        • @rogsamsy: Devonshire St guy said Opal machine wasn't working this morning.

        • @tveye: how convenient.

        • @rogsamsy: I got the feeling he couldn't be arsed to do Opals

        • @tveye: AKA: his job

        • @rogsamsy:why these shop staff so hate people top up opal or myki?

wasn't part of their shop product they available whoever come in should get normal customer service not amex discriminated attitude

        • @leehungfei: Usually because they try use multiple cards in the same transaction. The woman at Woolworths Town Hall hated me when I tried to do $160 Opal top ups as that was two transactions and took up more time. So now I either do $120 or go to Coles when they have the flybuys bonus points offers

        • @kerfuffle: There really nothing wrong with multiple amex cards top up.they just don't like you take advantage

How do you top up Opal at woolies? Theres heap of place to top up in the Sydney city. Coles rarely have offers for opal top up

        • +1

@leehungfei: As someone who works in retail, I can tell you firsthand that using multiple cards in the one transaction is a time consuming process and can often lead to errors. So from your perspective, it may not be wrong, but from a sales assistant's perspective, it is time consuming, especially during busy times (which is why during the Vogue offer, I tried to encourage everyone to go when it's quiet).

I top up at Woolies by going to the Opal counter at Town Hall? Why would I top up elsewhere in the city (and get slugged a surcharge) when I can get three points per dollar on my AMEX for topping up my Opal card at Woolies or Coles? Plus Coles keep slinging me flybuys bonus offers e.g. spend $50 and get 1000 points so I top up my Opal card at Wynyard (assuming I haven't reached the maximum Opal card limit of $250).

        • @kerfuffle: Don't retail staff get paid by the hour? If I were them, I'd be happy to do something slowly (e.g. multi-card transactions) so I get paid for doing less work…

        • @cynix: Sure. But when you have a ton of work to do, especially at this time of year, the last thing you would want to be doing at work is to work slowly.

        • +1

@kerfuffle: I see. It seems inefficient to require customer-facing staff to do a ton of non-customer-related work though.

        • @cynix: I think some stores do have staff that are spefically for unpacking and filling, but other stores will have the sales assistants doing the unpacking and filling themselves while also serving customers.

        • @tveye:

Went to Devonshire St today, Indian looking guy was great, knew straight away about Amex and the $10 cash back, but he said only one card allowed, and one transaction.
Later on, changed to an Asian looking guy, and before I took out anything or said anything, he said Opal not working! BS, I think!

        • @auri: it was an indian guy when i went there. so maybe they do have a faulty machine.

        • +1

@kerfuffle: Does Coles at Wynyard do Opal recharge? Coles where I go to in Top Ryde doesn't do it though Woolies does it in the same mall.

        • @virhlpool: They sure do! Skip the queues at the Opal machines on concourse level, head up the escalators to Coles and score FlyBuys points and hopefully those three points per dollar for supermarket spend on your AMEX!

Yeah, Coles doing Opal are rare compared to Woolies doing Opal.

        • +1

@kerfuffle: Mine is Amex Essential though, so points may be different/ lower. But, Flybuys make sense.

I generally use eGift card of Woolies for Opal recharge, thereby save 5% which is probably a better saving if Coles doesn't have 1000 Flybuys points for $50 spend on for me.

  • -1

If first choice was used once can you use it again for another $20?

  • +12

Can confirm, you don't have to visit 3 different newslinks, one store is fine, received all 3 emails.

  • Is First Choice's gift card can be used in Coles stores?

  • How on universe store sumosalad class as Travel Essential??? LOL!

    • Could say the same for Purely Merlino and Ugg Kiosk.

    • Probably owned by the same group company?

  • +1

There are 2 Newslink in Sydney Airport T3 (next to gate 32 & next to gate 39) & but only the one next to gate 39 does Opal top up

    • I think you mean T2? Just checked and T3 (Qantas) has 3 Newslinks — only the one at gate 13 does Opal top ups

  • Has anyone confirmed that you receive the credit from 7-11 petrol stations as well?

    • My purchase triggered the e-mail. Topped up my Opal at a 7-Eleven petrol station

      • +3

Thanks kerfuffle. You deserve some sort of 'Field Tester' badge for Ozbargain. :D

      • Hi Kerfuffle, did you just go to any 7-eleven, or did u specifically check the location was eligible through the app

I can't seem to find a list of eligible locations (if one even exists). Even if my phone has location turned on, the deals show city locations.

