Someone Left Anonymous Gift at My Door Step at 11:30 pm today....

…addressed to someone else. :|
So, around 20 mins back while I was enjoying my recently purchased copy of Dying Light in a dark room, trying to sneak around super aggressive zombies in the game's night scenario. I hear someone bang my crimsafe. My dogs started barking full volume and rushed to the front door. I get up and ask "who is there?" - No reply. I turn on all the lights, and go in to wear some pants. Yeah its summer, so I love to relax around my underpants..
Finally, went back, opened the door, and I see no one there, but a gift in front of my door step. Thought to myself, 'awww neighbors are being friendly and left me a cake and card I guess'… pick it up and its quite heavy. Hmm…doesn't feel like a cake, ok, got a card on top. Open the card, and it says something along the lines of 'Kate, (name changed) Merry Christmas and hope this helps you and your family - Anonymous'….and it's got bunch of 50s notes in a money clip. Rough estimate, a thousand bucks or so. :|

I kinda got worried so didn't even bother to count, put the card and the money back in…. thought of keeping it outside the door, then thought someone may steal it, so went and kept it in the garage. :|

I am planning to ask my two neighbors if their Mrs' name is Kate and hopefully I can unite the parcel to their rightful owner. :)

But yeah… was a bit weird and am still scared if the package has a bomb or something. :|

    LoL??

    • +27

The whole thing with his username and profile pic is what got me.

    • +27

OP, my name is kate. Must have been mine. Returning parcel will guarantee long term friend ship with nigerian scammer prince!

      • +6

OP, legally change your name to Kate. It will cost less than $1,000.

  • +12

Sounds like a drug deal payment placed on the wrong doorstep lmao. If you do track down "Kate", ask them to hook you up with some sticky icky for returning their drug money.

    • +3

I'd gladly accept if they deal with the green stuff, non-mixed with random things :)

      • +2

Green sutff… mixed with random things?

Never encountered of heard of this. Is this a thing?

        • +5

          the devil's lettuce..

        • +1

@Stitchy: I guess it comes with dressing? I would hate to spend 50 cents for dressing!

  • +2

Wow, good call to keep it out the way, Is the place you're in a rental you may be able to track down the people through property manager, or real estate agent you bought it through if you have no luck with the neighbours.

Maybe leave a note where the parcel was just incase they come back to check.

I would take some pics of it just for you're own benefit should someone come looking for it, then you have a record of what was there including the amount just incase someone accuses you of not being honest.

Also it gives you an accurate account of what was there rather than relying on memory if you track them down and they say where is the rest, should nobody know "Kate"

If you get no joy hand it off to the police. if nobody can locate the people or whoever left it after a certain amount of time it becomes legally yours, they give it back.

Might pay to ask them there may be a law around when you need to report something like this by or they could say take a couple of weeks see if someone comes to claim it if not bring it in.

    It's all kinda creepy

    • +2

Nope we are the property owners, we built brand new and moved in 2.5 years back. We have rentals on both our side though. Good idea with the pictures, and yeah if I can't find Kate, was thinking of taking it to the cops. Don't even want to try open the box, its pretty heavy. I'll leave a note at the door now I guess. Thanks.

      • +35

Yeah leave it at the cops doorstep with a note

        • lol

      • Leave a note on the doorstep "if you dropped a package for Kate here mistakenly, please leave Kate's correct address and I'll (you) make sure she gets it"

they get to stay anonymous, kate gets the help she needs, and you get to help Kate too.

if in a few days no one has left a address for Kate, take it to the coppers and go back to collect your money in 6 months (or however long)

        • "collect your money in 6 months (or however long)"

          6 months later.

          Cops: "What money?".

        • +1

@Atazoth616: Yep. I had an iPad recovered by police that they kept for evidence when they took the accused to court. After it was all done I asked for my iPad back… Their response - "What iPad?"

        • +1

@D6C1: report them to the police

      • +1

Im guessing the box is full of gold bars

  • +1

May also be an idea if you have a trusted and reliable close friend or rellie, ring them, tell them exactly what happened and ask if they can hold an email from you until you tell them all solved/handed in to police, with details and those pics………….that way you have a separate and past dated version of what happened stored away from you.

    • +12

      Why?

    • +1

      Woah!

Why so serious for? Too many movies for you. Go to your room!!!

  • +11

Just take it down to the local cop shop.

    • +12

this is the best legal protection for you. if no one claims it you will get the loot!

