Remember to cancel subscription before next billing month if you do not intend to keep paying full price of $9.95/month. I believe you can cancel immediately and it will expire after the period.

Not that I can see. Bought the 1 month for $1 dollar for myself with the 'join' option then went back to try the 'buy as gift'. You only get full priced 6 or 3 month options with 'buy as gift'.
I can confirm that you can cancel immediately and still keep playing until the month runs out.

Stops working after period. You are basically renting the titles.
I had a nightmare cancelling my subscription, initially I turned off auto renew but it renewed anyway! in order to cancel I had to spend 20 min on live chat with microsoft and provide the original order number for my first months subscription. $1 is great by not incentive enough to go through all that again
Doesn't seem to work if you've used the 14 day trial. Was showing as $1 for me, thought I'd use the trial first, now shows as $10.95.

Game pass gives you access to play specific games for free as long as you're subscribed. Kind of like Netflix, for games.
Xbox Live gold is your subscription to play online, get game discounts and a few free games each month.
