  • is this the one with nvidia graphics?

    • -5

No, this is not surface book 2.

      • +1

The original Surface Book also comes with an Nvidia 940m GPU option.

        • is it worth getting this one over the book 2? I know it's a shit ton cheaper, but like, how do you guys rate?

        • @The Informer:

If you want the Surface Book 2 sans the dGPU then it's okay, the battery life is quite a bit poorer than the SB2. Mind you 1600 is a pretty decent price for the SB1 without the dGPU.

        • +4

          @The Informer:

This listing is for an anemic dual core i7 with 8GB RAM, onboard GPU and 256GB storage for >$1600.

People pay out Apple users for spending crazy amounts on a machine that could be had for significantly less from a competitor, and this Surface Book can't even use OSX, has less I/O but costs more.

FWIW I own an Apple MBP 15" and a Surface Pro 3. I'm no stranger to spending a bit extra if I like a design or have a specific use case scenario. As much as I like the design of the Surface Book, it's the worse price to performance machine since luxury car brands decided to get into the mobile phone market making Android phones with years old specs, bad cameras and horrible screens that cost $$$$$$.

Can get a new 15" Dell 7 series with a quad core CPU, 1060 GPU and an iPad for around the cost of this years old Surface Book deal.

        • @c0balt:
This isn't anything like a Mac though.

Can you compare it to another touchscreen tablet?

        • +1

          @Presence:

It's the same design philosophy as a Mac. Better build quality, less power, less I/O, but more $$$.

The Razer Blade Stealth and LG Gram come to mind. They also come with Thunderbolt 3, but none of them are tablets.

Better off with a Surface Pro and not Surface Book if you want to use it as a tablet. Same specs for less and lighter too.

There's also the hinge issues with the Surface Book when using it as a touchscreen with the keyboard dock.. it wobbles all over the place and is pretty comical to see.

        • @Shermanpk:

I did buy one at the last sale ~1500 - and can confirm it does have the dGPU albeit the older model.

The selling point for me is having a full laptop, and also an equally as capable full tablet when needed.

What kind of MacBook spec would you get for $1,600?

and this Surface Book can't even use OSX

That's the case with all non-apple laptops. I wouldn't consider it a negative point anyway.

        • c0balt makes some good points above, but for anyone considering a small netbook type device like this check out the ASUS Chromebook Flip C302, or if Windows 10 is a must maybe Lenovo ThinkPad 13.

Both are getting terrific reviews and are best bang for bucks in comparison to an M$ branded Surface Book/Pro.

        • @c0balt: wait… which car manufacturer started making phones?!

        • @jaypee06: More than one.

        • @UFO: I got a HP X2 detach for $150 brand new

  • You know I didn’t realise the keyboard was removable. Now I’m even more confused how this is different to the SP. pay twice as much for a rigid hinge?

    • +3

I work with surfaces a lot at work. Surface books perform much better. The difference in performance between SP and SB is night and day. This is a very good price.

    • +1

pay twice as much for a rigid hinge?

The surface book has a larger display, nicer keyboard, larger track pad, longer battery life, and discrete GPU for most models.

    • +4

The Surface Pro is a tablet with a keyboard
The Surface Book is a laptop with a detachable screen.

      Huge difference

      • Isnt the Windows 10 S like not windows 10 but not windows 10?

Tbh, Can you install windows 10 PRO over the windows 10 S?

        • Can you install windows 10 PRO over the windows 10 S?

It's free to switch to Windows 10 Pro, at least till March 31st 2018.
          It's a quick process too.

      • A huge part for me is the extra USB ports on the book. I genuinely don't understand how Microsoft think 1 usb port is acceptable on the Pro/laptop.

      • +1

Im not up to date with laptops but having had a 2011 laptop as my last purchase im still stuck in gen 1 of the i7 and i5 core days. Am totally confused at all the choices these days. Just microsoft alone has the surface pro. A surface book and a suefac e laptop. Throw in just xp and lenovos myriad of laptops and its choice overload. Am seriously confusef when you look at the Surface pro vs book the specs arent too dissimilar i thought. But what is the world of difference?

Im looking for a mid sizef laptop. Coming from a 15.6" im still looking for decent screen size yet abit of portability so thinking 13" give or take. Any suggestions??? My gaming days are less so am looking for functionaly a good ultrabook style laptop. Good battery. And basic functions like connectivity and for browsing web. Watching videos and doing ad hoc tasks as i am neither a graphic designer or require certain occupation specific tasks. But good to have abit of functionality.

Are the Microsoft products more for students and the like? Some other suggested sticking to xps 13 and so on but i see even samsungs do products too.

How does one differentiate these days from a laptop detaching vs a tablet merely adding on a keyboard when quite often they all have microsoft windows and similar ram and ssds. In the firsr days of tablets they had far inferior specs and tablet specific processors but now the line seems so blurred when you get to tablets above 1 or 2k

  • +1

I woulda gotten the surface book 2 if it had thunderbolt 3, guess i'll wait for the next iteration.

  • what graphic card does this come with?

    • NVIDIA GeForce 940M - 1 GB GDDR5 SDRAM
      Screen Size 13.5 PixelSense Resolution 3000 x 2000

  • How does this compare to this: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/tablets/microsof…

Which one is a better buy?

    • Jb deal does not include kb and pen. That will put you back about ~300

      • Thanks for replying.

I think the Surface Pro comes with a pen and keyboard (the one I linked)

        • +1

Unless it is a special bundle, the (newest) Surface Pro does not come with a pen and keyboard (typecover). The Surface Pro 4 included a pen in the box, but also did not include a keyboard.

        • -1

No it docent, Surface Pro is the budget model and surface book is high end, this is so much better

        • @timmysbiscuits: yeah it's the latest

        • @nicholasfrawley: Agree, the surface book looks more appealing, although the CPU is a little older/slower I think

        • @justcallmeboss: No it is older, but so much faster. I5 energy saver vs I7 in the book

        • Up to you mate. Don't assume. Check what's included in the box.

        • @search: Yeah it's not for me, but thanks.

I don't think Windows 10 is that good as a tablet therefore I bought a laptop instead of the Windows Surface Pro Tab or Book.

I suggest you only buy this if you need a Windows 10 Tablet.

Try holding it and see how long you can hold that weight as a tablet.
