It really depends. I assume you are quoting ~600 taxes as 2 people?

If your dates aren't as flexible and you are looking at peak times, I think this deal is good value.
I just paid 32k points and $330 in taxes for return Syd-Tokyo during January.

If I were to buy the flights for same dates, it would be costing me ~$1100.
If we take the 1 point = 1c, I figure I've saved about $400. Not bad imo.

      • I normally buy flights when its on sales then nothing can beat its price (Jetstar 2 for 1 I guess its cheapest deal ever).
But for redemption, I think I will look at it in high season or long weekend for early booking.

        • +1

Yeah, I was going to book during the return for free Jetstar deal a couple of months ago, but even then it would have been $620 or so for the dates I'm going and no luggage included(I was also very limited to the return dates that were actually $0). The dates were also gone before I committed to book.
To me, the biggest advantage to using this for points is for flights during peak times where points aren't changing. Off-peak, I highly doubt you will be getting a good deal.

      • I suppose it makes sense because Quantas is really expensive. I haven't flown with them for a while - are they really worth double the price of Jetstar? I mean, you're still in economy class

        • Well Jetstar were also quite expensive for the end of January, I think about $7-800 for same dates, so I'd still be saving ~$200+ if just taking carry on.
          Biggest advantages were:
          - Direct flight there with Qantas is overnight whereas flying Jetstar is 6am-6pm kind of deal, so imo you need to factor in an additional night of accommodation into your calculation to Jetstar costs(or you miss a day of travel).
          - Jetstar prices are also without luggage whereas booking Jetstar flights with points, you get 20kg included, which is like $50-60 value that needs to be considered(I think, can't remember exact cost for 20kg).

      • qantas offer a direct flight to japan (matters for some ppl, especially if travelling with children)
their fares also include checked in luggage (30kg), where as jetstar discount fares do not. Adding that charge on top of the jetstar fare is pretty costly both ways. Also meals and entertainment are included in qantas flights.

of course if you don't care about all that stuff, by all means jetstar is cheaper and you be better off selling your points, or cashing out to giftcard

    • Isn't the Tokyo return supposed to be half the 70,000? That looks like the FULL points requirements.

      • leeson865 was quoting for two people

        • +1

Ahhh thanks for the clarification. I guess examples like that would be better served if it was in single units for easier comparison.

Booked one way Launceston to LA via Melbourne for around 65,000 points. I don't use points for business class and the flight was $1400 without using flights so this is a total bargain for me.

  • Holy shit this is an amazing deal

Edit: Too bad it's not in the dates I'm planning to go :(

  • Does it show 50% note anywhere in booking process or the point is just at half of the usual? Thank you.

    • +1

It says “promotion applied” or something like that. Doesn’t appear to give the detail.

    • Point is half. The points will be double when you try fly 1 November 2018. So check that way

  • Do Qantas regularly have these deals or is this a one off?

    • Going back 10-15 years, 30% off was fairly common. These days it’s slim pickin’s. If it makes sense to you do it.

Regardless of sales etc I always nope out when I see the $ fees at the end. I buy on sale and then try to upgrade.

Wonder if the "Spend $350 at Qantas Online, Get $50 Back" offer with Amex would work when using it to pay for the taxes.

The terms & conditions state "Offer not valid for spend on hotels, car rental, packages, insurance, activities, charters, Qantas Frequent Flyer, Qantas Business Rewards, Qantas Conferences, Qantas Store or Qantas epiQure".

i dont see why not. good pick up.

    • I got the $50 credited

  • Are stopovers allowed?
Partner airlines incur extra fees and pts as well

  • Booked 4 tickets for the family to HK return in school holiday (April 2018). $1430 fee + 112,000 points.

    • I was thinking about these days but then I realised its ghost festival period. Not that you have anything to worry about :)

I just booked a Syd/Tokyo flight in April for 121000 points for 2 adults + 2 children. That's as good as it gets for the value of points on economy classic reward, considering it's IN school holidays which is usually peak season for fares.

I paid additional $1200, but out of pocket expense is effectively $300 per head but i can access lounges, preferential seating etc with my membership tier with Qantas.

    • +1

Sounded good until the $1200 :(

  • BNE to johannesburg - $941 and 135k points for 2 ppl. Not bad!

  • Does anyone know how to use qantas points on cathay pacific flights, ie, adl to hkg then to hgh?

qantas site would ask me to fly from adl to mel, then hkg then use cathay for hkg to hgh

    • Not all dates have a direct flight available for redemption.

If you are flexible try different dates.

Also CX seats via QF get snapped up quickly so best to book a year in advance.

Thanks OP - booked for me and two kids to go to Tokyo over the Easter School Holidays. Went with Jetstar so it ended up being $826 - $50 Amex = $776 with 86,400 points (75k of which were freebies from an ANZ credit card).

    • Good to hear than you got the AMEX credit

    • Did your credit come through straight away?

      • +1

        Yes, almost instantly.

So I was wondering, a fare is normally valid for 353 days according to the T&C's. I am an Aussie living in NYC and was thinking of booking a return, if I booked outbound in April 18 and booked a return in October 18 but then changed the return to April 19, do you think that they would charge me the additional 50% or I would still only pay 60,000 points?

