    • Bad points, those more expensive versions are better in most if not all ways.

This iPhone is no better than a s8 which is hundreds of dollars cheaper.

      • +9

This iPhone is no better than a s8 which is hundreds of dollars cheaper.

Sorry, but that is such a subjective comment.
Regardless if you are Apple or Android, really its irrelevant. Different products have different values, and each person sees different values in each of the products.
We shouldn't assume one is better than the other because of price, or design, or any other factor as everyone weighs these values differently.

      • It doesn't have a stupid curved screen either. I would have got S8 if it was flat like the rumoured/leaked S9 is going back to.

      • As nizsmo said. Very subjective. Everyone has different tastes you cant say one is better than the other. Its best for you to go try the phone for yourself then to take others opinions and conform to them

    • 1c if you want an eye mask tonight…

  • +1

wow…iphone xmen will be around with 200gb every month and watch youtube all day.. aha

  • Anyone know if you can data share on these plans?

    • +2

yup, except the 200gb plan can only group a max number of like 5 I think it said.

  • The most important point is you are only LEASING the phone. You don't actually own it on this plan!!!

    • +6

Nope you can select OWN the phone for same.

  • +2

    Interesting plan.

200GB of monthly data but it would be nice if they bundled a 4G modem so that you can use the internet alongside with other devices.

  • +3

Iphone was somewhat expensive.. and is more expensive

  • +5

Lol such an interesting debate. Maybe saying "1.8k for a phone is stupid" sounds offensive. Ok i restate, "1.8k for a phone is stupid IMO". No offense intended.

  • +15

Personally I ordered one. A cheaper plan but, I don't disagree that the X is very expensive. However I've had alternative androids in the past and they are not as polished in my opinion. Lets just say ive been waiting 3 years to find a phone ive personally been interested in getting. No one can tell anyone else how to spend the money they earn. Especially when phones for some people are becoming increasingly important devices for their everyday life.

    • +8

      Another high yield return investment?

    • +2

I had Galaxy Note 1, 2, 4 & 8. They were most polished than the rest at the time - based on value per function. Eg. Stylus, expandable memory/SD card, replaceable battery, best screen SAMOLED & size, IR remote, NFC, Oxygen/UV/… Sensors, split screen, S-Health tracking, Samsung Pay, free paid apps/content/accessories…
      Different expectations create different perceptions.

      • +3

I can’t deny the physical aspects, my problem lies with the software. Whilst some people like yourself love the customisation of android, i personally find it leaves too many variables in coding to be polished. Apple just suits my needs better and why wouldn’t i want the best possible phone available from them at the time.

You’re right though. What I expect and want is different to yours and that’s why i’m glad there is a competitive marketplace offering different products.

        • Well said guys.

    • +1

I tend to agree. I went and bought a Galaxy S8 Plus because I thought this was the best Android available but it's just doesn't give the same user experience that an iPhone provides. Android in general is just too lethargic at most times. Even the apps you can feel is a notch lower developed compared to the iPhone versions.

I'll still hold out though and not get a new phone for a while until my S8 becomes unbearable.

  • +2

When do you internet learn that any discussion pertaining iPhone will escalate quickly… sigh

  • +3

Regardless of whether iPhone X's pricing is ridiculous for us commoners or whether it is too luxurious for a student, the deal itself is decent for $149 per month IF you really need 200GB data, unlimited calls, text and unlimited international call to certain countries.

For someone who travels internationally frequently the 1.5GB international roaming data is a godsend.

    • Not too luxury for some students especially you find those Lamborghini parked in the uni campus.

  • +15

Some perspective for those a little concerned with price. My ordered plan works out to be $4 a day. My phone is on and around me almost 24/7. Others choose buy a coffee a day for more or less the same price. I just don't drink coffee.

  • +1

I'd like to know how the mobile network will handle the trend to these stupidly high data caps? It's gonna be like Vodafone's initial foray into 3G.

  • -8

Is it really "revolutionary" as Apple claim it to be? That's the real question…

Simple way to put it, you're basically a sheep jumping on the bandwagon every year and paying for the logo and the customer service/warranty that it comes with and couldn't care less about the internals. People see a new model come out with a bigger screen and upgraded camera and think it's "innovative" and upgrade from the previous model that was just 6 months old and does the same thing 😂

My 128GB OnePlus 5 cost me $699 and would still blow the X out of the water anyday. Better camera, battery and more ram, Bluetooth 5.0 and many more features. It may be behind with its FHD 1080P display but it's still half the cost and does just as much as the X.

