Optus 12 Months Contract, $30/17GB Per Month Via Optus Chat

1370

Hi guys, not sure if this qualifies as a deal, I only got it via chat with an Optus customer rep. Mod please move to forum if inappropriate.

My existing plan expired so I was hoping to get this deal as a "loyalty bonus" to an existing customer, $30/15Gb. But the kind Optus guy twisted my arm and offered 17Gb instead:

The $40 sim only plan with 15 GB data for $30 is a new service deal.
You need to sign up for that on a new number or a porting number. If you sign up for this new number deal now, I will give you the plan for $30 with 17 GB data as an offer for you.

I didn't want to be rude, so I accepted. They have to send me a new SIM, so not sure if I can port my existing number to that plan, but will try. Let me know if anyone else tried and got this.

Update After reading all the comments below checked with Optus to clarify the deal:
- it is a new plan, I cannot keep my old number - sadly
- after receiving and activating the new sim i can cancel the old one, so no charge for two plans as long as they are not both active same time;
Update #2 and final Finally got my new SIM delivered. Knowing it's going to be a new number decided to chat Optus anyway about keeping my old number. Got bounced to about 3 different departments and reps, told to call via phone customer service dept. Another 2 reps talking to directly. The last one said it is to much trouble to transfer my number to a new SIM, easier to port the new plan to my old SIM. Got that done in about 15 min.
Conclusion and why bother: this deal is not for the faint hearted. You also have to keep cool talking to reps, bitching doesn't help :) Why I wanted to stay with Optus so bad? Because when it works it flies! I am getting speed of 83 Mbps down, 30 up, wouldn't dream of that speed on my Telstra ADSL.

Isn't it the ozbargain spirit tho?

    • +1

      Said no Ozbargainer ever.

    • +1

Same thing happened to me when I was about to purchase Note 8 at JB hifi for $999 bargain. Got offered Telstra plan for $49 with $200 bonus JB Hi-Fi gift card.

Never been on post paid plan before, always port out the number to another provider based on ozbargain sim card bargain. Felt like I've been paying too much for this telstra plan for something I barely used especially the data and unlimited call/sms. But I got tired of porting out to new provider and currently got myself in 1 SIM card phone which make it harder to keep the main phone number.

I posted previously, I was about the same situation with OP, and try to get $30/15G plan, they just refused me stated that is for new customer only. Hence I signed the Telstra F/F plan straight away.

    • My rep sounded very keen to sign me up, could it be BlackFriday deal or smthing?

      • +4

End of month now, I believe he/she hasnt achieved the goal yet and is keen to sign you up

      • my understanding is that you wont be able to keep your existing number. which for me was a deal breaker. I tried with several reps.

i'm currently on a Telstra $2 sim after transferring off Optus on Thursday after 12+ years. I get a discount on my broadband because I have my mobile with them. I'll buy the 25% off mobile deal on Monday and port back in for the next 24 months. Hopefully by then my HFC will have been replaced with NBN and I can find a decent company to deal with.

From my research the internal port system for Optus and their wholesale network retailers is terrible. If you ever need to, the best idea is to port out to Telstra or Vodaphone, wait a day or so, and only then port back into Optus network.

        • I know with Telstra, it is possible to get a new plan, and then change the number on the line item. I'm sure it's possible with Optus as well. The trick is finding someone who is willing to do it for you, as it's a time consuming process.

    • +4

same here Optus was just dumb on its customer retention

      • I agree. I threatened to leave them because I hinted that I saw a better deal elsewhere, and without hesitation, the agent disconnected my line straightaway. No bargaining of any kind, you wanted to leave? Ok, bye! I got to taste my own medicine. Haha

    • He said the same thing to me repeatedly "NEW CUSTOMER ONLY" he then ended the LiveChat :(

      • Could you port out to a $2 Voda then port back in again and retain your existing number??

  • +1

I got the $30 per month with 15GB being an optus customer - first rep just repeated the same thing not for existing, second time around the rep got it fixed.

But, Don't know why this now is a new bargain.

    • But, Don't know why this now is a new bargain.

Me neither. Maybe 17Gb is new?

      • I am sure you started with the SIMSesational offer and got something different.

Your special deal is not published anywhere, no guarantee, not repeatable - just mention it the original post, so it will help other people try.

edit: not sure if you did, I got 300 minutes international calls with 15GB and a second sim

        • so you did retain the same number right? it's a new service?

