Looking to Get a BMW M2

I am looking to get a BMW M2.

Does anyone here have one and what were their experiences?

I'm not completely sold on their reliability and ongoing costs tbh. What kind of costs do you guys get with your BMW?

My other option was a Mustang for about 50 grand cheaper

Edit: I am fully self aware of my resemblance to an investment banker. I know it's a stupid decision. I just want one. Got no excuse. If our friend would like to chip in on my investment decision, I would love to hear his (probably biased) opinion

    please, nobody say it.

      Bikies?

      Ohh… the Westpac thing

    • +1

Spoilsport. Flogging a dead horse isn't going to make him any deader.

      • +7

Flogging a dead horse is infinitely nicer than flogging a live horse.

    • +10

make sure you look under the bonut thingy?

    • +16

      Third party Insurance ?

"Hi all, I am a student in my first year, and just bought a BMW, and had an accident ( my fault ) and crashed in a Tesla. What should I do ? I do not have third party insurance. Any advice welcome"

        • +18

I uhh think he was joking

    • OP, are you an analyst at Westpac?
This is an investment with high yield according to your colleague

      • +32

        I'm his boss

        • +3

          Well played

        • +3

You hiring? I need to buy a new sports car too!

    • Go on Centrelink to afford it? Hahaha

I need one because my last really old BMW died and I can't put my DJing equipment in anything else except a new BMW.

  • +23

50 grand cheaper and you save on those nasty ANCAP stars as well….

    did i say it?

    • +3

      rekt figuratively and literally

  • +7

Guy at work just bought a Bmw m140, he said it’s about 95 % of the car the m2 is but it’s also about 50k cheaper

    • +37

about -50% the looks of M2

      • agree - so ugly

    • +2

That's true. It just doesnt look as decent

    • +1

      M140i is a great car.

M2 is a better drivers car, brakes, LSD, etc. etc. Plus the fat guards of the M2.

I would say the M140 is 80% of M2 at 60% of the price.

      • +10

I have a dining table with four chairs and a plate which I use as a steering wheel. I’d say it’s 13% of the car that the M2 is at 97% of the cost.

        • +1

          That’s one expensive dining set!

        • +1

          Lower that bad boy

  • +24

this post ruins my day suddenly i feel very poor

    • +1

lol was considering pulsar sss or veloster turbo at around 20k and with 200HP, now there both old and not selling.
Then see these 100k cars and feel poor like u :/

    • +9

If it's any consolation, most of the people who buy these overpriced cars can't afford them either. They just don't let that stop them…

      • +10

You can get one of these even if you're just on $50k a year, if you live with your parents and have no outgoings.

      • Massive generalisation

    • +10

Me too. I was just on another thread wondering if I should buy a torch for $1.27 :P

      • +1

Save 1c and that 100K becomes 1c cheaper!

      • +4

The thing is while you can probably buy that torch outright, it has the potential to rapidly depreciate in value.

If you organise a loan to buy an 80k car to park at work and impress your colleagues, you will always end up ahead.

Hope this helps you decide between a torch and a new car.
Feel free to + vote if you found this helpful

        • +2

If you get the car at a 1% loan, and the inflation is 2.5 you gain 1.5% on the car. The more expensive, the better.

        • +2

          @cameldownunder:
Great post, I think this covers ALL bases.
          Win Win

  • -7

Any Westpac investment analysts amongst the audience?

  • -2

I'm not completely sold on their reliability and ongoing costs tbh.

Why do you feel that ? I know there is a big downer on European cars on here but buying a new BMW would be perfectly fine.

Assuming you have access to a corporate program through work you’ll get free servicing for 4 years.

    • +2

I guess it is the first BMW ill own. I just hear from others they are not reliable and cost a lot to fix after that free period

      • That's why you sell it after

      • +5

A lot of that is just guessing by people who haven't owned Euro cars. They think because they car is 4X the price, the servicing and parts are 4X also. I've owned BMW's for over a decade now, all second hand around 10 years old. Buy a low km one with full service history, service them properly and they are reliable. Like all cars, avoid stealerships :)

        • +1

My brother just had to get a copy of a key, for the BMW he received from a friend: $350 expenses.

        • +2

@cameldownunder: Covered under a decent insurance policy. Check your PDS.

        • +2

          @imurgod:

And there it is, the tip of the day. Thanks imurgod, replacement key prices are ridiculous all over…

        • +3

@cameldownunder: just physical key or plus remote as well?
If it's key and remote, that's really cheap then. Key plus remote for my Toyota cost $500 from a dealership. I asked in one of those independent key cutting places, and haven't even found who can do them.