X has no selling point, all they did was add a glass back (iPhone 4 style, again going backwards instead of forward), added support for a qi wireless charger (which you have to purchase separately), augmented reality support (nothing but a gimmick just like Siri turned out to be, and still years behind - Google Tango stepped into the AR game first and bigger internal memory. Oh, and don't forget the 8 and X use a Samsung display so all you Samsung haters are hypocrites :D

    It lacks:

    • True edge-to-edge display (hats off to Samsung, LG, Sharp, Essential Phone and Xiaomi for providing true edge-to-edge and cheaper phones with more value for money) Even the Note 8 has a better resolution at 2960 x 1440 521ppi as opposed to the X which is 2436×1125 458 ppi
    • Expandable memory
    • Open OS (seriously, nobody wants to wait 1 year for a jailbreak just to get rid of annoying features Apple force you to use)
    • Headphone jack
    • Fingerprint reader
      & too many more features…

You could even get a used retina MacBook Pro that is cheaper and more useful than this phone. It's just hard to justify spending $1800 on a mobile, and one that will become old and /last year's model/ after the next iPhone gets released. A true ozbargainer who wants value for money would avoid Apple products altogether, at the end of the day it's all made in China and you're paying triple for something that a $600 phone could do.

    • +1

I understand what you are saying, and I seriously considered going down the Xiaomi phone route for this phone, but I've just put an order in for an iPhone X. This is why:

When I use my macbook, all my messages and phone calls are routed through the computer. I can also see where people are on find my friends from the laptop. It's an incredibly useful feature and I use it every day. That alone is enough to lock me into the Apple infrastructure.

The ease of repairs/replacement is the other big feature. Phone breaks- take it into Apple store, get a new phone within 5 minutes, then have all my apps, photos, contacts automatically install on the new phone while im in the store. I break the phone? No probs, take it in, new screen or new phone for free or about $200 within 5 minutes. Had it happen free twice, paid once.

The iphone X is essentially a match for the Samsung S8, but the S8 can't match those two killer features. Also, you don't want to be the one loser with a green bubble.

      • +1

Apple support, get a new phone within 5 minutes - That has not been my experience. I had to book an appointment and on the day of the appointment, I had to wait for a while to get a customer rep to assist me. Then, she had to assess and do some checks, and wait a bit further to get a refurbished phone and some paperwork.

The issue I have is that the refurbished phone comes with the latest firmware, which really slows the phone down (the refurbished phone is slow, I might as well call it iWait). Phone restore to 100% - please, give me a break. Apple removed some of the apps I bought. They did not even offer to restore anything for me.

You use your laptop to find your friends? How about the features Android have that are not available on iPhone? The iPhone X screen is made by Samsung. The flash storage, there is a good chance it is made by Samsung as well.

I have a Macbook Pro. It does feel like dongle book. iPhone, honestly, I like iPhone 6S/6S+ hardware wise. It is the last iPhone before Apple started to take things away (earphone jack, proper physical home button, and now the removal of it). Apple have been very inconsistent. Earphone jack is still on Macbook Pros (isn't earphone jack bad??). Upcoming iMac Pros will still have USB-A ports and memory card reader (so why removed them from Macbook "Pros"). One of the things people really liked about the old Macbook Pros is Apple was generous on the ports (not like some PC makers trying to cut corners, but now….).

For the past 2 years, Apple have been removing features people like/loved (magsafe from Macbook, home button).

iOS, it used to be really good. Now, the OS basically have a lot of junk animation effects and phones after upgrading to 2 major iOS releases have obvious slow down. I went to Apple store to try out iPhone 6S+ on iOS 11. As I expected, it used to be really smooth on iOS 9 and iOS 10. iOS 11, opening basic apps start to slow down. Honestly, 6S+ is a good phone, but iOS 11 makes it feel second rated.

Xiaomi phones - well that's cheap alternative. Get a decent Android. Xiaomi tried to copy Apple iOS and they also copied Apple's approach of slow down your old phones with newer OSes and introduce more bugs. Their older Android based OSes used to be good, new ones are just rubbish.

