  • Mine just arrived today. Has a WD80EZZX inside.

Edit: From futher searching appears they are WD green (now blue) but according to a reddit user they are Ultrastar He8 with WD branding and turned down to 5400rpm an no TLER

    • These don't have anything weird going on with the usb board? just a standard desktop drive with a usb board attached, so easy to decase?

      • +1

Super easy. There are tutorials how to decase without breaking any clips, I just went in and broke them. Inside there's just a board Philips screwed onto the drive. The drive is screwed with a torx to the internal enclosure. That's it.

Here's some more info on what drive they are: "January 2016 Drives are WD Branded firmware still 100% hgst drives though slowed to 5xxx rpm and tler default off "

Cheers.. yeah, I bought a few 4tb seagate externals that are now coming up to 3 yrs old so time to replace them.. I just broke the clips too and removed the usb board.. I just remember reading that some new drives have a usb only connection removing the chance to use them as a sata drive..

          cheers (y)

    • Have you tried to enable TLER at all? Curious if it can still be enabled on the newer firmwares

      • No. I'm using them in a ReadyNAS in X-RAID which doesn't use TLER i've been told. Also told enabling TLER without raid is bad for data integrity.

  • Do these have HW encryption turned on by default?

  • Latest reports of Amazon for the 8TB says WD80EZAZ, whatever that is.

    • where does it say that? Can't find the code in any reviews

      • 2nd answer to the second question as I see it…."Ordered Oct 28, 2017. I got a WD80EZAZ with 256MB cache
By xiaosong on November 1, 2017"

Here are some Crystal DiskMark benchmarks I just did if anyone was interested. Using USB 3.0

  • pardon my ignorance but isnt it better to buy 2 4TB drives at $140 each? You pay an extra $40 for australian warranty and having portable drives. thats just me though

    • +1

Many people who buy this are going to take out the drive to use in a desktop or server, so go with the 4TB drives if you want portability.

  • Amazon AU is opening soon, perhaps worth waiting for them to open here to get the HDD faster?

    • Again?

      • What I meant was to wait for Amazon store to open in AU, so that you can get the HDD faster (as it will be shipped from AU warehouse)

        • +3

Youd have received the HDD already before Amazon AU is likely to open, plus nobody knows what their prices will be like.

        • I know I know.
I was trying to say every year before Christmas "Amazon is opening warehouse in Australia" - the same story again and again.
Third time lucky - this time it can be real.

        • @SickDmith: they have actually been job ads, warehouse location, ect, so I think they are actually doing it this time.

        • @psterio: The prices will be a minimum 10% higher than the equivalent in US because of GST. Current purchases less than A$1000 from Amazon US are GST exempt until July 2018.

        • @SickDmith: oh…is this the third year? Didn't know…there must be lots of legislation to have them here

Postage from Amazon is pretty quick, it's an estimated 2 weeks for this item.
It wouldn't make sense to wait for an arbitrary time frame of Amazon AU opening.

  • This article is good to remind us do the test before drive shucking
