  • Good price. How does the quality compare to the Japanese brands (Tamiya etc)?

Why "Suitable age: Above 14 years old"? To fast for an 8 year old? :)

Why "Suitable age: Above 14 years old"? To fast for an 8 year old? :)

What do you think? A projectile capable of doing 70 kmh is a good idea for an 8 year old? Heck why not a 4 year old as well.

      • i dont think a mabuchi 540 will pull that much speed

be that as it may, these things require adult supervision if give them to sub 14y.o

        • Can definitely get very close with the gear ratios they're using.

    • +1

It takes a lot of self control for younger kids. It is very very fast. My child has used the truck version for over 3 years now. He is 8 now. We have gone through a fair bit of spares due to the occational crash

      • That'd be the original A979, so if that's fast, add another 20+km/h to it ;). This is the upgraded B version (more recent), so faster and more robust overall, but won't take as much of a beating as the truck.

      • Yeah, the truck has been awesome for my 8 year old :)

  • yeah this thing flies…managed to buy one for approx A$55 about a year ago - great car for the price
    Still going too!

  • Any suggestions for a decent RC car for a 7 year old? The Kmart cheapies we've had so far are too slow/fragile, while this one is way too fast for around the house :)

    • $12 mini drone.

I wouldn't advise getting this because it's 27MHz and I don't think it has proportional steering plus only 700MAh AA battery pack won't last long. Probably lots of other reasons too. This is very much an old school toy grade RC car. Spend some more and get 2.4GHz with proportional throttle and steering and LiPo battery for more power or endurance.

This is a very popular car at the moment with lots of positive reviews on youtube. Note not 4WD. I just bought one. Get another couple of dollars off with code truck9116

        • Thanks for that - getting a better idea of what to look for. 38 km/h might still a bit fast, as it's for inside the house and out in the not-huge yard, not the street or track, and it'll definitely be bumping into things.

        • Ended up buying this before noticing the 9.2v battery… Standard lipo won't work, hard to find spare batteries… Might try and build aa size cage for lifepo4 batteries or try out a 2s 7.4v lipo…
Btw went with this rather than OP because 1/12 vs 1/18 size, which should give better clearance on grass for kids in the backyard.

        • Bugger, I didn't notice that either. There's always something I miss.

I may have to try and get some 14500 cells and make up a pack too, and one of these for the connector.
          https://www.banggood.com/9115-S911-112-Battery-Adapter-New-V…

        • @Rogerwilco: it seems to run ok on 2s, 3s and even 4s lipo according to crazy people on YouTube. I'm thinking I'll grab a few 2s packs. I think hobbyking is pretty much the only place shipping batteries now.

        • @Rogerwilco: hmmm.. Didn't notice the connector… What a hassle. I'll need to chop that to use Xt60…

        • @Rogerwilco: where do you get 14500s from?

        • @MrDixit: Yeah not sure what I'll do regarding batteries. The best I found for 14500s is this listing on eBay.

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/222110138355?ssPageName=STRK:MESI…

        • @MrDixit: Mine was delivered today. Looks great and runs very well. Impressed with the suspension.

        • @Rogerwilco: awesome. Mine is still showing "packed" status (not shipped). BTW found that zop power lipo can be ordered on eBay, about 12 bucks for 1500mah. You need to have a charger etc though.

        • @MrDixit: Thanks bought a 1300mah one to try. I couldn't find a 1500mah of the right phyical size. Charger is no problem.

That's pretty poor that it hasn't shipped yet. I was surprised mine came so quickly.

        • @Rogerwilco: YouTube vids show peeps using velcro straps to strap the battery on top of (rather than in) the battery cage. You can use a parallel cable to put one 1300ma in the cage, and one strapped on top :) ps: it car got shipped today after I sent a msg…

        • @MrDixit: Glad yours is shipped now. Bad news about the lipo I bought on eBay. The seller (ellieshang) sent me a message saying they can't ship it due to restrictions. So I'm getting a refund. If you try and manage to get one can you send me the link where you got it? Thanks

    • The one on sale at Aldi starting yesterday is pretty good.