      • +1

Not sure you checked the new prices for screen repair (which are a complete ripoff!)

Australia: $419 for screen repairs, $819 for other damage (i.e. back glass) if you don't have AppleCare (even then it is not free).

    • -1

If people wanted these 'features' they'd get an android device.
People mock apple and say they don't innovate but they can certainly move a whole industry forward.
Headphone jacks are dying even if you're not willing to admit it, Fingerprint reader is being replaced by something even greater.

Even sadder is that iPhone's still out perform most androids.

      • +1

Removing earphone jack is fine, but put another lightning port on the iPhone. However, why keep it on Macbook Pros if earphone jacks are so bad and dying? Same goes for USB-C ports. If that's the future, why still have normal USB-A ports on iMac? Same goes for memory card reader. Just inconsistent. Apple are not releasing USB-C devices (even their charger cable for USB-C is USB 2.0).

Apple have not truly innovate lately. Touch ID, they copied and fine tuned it. But they stopped after 2 iterations and now replacing it by Face ID. What Apple did to move industry "forward"… no more removable battery on phones, home button pretty much gone (Samsung decided to keep it up until S7), removal of earphone jack (without adding a replacement port, but instead forcing you to share with another port).

As for iOS being faster. That used to be the case in every aspect, but iOS 7 onwards changed it. Some apps might run faster, but the OS itself isn't. Have an iPhone and Android phone side by side, just open a folder with apps and then close that folder, then move on to another folder and close it. Sure, the iOS animation is fancy, but the animation takes time which isn't really beneficial.

I'm sure I will get neg like crazy for my comment.

It's a matter of time before I have to replace my current iPhone with a newer one. However, I really don't like the direction Apple is heading. Neither iPhone 8 nor iPhone X excites me.

        • If Galaxy phones can have earphone jack which is superior for sound/choice, why is it good to remove (looks over functionality).
Touch ID is standard & iris/face optional in Galaxy S8/Note. Face ID is still untested in real life & there's no other option if it doesn't function, eg. unlock the phone under a table or in crowded space.
Faster iPhone benchmark has no real life advantages, particularly with less RAM when you have more active apps in memory. All new flagships are smooth now.

    • +3

jumping on the bandwagon every year

And can you explain why you bought a phone that is literally also the same as its predecessor?

It may be behind with its FHD 1080P display

      Does Apple blame your eyes?

all you Samsung haters are hypocrites

People hate Samsung for their bloat, not their hardware.

It's just hard to justify spending $1800 on a mobile

      Then don't.

at the end of the day it's all made in China

      Anything wrong with this?

you're paying triple for something that a $600 phone could do

      A longer update lifespan?

    • +2

customer service/warranty that it comes with and couldn't care less about the internals.

Lol I'd say buying a phone for better customer service is extremely justified, considering how much they cost. Why should people have to give two shits about the internals, as long as the phone does what they want? The A11 SoC is pretty incredible anyway, so yeah.

      6 months old

That is total crap, they're released yearly.

would still blow the X out of the water anyday

      Nope.

      Better camera

The OP5 camera is pretty mediocre. The iPhone 8's is much better and yet you're already claiming that your OP5 has a better camera than the X, which isn't even out yet…

      battery

The phone is not out yet, so there's absolutely no way for you to know this.

      more ram

      Whoopee.

      Bluetooth 5.0

      Kinda like the iPhone.

augmented reality support (nothing but a gimmick just like Siri turned out to be, and still years behind - Google Tango stepped into the AR game first

The AR in iOS looks pretty great in the demos, tell me exactly how it's 'years behind'?

so all you Samsung haters are hypocrites

Most phones use Samsung displays, does that mean no one is allowed to hate Samsung phones? What kind of logic is that.

      True edge-to-edge display

The iPhone X has equally tiny bezels on all sides (plus the notch). It's a different design tactic, one that I think looks quite nice.

      Expandable memory

      Neither does your precious OP5.

I don't own an iPhone (I quite enjoy my S8+), nor do I particularly enjoy using them, but man, the blatant Apple bashing is getting old. The phone is not even out yet and people are already listing all their criticisms. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

      • +1

Apple do have better customer service. However, if you get your warranty service done close to 2 years or after 2 years, the refurbished phone will feel sluggish due to the iOS being upgraded to the latest version which is no longer optimised for it.

