree Fetch isn't as easy to use nor has anywhere as good a remote, Fetch is an improvement in other areas.

Tivo has had it's day for mine - if only they had continued to bring in new models of Tivo and also i wish they hadnt used Harvey Norman as the primary distributor!

      • I agree @GreatWhiteHunter. I wasn't suggesting TiVo was the future in Aus. I am mostly just very disappointed that in the many years since TiVo came out, with the huge improvements with technology, with the changes in content availability, this is the best "improvement' on TiVo.

        • Have to agree with both GeatWhiteHunter and mrhatken. After being disappointed by DVRs like Humax and Beyonwiz, got the TiVo when the HD box released and have never looked back, till the recent unfortunate discontinuation of services. Have been a massive fan of it well aware for years that it was a dying service. Generations old tech, but it was still way ahead of its competitors in the simple things that it uses the do extremely well. Especially the intuitive backtracking (only TiVo owners feel the difference, when we have to rewind every time we fast forward), record by new shows only, and record by keyword, none of which still available in the Fetch or any other boxes yet after almost a decade!
In terms of other features, yes the Fetch Mighty is the best replacement for the TiVo for now, and really hope that with their regular software updates, they introduce the missing features soon…

      • I'm considering buying this is it worth it for ESPN? I really want to watch NBA etc again $6 a month seems quite reasonable for that.

        • I think they only show like 5 games a week. Might be better off getting a league pass for approx $90AUD via Mexico vpn

        • @so3n: Yes, they show a minimum of 5 games per week. But if they don't show your team what's the point in that? You do get access to Watch ESPN (which is an online version of ESPN) - it's an overflow channel and it also has a bit of on-demand material as well. There is an iOS app and it can also be accessed via a browser.

    • Of course you can remotely set programs. DL the app and it's super quick.

How's the IT business going for you? ;)

Happy Fetch user - once TiVo user. That said, I only watch minimal FTA. Mainly on steaming services, but don't miss the TiVo.

      • Thanks @Fookos and Merry Xmas to you.

I know you can set recordings via the apps and I meant to mention that but I don't believe one can set a recording via the web (Fetch TV site), even when "logged in." There is a TV Guide but no ability (AFAIK) to set a recording. Disappointing.

If you just use streaming services, why not just use the apps on a smart TV?

    • @mrhatken - I found the stuttering seems to happen when I'm uploading large files (OneDrive sync), when the Internet connection is very slow/congested, the menu seems to lag - which really makes little sense to me when just watching free to air.

  • +1

What codec do you need to allow vlc to watch the recorded files on the network? I've seen others doing it

    • Is this for recorded FTA TV or just purchased movies and TV? It would be great if it was the former…

    • +1

Recorded FTA shows are unencrypted TS files.

    • FTA TV is broadcast in the MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 codec. Most computers play these codecs without the need to install any special codecs. I would recommend using VLC Media Player if you don't have a media player installed.

      • On the ipad or phone to watch through vlc I mean

  • DLNA Media Sharing (works with Plex, etc)

Can this access recorded FTA TV or just purchased movies and TV?

  • +1

Ex Tivo owner, had Fetch Mighty for a while now, I like it. Probably the main feature missing for me is the ability to cast to the device.

Sidenote - only the other day I found you can do 5 min jumps on recordings by pressing left or right arrows.

  • Error “looks like this code isn’t ready yet”

    • +1

as it says in the post " From 26 Dec 10:00am"

  • +1

Great Boxes BUT I've had mainy failures over the last 2.5 years!. Fortunately ours have been part of a TV/Internet bundle with Optus so they have replaced the box with a brand new one each times they have failed. The latest replacement was upgraded to a Mighty which are excellent boxes, its only failed once ! So if you buy one outright make sure you have good warranty backup with it !. The last thing you want is for it to fail and have to wait for a new one for weeks or wait for a repair. Optus have replaced via courier generally within 24 hours which is excellent service.

  • +1

Just tried to purchase (after 10am). Before 10am there was an error saying something like "This code is not yet ready." After 10am error now says "This code can't be applied to your order."

    • Same here it doesn't seem to be included in the sale

      • It’s meant to be a site wide sale.

    • The code PUNCH doesn't work. I have tested it on different items, even featured on the ebay front page. It returns "This code can't be applied to your order."

    • Not working for me either… worst case, I'll just buy direct from TGG website and claim $30 store credit, almost as good.

      • Price matching with HN?

        • +1

TGG Boxing Day sale: 10% back as store credit if you C&C direct through TGG website
So works out same price, but store credit not as good as actual discount

    • The code is not working for me either. The website shows an error message that reads 'This code can't be applied to your order.'.