        • +1

@berry580: Remote as well. Cover for lost keys covers the key, coding, fob and the like.

        • +2

@ItsMeAgro: You ain't kidding. Had a client lose the keys to their Range Rover… thousands for a replacement.

        • +1

@berry580: Key & Remote. So he got away cheap ? Holy Poop.

        • +1

@cameldownunder: you should post this as a deal !!!

        • How low do you consider a low km Bimmer?

        • @EVA-01: As I'm mostly buying 10yo cars anything that has done 50k-70k would be low kms.

        • @cameldownunder: let's put it this way. He didn't get a great deal by an ozbargain standard. But compared to the price range that's observed in the market place (from experience and hear say), for a key set for a BMW car, the damage could have been a lot worse as demonstrated by imurgod

      • +5

By brother-in-law had a new 325i. A single piece of black plastic (or rubber) over one of the front doors was damaged. He paid $2600 to replace it. Some might consider that reasonable but in my Mazda world, that's insane.

      • Might not be much of an issue here, but the bad reputation derived from a powerful engine, back traction and wet / snowy condition.

Had a BMW in front of me while going skiing, he did really beautiful S on the road, from one side to the other. Till he had to stop. He then joined the cars stuck on the side of the road, while I passed him with my front traction Ford Galaxy.

    • +18

      Don't buy a BMtroubleU

      • haha i liked that

  • +1

Looking forward to bonus season already?

  • +1

Probably best to hit up a Bimmer forum…
If you wanna do it OZB style get a JB4, downpipe, airfilter and intercooler, chances are you'll be as fast or faster than a M2.

I wouldn't go back to BMW for maintenance unless you want to pay stupid prices. BMW use a digital service log for that model i believe so just service it wherever (BMW Specialist) and keep a copy of the receipts.

The biach is the RFT replacement costs

  • I know they have a reliability issue but if you’re getting new, you wont have many issues.

i personally buy land rovers but my friend buys BMWs every couple of years.

The problem is, most people buy used and its from owners who have just thrashed it.

Take care of your car and it will last.

I really like the M2 though the M1 does look tempting. I mean a rear wheel, 6 cylinder hatchback?

additionally, I’ve found some dealers in melbourne who were offering the M2 for under $80K new
unsure if it was last years stock but was a good deal

    • There were dealers sitting on under 80k? Down from the opening price of around 105?

    • -2

No way you can buy a new M2 for under $ 80K…

BMWs don’t have reliability issues if you look after them properly

      • -3

I have seen invoices for it.

I know someone who bought a BMW 4 series with M body kit for $72K

this was around April but it wasn’t shipped until August
Something dodgy but it was a BMW dealer and brand new

I don’t know how they got it but I’ve seen the invoice fully paid

        • +3

M body kit does not equate M. 420 for 70 odd is standard

        • -1

          @xbai:

I know but im saying the dealer that offered the M2 for under $80k also sold a $105k car for $72

    • +1

The 1M does not exist. It did, in previous generations, but not for years. It was never a hatch back, it was always a coupe. So whatever car you think you are talking about, it doesn’t exist.

      • -2

Sorry i was referring to the new M140i

        https://www.bmw.com.au/bmw-cars/m-performance/m140i-5-door

        • +5

          Not a 1M

        • -1

          @Burnertoasty:

          I know

Thats why i began with the word “Sorry”

I made a mistake. Anything else you want me to clarify?

        • @YLD1:
No Clarification required, however I think everyone will be happy if you can keep saying sorry.
          Cheers, hope this helps

  • +16

    previous bmw 325i owner here.

my thoughts are they drive really nice; sporty and direct
I've been fortunate enough to experience the 3 main German Luxury brands (BMW, Mercedes and Audi) in my family and I have to say reliability is rather average for a German car (which means it not very good and very expensive especially after 5 years)

    Just on my own 325i
-CD/DVD combo unit broke in its 3rd year (costed around $800 to fix)
-steering pump failed in its 5th year ($3000 to fix) but may have been normal replacement time
-interior trim bits like the door handle plastic started becoming sticky later on in my ownership. Pretty poor choice of materials imo
if you've ever owned an old logitech mouse with the rubber coating that goes sticky when its old - its kind of like that

if you drive a Japanese car right now I'd say you will be shocked 2 times:
1- How nice the car is and how refined they are compared to Japanese cars
2- How expensive it is to maintain and how unreliable some very simple things are

obviously my 325i was an older model and BMW have probably improved this stuff over the years but I can't say I'm particularly happy nor was it terrible either.

