Someone Left Anonymous Gift at My Door Step at 11:30 pm today....

…addressed to someone else. :|
So, around 20 mins back while I was enjoying my recently purchased copy of Dying Light in a dark room, trying to sneak around super aggressive zombies in the game's night scenario. I hear someone bang my crimsafe. My dogs started barking full volume and rushed to the front door. I get up and ask "who is there?" - No reply. I turn on all the lights, and go in to wear some pants. Yeah its summer, so I love to relax around my underpants..
Finally, went back, opened the door, and I see no one there, but a gift in front of my door step. Thought to myself, 'awww neighbors are being friendly and left me a cake and card I guess'… pick it up and its quite heavy. Hmm…doesn't feel like a cake, ok, got a card on top. Open the card, and it says something along the lines of 'Kate, (name changed) Merry Christmas and hope this helps you and your family - Anonymous'….and it's got bunch of 50s notes in a money clip. Rough estimate, a thousand bucks or so. :|

I kinda got worried so didn't even bother to count, put the card and the money back in…. thought of keeping it outside the door, then thought someone may steal it, so went and kept it in the garage. :|

I am planning to ask my two neighbors if their Mrs' name is Kate and hopefully I can unite the parcel to their rightful owner. :)

But yeah… was a bit weird and am still scared if the package has a bomb or something. :|

    • Yeah, there has been a bike chained to our local bus stop shelter in our sleepy little seaside village for a few days, complete with helmet. Have never ever seen one chained there before and almost feels like its a test.

Why is everyone assuming drug money or something sinister? It could actually be someone genuine doing the 'pay it forward' thing to someone that could be going through hard times.

    • 11.30pm delivery? Christmas Eve? Anonymous? Can’t even get right address? Seems far more likely to be dodgy.

      • +7

Xmas eve, 11:30pm, so close to midnight when santa supposedly drops off presents? The message reads 'hope it helps you and your family'. Yeah I would actually say it's perfect timing. Is everyone so cynical and paranoid?

Might not be missing some law but maybe some morals? OP probably wants to do the right thing and return it to the rightful owner

      • -3

I was not suggesting he not attempt to locate the person just that rightfully it is his to keep if he does not find or know who "Kate" is.

Not sure why folks are downvoting you, it's a serious question. Personally I wouldn't have been able to sleep even a night taking something that doesn't belong to me. :)

  • Didnt get enough karma on reddit?

    • +3

The Reddit post was made after the post here. Am a true ozbargainer first, redditor second, and somewhere at the end the whole list, a karma whore :)

  • You should've tired to find Kate before giving to the cops. You could've had an awesome Xmas moment like this…

By providing to the cops, if they don't find the owner, does the money get returned to you or do they keep it?

    • +19

They said they will try to find the rightful owner for 60 days. If they can't find her and the money comes to me, I've decided to go spend all the money to buy toys and pet food for an animal rescue centre :)

      • That's good to hear. Sounds like your heart's in the right place, for many it isn't an easy thing to do. Merry Christmas and best wishes for the new year! :)

        • Thank you and wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a wonderful and prosperous New Year ahead :)

          @shadowarrior:
So you gave it to the cops? Sensible move.

Should have given it to me. I am a well known nigerian scammer prince and have screwed helped many people

@BrodenIt: I only give money and my credit card details to Nigerian princes. Don't try to scam me, there is no place called Nugeria! :P

      • Thats a great decision just keep all the receipts just incase someone does come looking eventually so you have every base covered. the police report and what you did with the money.

Did they open the box, what is the story with that does that go to you too?

After playing dying light i'd be crapping myself thinking what was in it, if they give you that too open it there, just incase you need to return that to the police.

thank god it was Christmas and not Halloween

  • This sounds like beginning plot of new Nicholas Cage horror movie

    • +1

Aren't all his movie Horror stories or is that train wrecks?

  • +1

So I think we've all glossed over the set up to this story. Playing a scary video game at night and someone belts on your front door. Come on, tell the truth. When you said you went to get pants on, you meant went to get clean pants on, right?

    • +2

      Shhhh…. let it go unnoticed….. :|

  • I could be a kate

  • I just want to know what’s in the box

    • +1

there was a button in the box… if you pressed that button someone dies ~ but you get 20K….

It's not someone you know or someone that you knows knows…

Chuck the surname into white pages and your suburb to see if it comes up.

    • Dunno why you're getting down voted, this isn't a bad idea…

  • +1

Put a sign out the front: "No KATE living here and wi$h to return." Anyone that knocks has to explain (and give the correct amount) before they get it back.

Travelling around at night in Dying Light with virals roaming around is TERRIFYING!

I jump out of my skin if I hear my wife open the fridge while I'm playing it.

    • Finally somebody understands :|
Now add loud banging on your door and dogs shouting at full volume….. that was also my first night in DL. :|

      • Even worse if you've just started because you don't have any skills or weapons yet. If you're spotted, you're as good as dead.

  • Are they legit currency (real notes)? Seems very odd if it’s a genuine well-wisher (family/friend) to not ensure that the recipient physically accepts the money. I don’t know anybody who would leave that much cash out the front just with a card in the hopes that someone finds it.

As for anything nefarious yeah I’d be inclined to believe it’s the same situation; if you’re trying to pay someone you want to atleast make sure that they take the money in the event they they later say they never received it.

That’s just my thoughts. But hell, even if this is a OzB/nosleep thread, I’m intrigued.

  • You're not the only one getting mystery cash:

The following day any unpleasant odour from the box?
    Can't imagine after 60 days…

    • +1

Yeah, what if it is the severed head of his pregnant wife in the box…and he didn't even know she was with child!

      • what's worse, that would mean Kevin Spacey was the last person with your wife's head??!

  • So let us know if you take the money, Kate or the corrupt cops XD

  • Hi im kate(name changed) a nigerian prince i will send you 10000 american rupees through the paypal if you send me my package. Thanking you mr shadowarrior.

  • +1

Wow. Incompetence is so rife in the delivery industry now that even Santa ****s it up!

  • I think it all depends on what's in the box… :)

  • +1

    The box! THE BOX!

  • I know what you can expect…

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/351155

  • Goddamn it Kate! Stop moving around

  • Hopefully there wasnt a puppy in the box!!

  • Any updates OP?

We are approaching a month since you have the box to the cops

    • None, haven't heard back from the cops (haven't inquired with them either). However I went for a nice road trip, started driving from Gold Coast all the way to Warnambool and back stopping at Bateman's Bay on the first week of New Years. So there's that :)

  • Sounds like drug money contact crime stoppers `1800333000