A11 is the fastest CPU at the moment. The issue is that there are bits of iOS which don't make sense (basically, the animation when you open / close folders, opening apps / closing apps - pretty, but waste of time). Android, on inferior CPU, and much simpler animation, can do those basic things faster). A9 feels sluggish on iOS 11 - and I am pretty sure it is a software issue, not hardware.

Apple have always been very good at marketing. When other companies put fingerprint reader in their devices, it is pretty much gimmick, but when Apple did it, it is innovation. Then, Apple stopped improving it after 2 iterations. It make sense now because Face ID is Apple's future direction. So, is Touch ID basically a stop gap solution?

AR - Google started working on it first, but Google never really managed to sell it to the public. Apple managed to wow people with their AR demo.

Google still have a lot of work to do on Android. While the OS has improved in terms of responsiveness, Chrome is still not good enough (in terms of smoothness and speed). Camera app is also one area that needs improvement. When an Android device has dual pixel auto focus, and good OIS, it shouldn't be let down by encoding issue. Browser and camera apps are two most used apps for most people. Google still not able to get Chrome working smoothly on mobile phones is disappointing.

    Samsung fanboys vs Apple fanboys.

Can’t we just appreciate the data?

  • -6

How do you know iphone x is all made in china? is the OLED display 、 3-D camera 、batteries made in china? If you want cheaper stuff and $600 phone! You deserve the full room chinese product!

  • +3

    Got a mi mix2 intead

  • I wish this plan was available on a different phone, can't find it on any of the Android phones.

  • +2

How is this a deal? There are times when plans are better value but this…? Is it the data? International roaming?

  • +6

The irony, a student that can afford an iPhone X….. bet it's the same students that complain they don't have money for food, books, transport etc………

    • +4

I think you forget about international students?!

    • Student could be a software developer?

  • Its good if you want to replace your home broadband with a bit more flexibility.

  • Just worth noting Rainchecks are within 3 weeks of receiving the phone, Backorder means it is undetermined when there will be stock.

  • +5

Waiting for optus family and friends 25% off deal.

    • Same.

    • Me tooo…. But, one thing I hate about Optus is, I commute to the City (Sydney) from western suburbs for 45 minutes. And the coverage is pretty patchy. Very disappointed. Yet, will go for it as it would cover my Premier league spend as well.

  • -6

    200Gb!! Wow.
Too bad their 4G only goes about 3mbps/0.1mbps in my area with 3bars of signal.
Have spoke to them many times, they won't fix.
Last time they charged me $20 late fee because there was $8 overdue that I didn't know about.
    No Deal!

    • A whole new world

      • -1

        more like old world.
TPG decided ADSL wasn't serviceable cause the line so bad.
only connection i got now is wifi no thanks to NBN.
        still living in the y2k

    • +2

This is not a legitimate reason to neg a deal.

    • I get 15Mbps/4Mbbs consistently with optus where I live.

      • +1

lucky u, i get 76/16 with optus in the city.
but i think they're not allocating enough bandwidth in my area.
so speed is really poor with good signal.
        neg, due to poor service.

  • +5

I hoped we'd moved past the "sheeple buy Apple" trolling on what is, after all, not an Android-or-whatever-platform evangelism forum — but I guess not.

Seriously, neither iOS nor Android phone buyers need that kind of earnest thread crapping from the "other" camp. It's so irrelevant.

    • Cool words bro

    • +1

While I have completely changed my opinion of apple over the last couple years, the majority of Apple & Samsung owners are sheep.

  • This is clearly designed to cover most peoples usage as a home broadband replacement and an option manh could consider!. Optus isn't the fastest but my 3G unlimited gets generally solid 7Mbps average with a drop to maybe 1.5Mbps in a far reaching country area during peak but 12Mbps in Melb or Sydney metro. Works fine.

  • call me dumb whatever u want, but i just ordered this plan with the uni student discount. i work for 15 hours a week at Hungry Jacks and during uni holidays i work around 30. so i can definately pay that plan off easily a month and still be left with a lot of money in the bank. cant wait for my iphone X :))

    • fyi im 18 i earn around 16 a hour (part time so no casual loading)

    • +1

If you have "a lot of money in the bank", why not just buy the phone outright if you are most likely not going to use the 200GB?