    Thanks

    • Good question. I have same query. On normal ticket pay by cash with date change allow, new fare price will apply when we change date. Not sure if on discount reward ticket like this, we can just change date. If we don't have to pay point difference then it's another benefit of reward ticket.

      • I thought it was 5000 points to change (like for like - and must be available for that discounted rate or you pay the difference) and 6000 for cancellation.

    • You would end up paying the additional points for the new booking, because your new booking theoretically wouldn't be booked while the promotion was on.

Having said that… When I changed my recent bookings (domestic) I was up for the change fee (5000 per person) as well as the ticket fee (points). Eg. Normal redemption, 8000 points plus taxes. When I booked, it was 6000 points plus taxes. When I wanted to change, their website said I'll be charged an additional 7,000 points. However… they have not charged me the additional points, so YMMV.

  • I'm 120 points short for booking 5 pax to LAX return. If I buy points from Qantas are they automatically applied to my account. Looks like pretty good promo.

    • buy from one of the people in the classified section much cheaper than Qantas website

  • what do people think abt the radiation hazard in tokyo..?

    • There's no hazard. You'll get more from the plane flying there.

    • I think Godzilla

  • Point redemption had been inflated during the promotion.

It's great to see fellow ozbargainers trying to maximise their points experience.
However no one when comparing the value of points plus taxes v an outright fare has factored in the cost of travel insurance. From my understanding and personal experience travel cover is not triggered by paying for your reward flight with your credit card (for those who have a card with travel cover). Thus you will need to buy yourself a policy which makes the deal less appealing when comparing against the cost of an outright fare.

Im looking at a return fare to LA in October/November. 65,000 points and $438 in taxes. Using the 1 cent per point analogy that is $1,088. You can get that fare price quite easily throughout the year and in the process earn points and status credits. Paying with my Amex or HSBC i also get the complimentary travel insurance. No brainer for me even factoring in my $50 Qantas amex credit.

    • Depends on your credit card. You can trigger the insurance on some ANZ cards by just spending $250 of travel bookings on it. $500 on some NAB cards.

    • Some credit cards don't require you to purchase your flights but must spend on other travel expenses (eg. hotels or car hire etc) to activate travel insurance. I think in this case direct flights to HK or JPN during peak time are the only favourable places to book using this promotion. Also, I found if booking one ways a bit cheaper as the return flight your paying in another currency (provided your credit card doesn't charge transaction fee). Do the maths before you book.

    • CBA doesn't require any spend, just activate it in Netbank

  • Thanks OP.
Has anyone tried cancelling Qantas tickets booked by classic rewards? How long does it take them to re-credit the points? Is tax/fee refundable?
I have booked flight to US using 90,000 QFF points, now it only costs 45,000 points. I don't mind paying 6000 points to cancel and rebook. (I will use the re-credited points to book another flight.)

    • +1

I've just called Qantas and been told that it takes 5-10 biz days for them to re-credit the points. Tax and fees will be fully refunded. Anyways, not enough time for me to take advantage of this sale. Just an FYI.

  • Hihi,
If I want to go to Disneyworld in Orlando from Melb, would my best choice be fly to New York and buy another flight to Orlando? I saw the flight from melb to New York does a quick stopsover in LA. Is there any chance that it can be an extended stopover in LA as I have never been to USA before and would love to explore a little if allowed? Any tips would be great. thanks

update: Just googled a bit. I think the best option is fly to LA and buy another air ticket to orlando

    • Try use the multi-city journey planner. I believe the LAX-JFK flight must be booked together with an international Qantas flight. You can find further guidance and experiences by searching for QF11 through frequent flyer forums. It's meant to be much more comfortable than the alternative domestic flights too!

      • +1

Thanks for your tip! Think now to do melb to lax, then buy my own ticket for
La to Orlando, and then buy a ticket from Orlando to New York, depart JFK to Melb

        • hav u looked at flying into DFW or even Miami?

  • Perth to johannesburg - less than $1K and 110k points for 2 people good price!

  • Anyone getting issues with bookings page?
I'm trying to book an Osaka - Melbourne flight, put in the passenger details, then clicked Continue.
The 'Confirm Your Details' popup appeared but I can't press any of the buttons.

    • Nevermind…
Who knew MS Edge is better than Chrome for Qantas page..

  • anyone having problems logging into qantas frequent flyers?

    • Yes I can't login either

  • If you pay the 'Taxes' for your reward flight using Amex, can you get the $50 back from their latest 'Spend $350 at Qantas online get $50 back ' promo??

Just booked BNE to LAX return for family of 5 after much procrastinating.
225000 points plus $2100 AUD in taxes/fees. Considering the USA wasn't even on the wishlist a few days ago for me I'm pretty happy with that.

    • I had a great time in the US when my parents took me while I was a kid. One of if not the best trip I have had. Might I suggest if flying into LA, checkout Las Vegas. Even as a kid with all the shows and things to see and do along the strip I had a AWESOME time. Do the Aneheim theme parks and all. I am actually planning to do those again next year now we can buy our own tickets.

  • how often do these deals come up?

My ANZ 75k points are in the statement but i dont think will be transferred over till the 15th.

  • just booked syd to osaka (2 adults and 1 child) ~100k points plus ~$940. Considering it is during school holiday, it is a great price.

  • Anyone know if this deal will be back…. with a newborn in the house i managed to miss it
