Huawei Y7 (Dual Sim, 5.5” HD, 16GB / 2GB, Cam 12MP/8MP) for $199 at JB Hi-Fi

370

I was looking for a cheap Android mid range phone for under 300 for a present. Tried different Xiaomi ones but order processing is high from all the global sellers despite paying expedited shipping (Light in the box) and they cancelled the order for me.

Y7 is a decent phone with good specs and more importantly local stock. Ordered from JB yesterday night and picked it up today morning.

review
Note: It comes with a screen protector on and a transparent case.

Snapdragon 435 is an entry level processor with xiaomi you tend to get the 600 series which is surprisingly or unsurprisingly far superior
https://m.aliexpress.com/s/item/32802702957.html?spm=a2g0n.s… The xiaomi redmi note 4

    • +4

That’s around AUD 250 for shipping in 2 months.

      • +1

According to xe is around $221 $20 more for something far superior.
Also that was. 2 minute search im sure you would be able to find something better if you looked hard enough.

The Redmi Note 4X is also a good choice. This one linked on the GB deal was for US $122.99 (AU $161.62). Although that deal may have expired, this phone usually goes for under AU $180 in sales nowadays. Same processor, however 32GB/3GB as it's storage option

          @stuhtb:

I agree with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4/4x in various options usually being a better performing phone than this Huawei Y7 for most techy people here, but for many the Y7 would do most things as well without too much noticeable difference.

In some aspects this is even a better phone as many of us in marginal reception areas can make good use of the included B28 and might need a phone within days rather than wait for weeks. Also has local warranty too if anything goes wrong.

        • +6

          @ozhunter68:

The lower end screen will be noticeable. The reason to go with 720P is because of the weaker SoC. Performance is probably similar between the two, since the Y7 hardware shouldn't need to work as hard.

It's hard comparing grey imports to local stock. You are compromising with either option. You trade warranty, after sales support, and a phone designed to work on local networks for better hardware.

Which is the right option will vary from user to user. If you care about warranty and reception than the Y7 will be your option. If you are willing to compromise and gamble then perhaps one of the cheap xiaomi options is for you.

          @Ronnnie:

I agree completely with your comments above.

One thing that has come to light and is new to me, is that for some Non Telstra issued/approved hardware even with the much talked about B28 700mHz band, in some areas you still might not get same reception/speed at certain/all times.

Surprisingly this issue ( since Telstra re-calibrating in July on wards ) has not been discussed much here on OzBargain that I have seen, but had a look into these recent comments.

Bought 2 note 4x from Shopmonk, at 185 AUD, delivered in 5 days

Currently 187 AUD, not on special. 3/32G version. AU charger.

$175+25 for the Redmi Note 4 with expedited shipping. IME you will receive items from Eglobal in a week or less. This is the one with the Helios X20 in it - with is actually faster than the SD625, but uses more power and doesn't have as many root options.

        • Thanks but $58.90 Economy express post to my 2483 postcode.

Also want the black 3GB/32GB and preferably the Note 4 with the metal unibody, not the newer Note 4X with plastic top and

bottom. Have one on the way from one of the Gearbest deals a few weeks ago for AU$173 delivered, but still waiting after

ordering on the 1st of December. Not sure if I will be getting the Original Note 4 or the Note 4X as the description and photos

show both. Looks like a late Christmas present for me next week lol.

    5.5” IPS LCD 1280x720 resolution

I understand how this is a "budget" phone, but 720p on a screen that big is perhaps not the best feature. This is something more prevalent on budget phones with screens around 5" or less as it allows for a better battery life and is less noticeable.

    • +4

Yep. It’s a trade off for extending the battery life ( 2-3 days as per the reviews. )
Less noticeable.. may be yes. I couldn’t find it much subpar holding next to an iPhone 7 Plus.

Here’s some reading material on the whole naked eye perception of HD in smartphones.

I agree with the above, to me quality of screen is more important than amount of pixels. I value smoother scrolling ( more possible with lower res screen than FHD/+ ) over higher res screen personally.

Have you tested out the dual sim function whether they are both 4G/3G capable?

  • +3

Is there any good low to mid level phone with NFC, preferably around $200 or less.

    • +3

      A Sony Xperia XA

      • +1

No gyro on the Sony. So no VR / shake n win any apps or games that use tilting. Never manage to get the backup software working. Tried Mac and Pc. Both crash at 50%

      • Thanks, not really a fan of Sony mobile phones. But will check it out

        • what about Nokia3?
you can get it around $180 from ebay unlocked.

LG G4 with change left over for some copper heat sink tape 🤔

    • Nokia 5.

I have had this phone for a few weeks and am absolutely loving it. No lag, easy to use and camera is reasonably good.

    • +1

Sounds good. Have you tested out if both sims can run 4G/3G as there are mixed reviews comments about that.

If so, how does it work/what is the se-up to use it?

      • +2

This would be good to share.
        4G/3G trials would be interesting.

      • +1

Sorry I just saw your comment. No, I've only used 1 sim in it.

Bought one of these click and collect earlier for my mom who is over 70. Perfect for her - a big step up from the ZTE Blade she currently has. NFC and Fingerprint sensor not important for her. Note that click and collect is now unavailable and stock for delivery is low. Not sure about in-store stock. Recommended to me by a friend who bought it as a try-out switch from iPhone to Android a couople of weeks ago and is very happy with it. He got it at this price and JB offered it to me at this price in store last week too. Note that there is an extra saving from this product when comparing with others in that it comes with a screen protector and bumper case (at least my mate's one from JB did) - so no need to spend $35 plus on those if you're the type that uses them.

    • +1

True that. Case and screen protector was a nice touch. I usually order screen protector and case from ebay as soon as I order the phone, but good that the click and collect was quick!

      • +1

Have you tested the dual sim setup yet to see if can do both 4G/3G? Really would like to know this.

    • Good reminder on the case and screen protector, but don't think too many OzBargainers would spend $35 on a simple soft case.

Can be had for under $10 for both on ebay ( tempered glass ) and if your organised order before/as soon you pick up phone.

Still a really nice addition and could possibly save a scratch/dint or worse broken screen if dropped before getting the protection in time.

  • How does this compare to the Iphone 5c ?

The camera crushes the Iphone but what about the speed ?

  • +1

Apparently this phone has got a country lock on and you can’t use it overseas! Bagman doesn’t provide codes. The cheapest available unlock code online is $49. JbHifi online helpdesk isn’t responding to queries.

    Anyone facing the same problem?

    • +1

Ouch! How did you come across that? Did you try to to use it o/s? I was thinking about this for a trip to Japan and so was also interested 3g/4g dual sim confirmation but this is of far greater concern…

      • +1

Yeah. I got it for the same reason but stuck at o/s now with carrier unable to help.

        • +1

Hi Gentlecrack, how did this resolve, and was it only local sims that were the problem or Australian sims on roam?

        • Thanks for all your feedback. Was that you who wrote an anonymous review regarding this issue on the jb hifi listing for this phone around eight days ago from O.S.?

A shame you did not get a chance to unlock it whilst here in Aus before you left, or at least be able to return to jb :-(

I suppose you have not tried the dual sim if second one is 2G only? Reading reviews looks like the version sold by jb is second sim 2G only!