    • +4

Am thinking the same instead of trying to door knock more. Plus its kinda awkward to ask, "Hey, is your Mrs' name Kate?" :|

      • +3

Theft by finding is a thing too.
So just take it to the cop shop.

        • Wait.. Really??
If I find $20/jewellery on the rd, that could be theft?

        • +2

@Peannut: when the bikes come looking for it after realising their error, then it didn't seem like the best idea

        • @Peannut: Not "could be", it IS theft.

No-one is going to care though obviously.

        • +2

          @Peannut:

Yes. 'Finders Keepers' is, in reality, theft.

Theft by finding is a genuine offence. For you to legitimately take ownership of an item it must be 'abandoned' rather than lost. This is where the police '6 month' rule works for the finer. For most items, if it hasn't been claimed for 6 months it becomes technically 'abandoned' and you can claim ownership.

Otherwise, you've just stolen it. But yes, probably not too relevantly for a small item, but keep in mind, somebody may love that small item of jewellery.

      • The anticipation of awkward moments rarely live up to the reality - not really worth stressing over or deciding not to take an action purely because it might be awkward.

      • Or you say “is there a Kate living here?”

      • Why would you feel awkward?? I dont get it.

    • And ask "is there an officer Kate that works here"

  • +8

it's from santa and kate was your name in past life

    • +10

Just in time for that LG OLED deal at Good Guys! :)

  • +2

Merry Christmas! Santa must be real, i hope he leaves me some cash.

  • +36

Hey it's me your neighbour, Kate

  • +20

Yeah its summer, so I love to relax around my underpants

Are you sure the gift is not from your neighbour, Kate?

She wants you to buy some clothes.

    • +4

Are you telling me its not normal to walk around in my underpants in this darn hot QLD summer? :| I haven't even taken nudie dips in my pool yet….

  • +8

You mis-read it.. it’s says “Mate” not Kate. Merry Christmas mate….

And yeah, take it to the police station. When the bikies turn up accusing you of stealing it and want it back, you can just say, did know what it was or who it’s from, if it’s yours, it’s at the local police station.

    • +6

Exactly, is it typed or handwritten OP? You know k and m are wuite close…

      • +5

        Lol @ wuite close… :D

I see what you did there…

      • +6

        Username also checks out

    • +4

Hand written, but remember, 'Kate' was name changed when I typed this post. It has a different unique name which isn't close to mate or my name.

  • +2

    Open the box!

If the card had a ton of money, surely the box has something equally as interesting

    • +4

Not gonna take the risk, how do I explain opening a box which clearly doesn't have my name on it…plus some things are better left unopened…. :|

      • curiosity would kill many ozbargainers :/

  • +7

it's got bunch of 50s notes in a money clip

Probably proceeds of crime and money laundering, do you bank with Commonwealth by any chance?

planning to ask my two neighbors if their Mrs' name is Kate

    That's not a good idea.

    • +1

      Nope not with CBA.

      • +14

You should be if you're getting shady packages of unexplained money.

  • +2

Sounds sus to me perhaps drug money. Contact crime stoppers they will advise you 1300333000

    • +4

Do not listen to him OP this poster is trying to trick you into handing him the cash and thus gave you a fake crime stoppers number.

The real number for crime stoppers is 0435678325.

They recommend that you convert the $50 notes into unmarked $20 and $10 notes before handing me them the cash.

  • +1

    Let us know what happens!

    • +2

I walked over, no one was home :| Will wait for them to come back home then take it to the cop shop this evening if that doesn't work out. No one read the note I left on my front door last night either.

  • +1

My friend found $20 grand in a bag in a phone box once.

    Wasn't even Christmas.

    • +23

      I don't remember reading that forum post….

    • +3

Are they an OzBargainer? That will pay for a hell of a lot of eneloops.

    • +1

It f'ing well was xmas ;-)

      All of them at once

    • +1

Sounds like a money drop for a ransom or blackmail XD

  • 'Kate, (name changed) Merry Christmas and hope this helps you and your family - Anonymous'

So they actually wrote "Anonymous" on the card ?

    • +2

      Yep :|

      • +5

May be the money is from Anonymous Hackers group https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_(group)

  • +4

So that's where I left my Centrelink money last night ahhh well enjoy the coke and domino's.

  • +2

If it's a unique have googling/Facebook searches may help, otherwise police station might be a good idea.