      • -3

        cause of the student discount

        • Even without the student discount, if you aren't using up all the data or using it to replace your home wifi buying the phone outright is cheaper.

        • +1

@Cal13x: Zfan will probably appreciate not having to worry about data allowances anymore.

Additionally, Optus is likely to secure people their Iphones faster than outright buyers.
These phones are going to be undersupplied for 6 months+ and all the scalpers will be buying all the outrights.

    • I still haven't received a promo code in my edu e-mail.

  • +4

don't know why everyone is so worried bout other ppl finances, at the end of the day its their money not urs.

  • Wow a 200gb cap!!!

  • Is there a way to use the 200GB both on my phone and at home as wireless broadband? Like connecting a seperate sim?

    • +1

I dont know if Optus has a thing but Vodafone has family sharing data. Would need another sim and maybe on a plan, but its the closest thing i know of.

    • +4

Yes you can. Either hotspot the phone or you can get a mobile broadband sim and connect it to a pocket wifi or mobile home wireless broadband modem and share the data.

      See below links.

      Data sim only -

      http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/mobile-broadband/data…

With modem and data sim -

      http://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/mobilebroadband?SID=c…

      • So will the mobile broadband sim connect to the same plan? I want to be able to use my phone and home wifi separately and simultaneously

        • +1

Your mobile broadband data sim plan which starts from $15 and this $149 plan can share the total data.

You can have the mobile broadband data sim connected to a mobile broadband wifi modem at home and at the same time use your phone data else where at the same time.

        • .. so long as the sims are on the same account, the data will share.

        • @yojabbajabba:

Is there a cheaper option than $15/month?
Do they have a secret cheaper plan? Maybe a $10/month for 500mb? If you have 200GB, you hardly care about the additional 3GB.

  • I’m holding off on the iPhone x. Apparently blackberry are gonna make a huge comeback soon

    • similar to a nissan gtr vs porsche 911 discussion lol.

  • +1

Personally would rather we all boycott the iphone X and send a message to Apple we dont like their pricing. Wouldn't buy because i dont see the value in its ultra premium price even though i could easily afford.

    • +1

      Yeah that’ll show them.

  • This is a brilliant deal without even taking the phone into account. I know plenty of people stuck with lackluster NBN or ADSL2 services that pay roughly or close to this for mobile data that could replace their Internet connection completely with this. I use on average about 100GB a month, if you're solo and can't get a decent wired connection this would be king.

  • Hi Op,

i have already 12 months data only contract with optus under business contract and no longer student.

can i grab this iphone deal so $135 a month? and get 10percent discount.

    thanks

    • If you are no longer a uni student and you dont have a uni email, you may not be able to get the uni discounts.

Best is to go online and chat to an optus agent or visit a store to confirm

  • if you had to pay $3.50 more per day vs an ordinary android phone on a cheaper plan

That's $1300 more per year.. and say over 40 years if you get a a new iPhone every second year that's

$32,500 more. We are gonna ignore the interest repayments you can save on a home loan if you paid off $100 more each month. $32K can easily buy you a nice new car.

I believe Steve jobs would be rolling in his grave laughing at anyone willing to buy the iPhone X.

    • But nowdays we use “money” not “ gold” to exchange. The value of money is highly flexible, actually stop spending will get faster “money” devaluation.

  • +2

Look at what you get for $149 (assuming no student discount)

200gb and you get free, unlimited SD netflix/stan streaming ~ that can replace the nbn for 99% and its FASTER than FTTN/NBN, so factor that in!
Next free roaming. Thats $5 or $10 a day extra charge thats now a thing of the past, so take a holiday and take your phone!
Next while on holidays, use 1.5gb and if you use it carefully (with local wifi hotspots) thats another bill thats now a thing of the past.
12 month new phone and plan update too for $99 one off charge too

Now use it anywhere, data to share and mobile tv…. on the go

the maths is about the same as NBN+MB SIM ONLY

The iPhoneX is just plan candy… BTW with 4K/60fps get the 256gb please as anything less is just dumb!

Im on Telstra, 60gb and use a Note8 ~ this is a awesome game changing deal
