  • A bit off topic but is it better to get dedicated modem and router or a modem router should do the trick? Also would this one be suitable for NBN?

    • +7

With an Asus router (e.g. RT-AC68U) and a separate modem you can run Merlin firmware (https://asuswrt.lostrealm.ca/) on the router for additional features. You can also pick the best (cheap) modem for your situation and run it in bridged mode.
With a combined Asus modem + router you are limited to Asus' firmware only.

I'm on NBN FTTN running Asus RT-AC68U with Merlin firmware and then a cheap $20 second-hand Telstra TG799VAC as my bridged modem. An example of what you can do with Merlin on the router - I run AB-Solution (http://ab-solution.info/) to block ads which works very well.

      • Thanks for the reply, total noob here but trying to set up my NBN that would maximise my speeds. Would your method work for FTTP? So it doesn't really matter if the modem is a cheap one as long as it is directly connected to the phone line/Ethernet?

Also is the set up hard?

        • +1

You dont need a modem for FTTP or HFC. Buy a router and plug that into the NBN box.

        • As per Knoxis' comment you don't need a modem on FTTP. So just buy a RT (router) version.
Setup is pretty easy. Asus have a "Quick Internet Setup Guide" button in the management interface that steps you through the settings to get the internet up and running.

        • @L45er: Did not know this! Thanks! I think I'm favouring the router you mentioned RT-AC68U. But a quick search on ozb showed: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/327856. Is it hard to flash it and use the merlin firmware?

          Sorry for all the questions!

        • +3

Pretty straight forward. Download firmware from Merlin website. Unzip. Upload firmware via the router's page.

@4tran: Note the one you've linked is a T-Mobile branded US version of the RT-AC68U called the TM-AC1900. It can be flashed back to be a RT-AC68U but requires a few steps to do it (http://www.bayareatechpros.com/ac1900-to-ac68u/). I'd assume it would also have a US plug so you'd need an adapter for AU.

        • @L45er: holy.. those steps looks complicated. thanks for your help though! I might save myself some confusion and get this deal instead!

  • Ohh dear! just observed that ASUS has a limited number of stores participating -

So not sure if I will get the cash-back!

Does anyone know if ASUS will honour a purchase from another ebay store?

    • +3

This isn't the full list. Scroll down farther to see stores from states other than NSW, as well as online stores. Sydneytec is on the online list. The question is whether ASUS will accept Sydneytec eBay purchases.

      • O yes! that is correct.

      • why wouldnt they accept the ebay purchase? couldnt u just request that sydneytec send u a proper receipt?

        • Looks like I will get the cashback for the eBay purchase as the seller has updated their listing with the Asus promo cashback signage :)

    • As below this can't be the full list.

Harvey Norman has to be on it as they have exclusive sales of the RT-AC86U and DSL-AC88U.

OzBers had reported various problems with the administration of ASUS's EOFY cash back offer. I hope it will be smoother this time around. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/320865

  • Can get the same router with 5% off for $160.55 - sure, isn't a cash back store but given price hikes for eBay: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-OEM-Asus-RT-AC68U-Wireless-A…

EDIT: actually it is a T-Mobile variant, seller claiming it to be technically identical…

    • This is OEM version of Asus RT-AC68U AC1900 Wireless Router , from T-Mobile. Appropriate AU plug is provided, technically 100% identical to Asus RT-AC68U.
    • Latest official ASUS ASUSWRT firmware. If you would like to have Merlin firmware installed, please contact seller before 3PM"
    • The price I had quoted earlier was for the Modem Router variant (DSL)

Dammit, just bought one of these the other day with the Ebay 20% off sale. The other annoying thing is I haven't even received it yet.

  • Seems like a recurring yearly thing from Asus. I was going to buy from wireless1 with 16% + extra 10% from eBay but was held back because I predict this will come.
The extra 10% code is no longer valid but there is the 5% code available + $30 cashback.
I believe there is a 10% code coming soon but the 16% from wireless1 may expired at that time.

    • @bargain Zombies - which 16% code from Wireless1 are you referring to?

You may be able to use PING20 at the SydneyTec ebay store, but am not sure if ASUS will honour an Ebay purchase for the cashback. I think it should as their T&Cs do not exclude Ebay.

  • I have submitted the details to Asus a few weeks ago but so far no feedback from them.

    • I've submitted as well. Strange that there's no confirmation at all.
