I was looking for a good price on a budget drone to use for my honeymoon in the Maldives, just for a bit of fun and a few videos - nothing professional

Thanks to thatonethere's recommendation in this post, I came across the BAYANGTOYS range and after doing some research the new X21 seemed to suit my needs.

Description:
BAYANGTOYS X21, based on X16, has been significantly improved. The RC quadcopter equipped with two global positioning systems - GPS, so it can hover automatically and stay wherever you want steadily. You can use the 8MP camera to take 1080P 30fps videos and transfer 720P 60fps FPV to your phone via WiFi connection within 250 - 300m away from the drone. The gimbal, whose pitch and roll axis can be adjusted manually, allows you to take smooth shots from different angles. In addition, the intelligent flight modes, like Follow Me and Point of Interest, enable you to get desirable photos or videos easily.

Main Features:
● Dual GPS modules enable precise Position / Altitude Hold, Follow Me and Point of Interest outdoors
● 8MP camera stabilized by a gimbal to take 1080P 30fps HD videos and transmit 720P 60fps FPV within 250 - 300m

Gearbest had the best price I could find - at 28% off. After chatting to gearbestrep I was able to shave a few extra dollars off the price with coupon:Wombat1108 (Limited to first 50 stock ,3 times per account,HK,AU,NZ,MY,SG,MO,TW only!)

I just bought one! What do you think? A good buy? Also, do you think I'd be able to use with a GoPro? Even though it has a 1080p camera, I'm sure a GoPro would be ideal :)

  • Vendor in title please.

  • great…seems to say that it does most of the features of the other big name brands … but what happens if there is something that's not working all of a sudden? is there a local support network that is established? would be amazing to fly in the maldives!! remember not to take focus away from the spouse and congrats again on ur wedding! BTW these things are not light, u have to buy a backpack for transporting it and they take up almost 5kg if not more …

    • Thanks for the advice! I guess I'll have to travel light! Any recommendations re backpack?

these things dont just fit in any backpack without the risk of damage…normally they have backpacks specially designed for them…just engineer a solution with a lot of padding now that u have already bought it and pray for the best

If anything this may be more repairable than a DJI by yourself, but yeah there is no "local warranty" you could rely on.

You're looking for a drone to take on your honeymoon? Have you really thought this through?

Haha. My wife actually came up with the idea! I don't doubt that there is a high chance it will not get used though haha.

Thanks Wombat. I've been looking at these for a while so I bit the bullet and bought one. From all accounts it's a good quad copter for the money but still toy grade so the camera is pretty terrible, but by using a GoPro it would be many times better. The one thing that won't be very good for the Honeymoon videos is that the gimbal isn't stabilised at all so it won't be nice and smooth, unless the GoPro has built in stabilisation. A proper stabilised gimbal makes an enormous difference. There are one or two videos on Youtube on how to fit a stabilised gimbal to the X21, but it's a bit involved to get it working from the remote control.

I got my X21 today and am very disappointed with the quality control. I know it's basically a toy but it should still work and be usable. When I first opened the box I took out the transmitter and heard something loose inside. Took the back off and a lump of solder fell out. Once I had that back together I plugged the battery into the drone to test the motors and transmitter. When the motors were turned on it made a loud noise from one motor. Turning that motor by hand you can feel it's stiff and sometimes doesn't want to turn at all. So a faulty motor. Just great. Then I thought the battery charger was missing but for some stupid reason they stick it underneath the foam packaging. So I decided to plug in the camera and give that a test. Wouldn't you know it, the camera is faulty as well. Something's wrong with the usb power socket. Need to wiggle it and sometimes will get a green light for a second, then goes off again. Same thing happens using another usb lead from camera to a PC, so definitely the camera connector at fault. After this I would not recommend getting one of these.

Check out my short videos of the noisy motor on youtube.