Although I'm really curious about the package. It's not going to be a bomb, you're not someone famous that the Mafia wants killed…

Let us know when you decide to open the package :)

    • +1

Yeah but maybe they wanted to kill Kate?

  • You're not curious enough to open it and then reseal it? :P
From the note it sounds like "Kate" is struggling.

    • Yeah, from the looks of it…but who would gift hundreds/thousand bucks for free in this world and tag as anonymous? :| I am bit curious to find out what's in the box, but I won't be able to explain to the cops or the rightful owner why I opened the box :|

      • Curiosity. I once opened a floral package, and then broke the item (I dropped it). He left it on my desk because it was floral, but it was for his work. He then explained it to work that I broke a historical item due to curiosity. XD It was a pair of freaky as rusty handcuffs - being sent to the historical society.

        Someone from church/not immediate family?

        • +1

Curiosity kills the cat, in this case, a pair of rusty handcuff :P

Funny you say church…one of my neighbour is pretty 'churchy', if that is even a term…. hmmm :\ I will be inclined to accept Jesus as my lord savior and the all mighty if it entails free money being dropped at my doorstep :P

        • @shadowarrior: We already know how it's going to end, lured down a dark alley way or into a warehouse with the promise of food XD Those secret pop-up events.

        • @shadowarrior:
I have heard of Church people doing this on a few occasions, would be the most likely scenario to my mind. I know you have now taken it to the police station now but I would at least check with them to see if there is a "Kate" there, chances are if someone was giving it, it would make a really big difference, would be good Karma for you.

      • but who would gift hundreds/thousand bucks for free in this world and tag as anonymous

If you're particularly "rich" the last thing you want to do is provide indications as to your wealth as it generally causes relationships to change. Notwithstanding that, it could be from someone involved in crime who doesn't want to explain why they can gift that amount of money.

  • What if the box does have someth8ng that can cause harm. If u take it to the cops and it explodes or releases something then u may be under suspicion for terrorism with how things are going.

  • Ditch the box and spend the cash.

  • Hand it into the Cops and if no rightful owner is found then it's all yours

    example- http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content.asp?Document_ID=16903

  • +1

    Hi it's me Kate

  • Built new 2.5 yrs ago and I assume have been living there a long time and don't know the adjoining neighbors wives names?

Do you stay inside 24/7 gaming? as for writing up whats transpired emailing to a friend to provide evidence why bother you have it all here recorded just don't revise or delete :)

I'd be scared the Gold Coast Cops would use the money rather than keep it and hand back, they would find some excuse to keep it for next yrs Christmas do LOL They can't be trusted

    • +3

Rentals on both sides, can't be bothered trying to remember names of someone else's tenants. The name 'Hey mate,…' suffices for the limited interaction I need to have with said neighbours :)

QLD Police will add the money to their 'safety speed camera site' fund most likely :P

  • +3

Signing 'Anonymous' yet knocking on the crimsafe, it is very likely the deliverer watched you pick up the package.

    • +4

Agree, or even took a photo of you.

    • +1

Urgh. You had to add more scary spices, didn't you? :/

      • Dude get some cameras

  • +3

    Change your name to Kate?

  • +4

Have you checked the notes to make sure they look 100% legit and have all the anti counterfeit stuff on them? They might return in a few weeks expecting you to spend it (funny money), then hit you up for it in real cash.

  • +8

so you received "Something for Kate" ?

  • +12

And I took it to the cop shop. They seem quite bothered about having to do paper work. :)

    • ?? You didn't knock around the neighbours to see if they know a Kate?

      • +2

Nope, not my job to do that. And if I found two Kates, how would I confirm who the right one is? I don't think a pillow fight could be used in that case. :/

        • +1

That's a real shame. Sounds like this Kate really needed that gift this xmas. Even more so if she had kids.

    • Good on you. Did they give you a receipt? What was in the box? If you got a receipt it should be itemised.

      • Yep they gave me a receipt, just lists box wrapped in silver gift paper.

        • Seems weird they didn't open it to check. Good on you though for doing the right thing.

        • +1

@Peace Maker: They said since its an unknown box, they will wait for a specialist member or team member to examine the package, in case it contains drugs or any thing illegal etc. They were giving me weird looks for bringing in a random box inside the station..

        • +2

Sounds like someone kept the cash.

  • Wow crazy! Let us know how it goes. But yea I'd definitely chip in and say call the cops and let them know everything. See where they go with it.

    Thanks for the post!

It was probably Tracey Grimshaw getting next weeks major exclusive story ready for A Current Affair