        • @stalker878: same no, no porting was required.

        • @skinny: so you managed to signed up for this offer despite being a current optus post paid customer?

        • @stalker878: Yes, after 2 tries with different chat agents playing loyalty card (15GB not 17GB)

  • Nice deal OP.

    • +1

      Thanks Lou!

  • +1

    Any international calls included, mate?

    • They tell me it's a standard plan, so whatever comes with $40/15 is included:

      International inclusions
Up to 300 minutes to standard international calls
      (To selected countries optus.com.au/international)

  • +8

Just an FYI: I am an existing Optus customer out of contract and have had no joy from about 8 different Optus Chat reps for this new SIMSational offer.

    • +7

I grabbed a $2 Telstra sim, ported my number out. Was done in under 20 minutes but apparently its best to wait a day or so to ensure the port is properly propagated through all the other providers. On monday I'll buy the 25% off deal and port my number back to optus.

There is no reward for customer loyalty anymore. I have had my mobile with Optus since iPhone 3G and internet since it was still dial up.

      • Did it work? How'd it go?

        • yeah back on the new Optus 25% off plan now. only gotcha for me was an unexpected $8 porting fee to port my number out from Optus.

Also I waited at home with ID ready to sign for the courier delivery only to have the guy dump it in my mailbox and mark it as failed delivery without him even trying. Lazy prick. I could have done other stuff rather than wasting half my day.

      • just get that kogan. much cheaper. fuuuuuk optus. their outsource team are hopeless

        • yeah as soon as I have NBN in my area, 2020+ now it seems, Optus will lose all of my accounts. But for now I effectively pay $20 a month after discounts for my 17GB mobile plan. The HFC cable is decent as long as I dont have to ever talk with customer service.

  • tried 2 agent but no luck

  • just ported to Optus, Vodafone wouldnt match the price.

    • Yep, voda have dropped the ball in recent months, they easily have the least coverage.
They are now in price range of telstra deals, and they will lose that battle 10 times out of 10.

Also, voda's black Friday deals were just the same deals they have had they last couple weeks.

    • I was able to get Vodafone's $40 a month sim only (with 15gb data) for $36 a month (I'm an existing customer out of contract). Yes, it doesn't beat Optus, but I'm a relatively happy Vodafone customer. I have Optus cable and I really dislike Optus customer service. I had to get put through to the retention /resolution team to get the discounted plan, the normal sales staff can't offer discounts. (Another reason I wanted to stay is I have a 2nd service on contract, and wanted to share data)

  • +3

plans just keep getting cheaper, this is why 24 month contracts are just not worth it right now. I'm currently on the optus $40 plan for 12gb of data but am now switching to kogans prepaid (cheapest i could find) $304 for 12 months, 16gb. Will return to the optus/telstra network in the future. Hopefully it will be unlimited data plans for a cheap price by then.

    • Link to this plan?

        • This plan is even cheaper now on Kogan. 16gb a month $255 for the year. Just over $20 a month.

        • @serpserpserp: i got it even cheaper by using kogan gift vouchers (bought the voucher at discounted) plus referral

          the 16gb becomes $17/m
          the 6gb becomes $13/m

but if we buy that 365 days plan it is actually same as signing a year contract? except no early termination will be charged if we left but we already paid for 1 year if we port out in the middle we wont get refund

        • @serpserpserp:

You're right! They also increased the data for those who bought it higher like me. I now have 23gb each month which is pretty amazing value!

  • +1

Try suggesting to online chat that you port to prepaid, then port back to get this deal.
I did similar to Mrs slikstick's account and had her on a 'new customers only' plan and had it sorted over a night shift. Mrs didn't have any disruption to service or number changes.

    • Will give it a try once i got my new SIM - thanks mate!

  • +2

Just a word of warning, I am still having to deal with Optus for them to have the bonus 2GB of data show up. It’s month two, and despite confirming that the bonus has been applied but needs time to show, I’m seeing nothing on my end. Very frustrating when promises of follow up are also not carried out.

Great offer, but I’ve spent hours trying to get this and other problems sorted.

    • Thanks for the heads up, I asked my rep twice about this and he reassured me twice that it's all solid : )
But they could be like politicians before elections.

      • That’s what they kept saying to me. Thankfully I had the transcripts to prove the offer they gave me on sign up. However, still chasing them up and it’s increasingly frustrating.