These are great! I have the A979-b (mini-truck version, much the same drivetrain etc) and it flies. Measured 62km/h on a very short stretch (via GPS).

If you're going to be using it a lot, consider getting a spare gear.

Battery seems to last a lot longer than 8 mins for me.

  • Free shipping makes this a GREAT deal. For example, shipping on the older model is US$26…

    • you can use coupon code SALE10 =)

  • Any chance of a deal on a brushless buggy/truck?

    • which one do you want ? try do it

  • Can anyone vouch for how this goes on grass? Better off getting t governing with more clearance?

    • +2

Fine on short grass, in terms of power, not so easy to control though :P, but more than 2cm and it gets bogged easy
My biggest issue is dust in the main gear… the cover is ineffective

Also adjustable toe in would be sweet, my outer edge tires are bald :P

      but absolutely worth it though

      • Thanks for that. Went with the 1/12 linked above for clearance.

  • I've read people getting metal gear replacements for these cars and swapping them out…this true?
Also would a spare battery be a must?

    • extra battery here https://goo.gl/Cf1zEK

          Hobbyking.

        • @MrDixit: How do you find the same one? I tried all sorts of search keywords! :(

        • +1

          @killabob:
I tried to find one, but the battery compartment size on this car is tiny. Best I could find is this, but the dimensions are bigger than the sizes given above, so you might struggle to fit it in.
          https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-1500mah-2s-25c-lipoly-ba…

You might need to go for smaller capacity batteries, which won't last long. Or get a bigger battery and attach it to the car using velcro strips rather than trying to fit it in the battery compartment.

This is how you do it in case you have better luck:
In the menu you can choose product finder >lipo> then put in the battery size dimensions from above. Choose 2 cells at the last option, and you'll get a list.

Make sure you only select the ozzy warehouse (global should not be I highlighted).

Its 10 bucks shipping if you spend less than 50usd which kind of sucks.

        • @killabob: you'll also need a pair of t plug to Xt60 adapters because hobbyking tends to use Xt60 connectors, while it looks like this car uses t plug. Only a buck or so each, but a hassle.

I have the two of the B versions (buggy and truggy) the buggy is faster and handles better as it sits lower and the tires grip more. The truggy tires don't grip as well causing wheel spins and at high speeds it rolls on sharp turns.

I strapped an old phone to the buggy and fired up the GPS speed app. It reached 62km/h till I ran out of road, rolled the car and scratched the hell out of the phone. Probably would have gone faster if I had a longer run and not had the weight of the phone holding it back.

Loads of metal parts, I even purchased an alloy chassis and full brushless conversion kit.

  • how does this compare to the jethopper?

    • Turbo switch on or off?

  • you can test and compare =)

  • Can it be used at the beach ?

    • I think is ok =)

      • Think ? That's a key feature to know before buying it.

        • checked , be used at beach

  • Can you please check the shipping cost (US$32.95!!) of the A979B to Australia? Since this RC car is more or less identical in size to the A959B, it doesn't make sense that shipping cost for A959B is FREE to Australia, but so much more expensive at US$32.95 to ship the A979B to Australia.

  • Anyone received their order yet? I`m not even able to find out if it has shipped yet.

  • I haven't received mine yet either. I ordered on the 26th of November thinking that I'd receive it for Christmas!

My order number is RBN17K26K3215-6SUND2. Torben, can you please look into it? I'll also email cooperation

    • Reu ,

      http://www.17track.net/zh-cn/track?nums=LX016306473CN

      • Torben,

There's been no response from [email protected] so I guess it's time to lodge a dispute with PayPal or my credit card.

That link shows that it's been stuck at Shenzen airport since 28/11/2017. That's a long time to be at the airport.

        • Today had received , right ? =) thanks for your waiting !

        • @torben bauer:

Finally got it today. Slow delivery but it's an impressive unit for the money.

          Thanks.

        • @reu:

Yes , because of some problems with shipping before.