        • +1

I checked that Edmondson Park 7-Eleven that was listed on the Opal retailers list and just tried my luck. Didn't bother trying to see if it was listed as a participating retailer in the AMEX app

I'm at home in south-west Sydney and just checked to see if local ones were showing up on the AMEX app and they are.

        • +2

I just went to any random 7/11 to fill up without checking the map and got Amex email straight away :)

    • +1

Hair filled up 30 bucks Petrol, split over 2 cards. Received emails instantly.

  • Are the Newslink receipts eligible for the EFTPOS comp?

    • +1

eftpos and AMEX are different :/ Your entry would be invalid.

      • I was asking because the Newslink receipts have "EFTPOS -$20.00" and "Tyro Payments EFTPOS" printed on them.

        • Well you're welcome to enter to see if you win but I'm pretty sure the terms and conditions state that you have to pay with eftpos cheque or eftpos savings. Eftpos stands for Electronic Funds Transfer at Point Of Sale.

    • Can you share link to EFTPOS Comp link? I am not aware of it.

  • Anyone know which 7-11 store is available for cashback? Filled up on the weekend but didn't receive a confirmation from Amex.

    • Edmondson Park? Probably should state what state you're in as your profile doesn't say so.

      • Lol I'm from the sunny state Victoria

        • Mulgrave one worked me.

  • Does anyone know where the newslink is at Martin place station? I could only find a relay

    • +1

Just go to Relay. Same thing.

      • +1

Thanks, got the email confirmation straight afterwards

  • Wow. Can't believe that 7-Eleven and Travel Essentials are still accepting enrolments, I thought they'd be OzBargained within a day of posting!

    • Yup. Travel essential is a hidden gem.cant believe we get to use it 3 times!

      • Yeah, pity though that Flinders is so far away from Cranny! Eh I'll get to use it eventually I guess haha

        • Unlucky me has to suffer the cranny train line everyday. I would go if i were u just for half price myki.

        • @ChaseTheSun: oh damn if that's the case then you're right it's good as. My partner catches the train every morning (the 7:49 to Flinders), do you get on that one?

        • @MathNerd: nah im on earlier ones 7.19 usually.

Get ur partner to top up!

        • @ChaseTheSun: haha she's already done $40 topup over 2 cards (she only has 2 cards haha), she didn't know it was 3 times each card!
Lol who knows, one day I might bump into you at the station ;)

        • @MathNerd: lol maybe.

        • +1

@ChaseTheSun: The guy deserves a beer. Bought him a drink instead. Helped me do 9 x transactions in one hit.

        • @schmucky: Yup, he did the same for my partner and she said the same thing!

I got the guy's dad serving me. still patient and helpful but apparently the son was better!

  • Just wondering how many split transactions 7-11 allow? I want to get a 7-11 gift card using 5 cards to buy a $60 gift card . My local 7-11 said they can only split over 2 cards per transaction . I was wondering if he just said that cause he didn’t want to deal with more cards . Anyone else tried something similar ?

    • I've only tried a 2-card split myself, but I wouldn't be surprised if they can do larger splits, it's a matter of how much effort the person wants to put in. Remember how much they're getting paid for this….

      • do what I do and simply go back the next day,

I have a few on my way home from work, so Ive been doing $30 at a time, 2 trans

        • i only do $15 each time, got a few on the way…:-)

    • +2

They can only split the transaction once (maximum 2 cards per transaction).

      • Thanks for the confirmation. Did a store attendant tell you this or do you know their POS systems?

        • +1

I tried using 3 cards at 7-11, but the store attendant me told maximum was 2 only

        • @jayc: Thanks jayc. Makes sense. Won't try going in with more than 2 cards then! :)

        • @MathNerd: they did 3 splits for us but not willing to do more

      • +1

I split a $60 transaction over three cards. I asked the cashier to put $15 on four cards, she said "yep sure". But the system would only allow three. So I ended up $15 on two cards and $30 on another. Annoying that I have to go back now to use the last credit.

  • +5

Confirming that you can top up your myki at Relay Hub inside Flinders Street station and get the confirmation email from Amex.. Thanks OP! 😊

    • Thanks for confirming AbbyL! Did you use one or multiple cards?

      • +1

        I used just the 1 card…

        • +1

          Thank you :)

    • Did u recharge in newslink as well?

      • When u top up your myki at Relay Hub, the email notification from Amex comes up as a spend at Newslink…

        • I just figured out it is the same one as it shown on the receipt, thanks! Did you pay 3 times at the same time? are they happy to do that?