        • I had to do that with my layers of discounts. My bill would come up to $30 when it should be $14 for 10GB had to call up every month which was a pain.

        • @R3XNebular:
          What deal did you get?

How you get $14 for 10gb?

        • Same here I got transcript but 2gb not showing.

        • @dragonindespair:

I’m still dealing with it now, after countless online chats and calls. Very disappointed.

  • Works for existing Optus customers??

  • +10

Just experienced the worst online chat ever last night, and it’s from Optus! Really makes me appreciate Telstra. Such a big difference after this interaction with Optus.

All started from asking a simple question of what is my early termination cost, then got transferred up to 6 times to different agents and A LONG wait between each one for them to re read the chat…. and then retention’s team don’t know anything and wanted to transfer me back to sales to find an offer

Sales then pointed me to the Optus website for their deals ROFL!!

Which then transferred me back to retentions.

I asked about the $30/mth 15Gb offer they had for new contracts and they retention’s seems to agree and give extra $5 credit to recontract… transferred me back to sales with which sales says he will not do it as it’s only for new services… omg… seriously lol… 1hr ++ later on a chat…

I just finally confirmed my termination cost of $12 and then ended the chat. Hopeless muppets they are! Much different than the many Telstra online chat I experienced lately! (Actually 5 times I went on Telstra chat for signing up 5 different mobile services. No waiting or palming me off issues at all)

Got the whole Optus transcript saved and it’s funny to re read omg

    • Post it on reddit or somewhere :P

    • Optus livechat is useless. Using private messaging on their forums (after complaining) seems to get things done.

  • +1

Just a heads up to anyone who is thinking about this deal… buy a $2 sim first and make sure you can actually get signal in your area. I stupidly trusted their online coverage tool which stated full 3g/4g coverage, being close to a city I never thought it would be a problem considering they cover "98.5%" of Australia apparently.

    • +3

      Not Australia. Australian population.

    • Sucks to be in the 1.5%

  • chatting to optus now, porting from telstra,
asked the rep whether she could do 19gb for $30 plan, a straight "no", then asked if anything else can be offered, she's checking with her boss as we speak now.
edited: She said no, no additional data applicable

  • Very very nice

  • +1

    new number

  • +4

Hate to break it to you, but I think you signed up for a new plan without realising it. The new SIM card will be attached to a new plan (unless you’re changing from a micro-SIM to a nano-SIM, for example). You aren’t able to ‘port’ numbers over between Optus plans as ‘porting’ only occurs between carriers. I expect you’ll be in for a rude shock when you get your next bill, or should I say bills, as you’ll have two services now.

    • That would be a lousy deal, I better check with them again before activating the new SIM. Thanks mate!

  • +1

I started a port for my two numbers from Vodafone (was looking for a deal to replace my current 2 x $40/14GB) 30 minutes ago. I just told the rep 'a friend' said he signed up for a $30/17GB deal and they referred me to the other $30/15GB data sheet, then confirmed they will give me the extra 2 x 2GB for the plans. Nice one OP, thanks! :)

    • +1

Take a read of my earlier comment. I signed up three services a couple of months ago and the rep offered a bonus 2GB on all three. Two months later and I’m still chasing them up about it. Despite being assured it’s applied, the bonus data allowance isn’t shown in the app or online. I have another separate service, and the bonus data shows on there. It’s a very frustrating experience.

Keep an eye on your data allowance tab, and save all chats if you can.

      • Damn, thanks for the heads-up. Though since most telcos are the same, I figured it'd be smart to double check the first statement!

  • +1

I think OP just signed up for a new plan. I dont think OP can keep his current no by porting it over. The Optus consultant tried to do this with me when I chat with him.

OP should clarify with the consultant again.

    And Optus, F U.

    • All true, except the last statement, I cannot condone such activity with inanimate objects.
      Updated my post as above.

  • +4

Webchat second attempt, this time asked for 17GB straight away, the rep said yes instantly.

  • Optus charged $40 or the first month and $30 after. Beware!!

    • Yeah I think this was one of their deals, $10 discount kicks in from 2nd month. Can anyone confirm?

      • if that's the case they can't say $360 min total cost over 12 months!

        • $370 is still within those boundaries

        • @Scorn: How does that work? Anyway, confirmed through chat the agent said the discount applies from the first month and the first charge will have the discount applied.

        • @cucumber: $360 is the minimum total cost… you won’t pay less then that. So any extra fees charges or calls will be on top of that amount.

