These aren't specials. Supermarkets just have regular pricing (such as above) and super inflated pricing. I walked down an isle yesterday and literally 90% of the products had yellow "SALE!" tickets. It's called sub-literate marketing and was initially thought to only be effective when directed at lower social classes. Our supermarket chains here in Oz don't discriminate however, and have taken it to a whole new level by treating the entire populace as though they're hill-tribe slack jaws. It's a repulsive practice but one we're seemingly lumbered with now.

You’re clearly very passionate about supermarket pricing strategies.

      I walked down an isle

      Which island was it?

      • +1

        Gilligan's.

      • +4

Pedantry island. It's a fun one. Bring your bathers.

        • Isn't that what Cardinal George Pell has been accused of doing?

      I walked down an isle

      Congratulations! When's your honeymoon?

sometimes i wonder if the price history column is even worth it, this post is less cluttered and just as helpful. Great work sween!

    • +10

I find it useful because then I can get an idea of how often the item is discounted if I miss out this week. Love your work!

      • +2

Oh cool, I'll ask sween for the spreadsheet. Sorry i was considering doing a combined post like doweyy did but i also saw advantages to keeping them separate.

        • +5

I prefer Coles and Woolworths separate. Also the price history column is great, if it's been 10+ weeks since then I'm always curious.

        • +3

          @sween64:

would it be possible to compare unit pricing? for example a big discount on 200g peanut butter usually just brings it down to the everyday unit price of the 780g size. but when the large size is on discount I would buy several.

    • +2

The price history column is essential. It gives an indication of what is a genuine uncommon sale price and what is merely frequent discount pricing.

Mars M&M’s dairy chocolate blocks are made in China.

Written in the smallest of font on the back of packet.

    • Exactly. Personally I won't buy. But even at this discounted price of $2.40 I think it's too high a price. Maybe if it was 50% off its 50% price it would be worth it.

  • +5

Thanks for the hard work OP!

    Does this start today? Thanks

      yes

Time to stock up on some Extra Bloody Hot. I wish I remembered how much the 250mL bottle was from Costco so I could do some calculations.

    • +1

      Next time keep your receipt.

      • +1

I usually do but it was nearly a year ago so I don't want to go hunting for it.

        • +2

If only there was a website which tracked price history… ;)

        • +2

@doweyy: I know right. If only Costco had a website with their prices!

        • +1

          @jazoom:

Haha yes! If only their prices were transparent outside of the shop :(