        • @angelbaby: I paid 3 times on 3 different occasions as I catch the train at Flinders station everyday… But I doubt whether they would have any issues in doing so… It is usually pretty quiet there…

  • +1

For anyone using bulk Amex cards at 7-11, I was told they cannot process any more than three cards per transaction.

I was also advised that they cannot do multiple payments for large value gift cards, so I was limited to $15 gift cards.

  • +1

I did the first choice deal today and used the promotion code FREESHIP which got me free delivery. Handy.

  • nm

  • +1

Any OP pro tried getting 7 eleven gift card? Went in a store today and the girl say its only comes in $10, $25 and $80. Then check the back of the card clearly mention any values between $10-$499. Sure don't want to make her angry or piss by ask for $15 gift card at the time.

    anyone can share their experiences?

Can only think of opal top up is best option to avoid piss them off

    • +1

I did the opal top up. A lot easier for both parties.

      • Same here; less chance of holding up the queue when it's busy.

    • anyone else getting this?

im getting all my creidts but the points for the actual 7-11 transactions are coming up as zero,

not too concerned though since its only 30 points

      • +1

Nope. Got my 60 points for my $20 Opal top-up at 7-Eleven

      • I am getting the points for 7-11 opal top up too.

    • for people who never go into 7-11, what sort of gift cards do they sell?

      • +1

buy $50 prepaid visa card with 4.95 fee split 3 ways 15,15,24.95 (around 20% off)
buy $50 prepaid westfield with 5.95 fee split 3 ways 15,15,25.95 (around 18% off) [westfield card usable as eftpos card outside westfield including council rates, ALDI, best to use for those that charges no fees for eftpos but has fees on credit cards]

        • Would you know if one could pay for the prepaid visa card using the 711 card?
I am thinking of buying a $100, 711 card split over 6 cards..and then use it to buy $100 prepaid visa - which would help avoid buying 2X50 cards, assuming if I were to use 3 cards ea for $50 card.
But as 711 doesn't allow more than 2 or 3 split payments - I also wanted to check if the 711 card could be topped up?..i.e. for ex store 1 - make 2 transactions for $15 ea and then repeat the process at store 2 or comeback to store 1 at a later time..
If you have the offer on multiple cards then finding a way to buy $100 visa GC would be more cost effective instead of buying 2X50 cards…
I don't shop from 711 at all, so don't see any use of 711 GC and their fuel seems to be expensive (outlets around my place)..cheers

  • +3

Topped up Opal at Newslink Central Station Country Terminal, can split payment up to three times. Amex email came instantly. 7-11 North Ryde can split payment two times but Opal top up $10.00 or $20.00.

    • Inside the Terminal or outside the Terminal? Are you using one card for split payment or 3 cards? I went there last week to top up at Newslink Central Outside Terminal (after the exist gate), the lady who saved me will not let me split payment.

      • +1

Outside the Terminal. Use one card for split payment and I am not allowed to use any more cards.

        • +1

          Thanks for your reply :)

  • +3

Bought 15 coffees from 7-11 to keep me awake for the bargains, THANKS OP!!

  • Just tried buying a gift card and asked to split the transaction into 2

got declined saying no splits on gift cards,

sounds like a madeup on the spot rule,

lucky there are still a billion 7-11s around :)

    • I went to one of the 7-11 to fill up patrol, he accepted Amex payment, than I wanted to buy a gift card, he said you can only buy gift card with saving or eftpos card, cannot use credit card to buy a gift card :(. I called head office and question about this rule, HO told me that you are allow to use credit card to buy a gift card.

      • +2

I get these "on the spot made up" or "I'm the manager and hate my job and I want to make everyone's life miserable" rules all the time with other places too eg woolworths, Harvey Norman, Australia post

I could sit there and argue my valid point. But it won't get me what I want so I simply laugh at them and walk out and visit another store

        • so I simply laugh at them and walk out and visit another store

Lol so what's their reaction when you laugh? Do they get even more agitated?

        • +1

          @montorola:
In all my experience I don't think one of them has ever cared

  • Does anyone know what time in the morning AmEx apply credits to accounts?

    • Travel Essentials/Newslink credits came through

  • there is way to get round dealt with attitudes from 7-11 staff. just buy gift card $15 from one store with one amex then visit another store or go next day top up the card $15 with another amex. no parties feel piss this way

    • Can you top up a 711 gift card?

      • yes

        • Will they let you buy a visa giftcard with it?