        • +1

@Scorn: but if Optus charged $40 for the first month then the minimum total cost would have to be $370, as opposed to $360. Unless I'm missing something here.

        • @cucumber:

Ah maybe its a delay but you get the extra $10 at end of contract.. i just know some plans are $30 and some are $40 with $10/month discount which Optus seem really bad a honouring.

    • I contacted them, pushed their rep while talking on the phone. They credited the difference so I only paid $30.

It's odd, because on the first bill the discount was like $1.32 or something, and that was listed as the '25% discount'. When I asked where that came from, and why it wasn't $10 (0.25 x $40), they were confused as hell, but insisted that 0.25 x $40 is $1.32. Took half an hour for him to finally understand and he did his best to help me out and credit the difference so ended up paying $30 per month, as advertised.

  • FYI, from someone working in telco you can hust port your number from optus to telstra or vice versa on a $2 sim then port back in as a new number. Generally speaking a porting number is counted as a new number.

    • +1

This is a stupid process and should not be encouraged… I outright asked 'You would rather lose a customer who is out of contract, than allow them to sign up to a plan that encourages new customers ?'.. They couldn't answer which to me is an automatic yes.

It is better to just leave that telco and not reconsider any offer from them for at least a 3-4 years. The more people that do this, the more they would be forced to rethink their retention policies.

  • same here, just argued a lot with them but still got refused. i have been using their $40 plans so far and now new coustomers can get cheaper and better than me, what a logic. they even said i can change my current number to telstra and be back to get this offer, maybe i should pricebeat from telstra

  • I don't wanna say this but since I recontracted with them (not via this deal) the network is working terribly. Very poor internet signal and sometimes even no coverage even in inner city (very close to CBD). This is ridiculous. Good deal only if you get coverage.

  • Anyone have any luck with getting Virgin to price match this

Want to get a family member on this so i get get data gifted :)

    • This is relevant to my interest.

Currently on $40 unlimited 10gb with rollover on virgin.

  • Thanks! Signed up and got the 17GB. The agent then offered a Gen5 iPad 9.7inch 32GB (wifi + cellular) with 10GB+5GB bonus for $35 over 24 mths but I had no use for an iPad.

    • You turned down an ipad for about $125 that you could have sold?

      • +1

        $35 x 24 = ….. (it would be data only… as an addon service)

  • These guys wanted me to pay $114 for an error I made with Bpay.
Their Customer service is poor and I only use Optus as they are the only provider of cable in my area.

  • Does Optus have data rollover like virgin?

  • I just signed the wife up for this, thanks!

    • glad it worked for you, cheers!

  • I just re-contracted the other day with Optus $40 per month 15GB data for 12 months. Now I see this and feel ripped off. Been an Optus customer for over 2 years and didn't get the above offer when I re-contracted via Chat.

    • I dont think you could have kept your phone number though. $40 for 15gb on the optus network is still a good deal.

    • you could chat them up and try to change the plan, although they will resist for sure. Some of the reps seem more "customer friendly" than others.

    • Re-contracted how??? I can’t get them to do it on my expired $50/15gb plan

      • I have a bundled NBN/home phone/mobile business plan which had expired so had gone to monthly. They put me back on a 12 month contract and bumped up mobile data from 10GB to 15GB.

  • +1

Got the exact 17GB deal today and switched from Vodafone to Optus. Thanks a lot for posting it on OzBarhain

  • +1

JUST AN UPDATE. 27/11/2017, 7:30pm, I was able to sign up by talking to Optus Chat live.

$30, 17Gb, 12month contract, however you can use it for 24months at the same deal.

  • If I have been using Jeenee (which which uses optus line) and haven't had any problems with coverage. Does that mean I won't have any issues with coverage with Optus as well?

  • +1

Thanks for the deal! To let everyone know my experience porting in and out with Optus to get this deal:

    1. Bought a $2 sim - $2 Boost sim from Kmart
    2. Ported my existing number out – easy to do, took about 10 min online + ½ hr swap carriers
    3. Waited a day to be removed from the Optus system - not sure it mattered cause I was still on the Optus system
    4. Went to Optus online chat and said “My friend recently changed to Optus on the $30/15gb data and got 2gb data bonus”

    a. First person I got wouldn’t give me this deal and asked for my ‘friend’s’ name, dob, number etc. Declined and left chat.
    b. Second person was happy to give it to me straight away.

I’m now waiting for the sim to arrive….