I think you should get the mustang though. V8s are a dying breed and it would be so nice to drive.

    • oh also I want to add my car was owned from new

    • I wouldn't get the Mustang…
      Read the reviews.
My mate waited ages for his delivery then from day one there were issues, even down to panel alignment!
He got sick and tired of it sitting at Ford he sold it after a few months

I think the quality of the Fseries chassis is better than previous generations.

      • you have a very fair point there. I'm just rosy eyed from that V8

      • I think most of those panel alignment issues are getting better, but granted there are some issues

      • What 'issues" did he have, appart from panel alignment?

Yes panel alignment isn't perfect, some worse than others and if you are super picky then maybe look for a different car. Appart from that they are pretty good vehicle, not many issues with them at all.

    • +4

1- How nice the car is and how refined they are compared to Japanese cars

@sock, I generally agree with your comment but the above statement is quite a generalisation. This may be true if you're comparing it to say a Honda, but are you seriously suggesting that a BMW is more refined than the equivalent Lexus model? I would argue the opposite is true, based on my experience.

      • +4

yeah you're right I should have made that distinction. I was comparing to an average Japanese car like the typical toyota, honda and nissan. Not necessarily Lexus and Infiniti; their fit and finish are great.

        • +2

They also usually come with much more standard equipment than the infamous option lists of the Europeans, and still manage to cost tens of thousands cheaper.

    • E90?

    • +10

I own an X5 before. Every year cost me $5000 to service. Stupid sh*t car.

    • +3

Hey, if you still have an issue with the sticky coating try going at it with isopropyl alcohol/rubbing alcohol. I used some isocol on a camera with rubberised coating that became sticky and it came right off. The plastic underneath is less aesthetically pleasing but would prefer that over grunginess any day.

  • mazda mx-5

  • +14

Looks like you want a pocket rocket. I would go an Audi RS3 instead for 20k cheaper.

    • +2

+1 to this and the 5 cyl in the rs3 sounds soooo god darn good

    • Nevermind please delete. Didnt see that RS3 had a sedan version too

    • +1

I don’t think the RS3 is any cheaper, but I’d still pick the RS3 over the M2

    • -1

The RS3 isn't that much cheaper and M2 has proven to be the better car across the board. I highly suggest looking at comparison reviews and you'll see the M2 wins in every comparison. The RS3 may be a better everyday car but the M2 is the better car overall.

You must be insane or an Audi fanboy to choose an RS3 over a M2

      • +1

This is true for the previous generation RS3, but the 2018 model has turned the tables. It’s seen as a better drivers car and it is obviously much faster.

        • I guess its the question of whether or not he's going to be using the car as a daily or not. The RS3 is the better daily but the M2 is the better weekend toy in my opinion. They're pretty evenly matched but I'd still take the M2 tho I'd hold out for the M2CS which is coming sometime next year which I think will smoke the RS3.

          https://salomondrin.com/video/2017-audi-rs3-vs-bmw-m2-which-…

FYI NOT a BMW fanboy. I also own an Audi A3 as well as a BMW 340i.

        • +2

@kylarstern: I wouldn't be taking car advice from Alejandro Salomin. Guy's just a trust fund baby who likes to pretend he works for a living.

          This is a better source.

      • +1

        I drive a Hyundai mate.

  • -3

Looks like you want a "look at me" car…

    • +9

More like a "look at me" car tends to look good. Hence it would look good to me too. Hence I want it

      • -2

If you have $100k to blow on a car for looks, go for it.

        • +15

I think people in their Hyundai Getz feel a bit butthurt at other people having nice cars.

I've got a Mustang and to be honest if there was one thing I could change about the car it would be the neck craning from random people. I'm a pretty self conscious person so I don't enjoy it at all. I bought the car because I like it and to enjoy it, not so people look at me. No need to be so harsh judging others just because they are into different things than you.

        • +1

          @JetLi:

Lol you are quite obviously being a smart ass, no need to pretend you aren't.

        • +2

@JetLi: why are you so butthurt?

        • -3

@walugi: Because I drive a Hyundai Getz bro, why does your butthurt?

        • +2

          @JetLi:

Don't be butthurt with your Getz mate they are a good car.

Will get you from A to B and then home again and you won't have to worry about any excitement in your drive, I also trust you have the beige colour just to ward off any attention you might have otherwise got in your getz.

        • @brad1601: I know, has a 4 star ANCAP safety rating too bro

        • +3

          @JetLi:

I think it got a couple of bonus stars for not actually being able to go speeds capable of causing harm lol
