  • Do any of the xiaomi phones compete hardware wise with the oneplus3 or even 5? Or galaxy s7 etc

    • +6

I have a Mi5. It's pretty comparable to oneplus3 or s7 albeit with some compromise (no b28). The Mi6/MiNote2/MiNote3/Mix/Mix2 are up there with s8 or oneplus5.
The Redmi models are their budget line, not comparable to above flagships, but very good value.

    • compare the specs

    • Mi 6

    • Very good value for money. I have been looking around for phones within this price range and have not found any better than Redmi Note 4 specs. One of my mate uses it and I am pretty impressed with its performance. Especially the battery life which can easily get you 2 days of normal use.

    • yeah, you just gotta make sure your looking at the right ones. mi6/miNote2/Mix1/Mix2(myfavourite).

      Hijacking to share a post:

How to install LineageOS and do Google Camera mod [coming soon]

For those who are interested in installing close to stock Android on this phone and installing the Google Camera mod to improve the camera, here's a post I made which I will be expanding on shortly.

I've so far installed LineageOS, rooted it, and have yet to attempt the Google Camera mod but will be doing so shortly!

      • Thanks, when you installed Lineage, did you get USB transfer back? Or is it still charge only?

  • Does this has QC support?

    • +1

No QC, no NFC (and therefore no android pay)

    • Sadly no QC, but 4100 mah battery is a beast.

  • +3

I have a version with 3GB RAM and 16GB storage. A great phone otherwise, but the 16GB is just not enough and the camera quality is far from the best. Mind you other camera apps do make better use of the sensor, instead of horribly underexposing all photos like the native camera does. But the fingerprint sensor is good and battery life is amazing compared to my bootlooped LG G4. I don't think it supports QC, at least does not indicate it in anyway when connected to a QC charger. Anyway excellent mobile for the price, especially if you are not too concerned about camera quality.

@jakentta… you have the Note 4X? This post is for the Note 4.
      We have 2 Note 4X's (3gb/16gb)..
16GB is very adequate for us but you can shove in a micro sd if you want more space or just buy a 32/64gb one in the first place LOL. Cannot fault MIUI interface but rom people change them anyway.
Cameras on both are exceptional under all conditions, contrary to what some may say. One has SS and other has OMV sensor.
Running 2 sims on one phone, the second sim has to be a nano sim and only operates on 3g. Works fine.
GPS locks on fast and is accurate as a phone can get.

The Note 4x could have come with one of 3 sensors, I think Sony looks the best. Some comparison shots

You can check your sensor by opening the dialer, type
        *#*#64663#*#*
then under Version Information see what is listed for Back Camera.
imx258 is Sony, s5k3l8 is Samsung, ov13855 is Omnivision

I have a 4X 3GB/32GB with an OMV sensor, it's not too bad (especially for a phone that cost $169)

      • +1

Well it says Redmi Note 4 under the model number in About Phone, so not really sure whether it is X or not. Camera module is the ov13855 Omnivision anyway. It is capable of decent photos, but it just seems to me that the native camera app is not taking full advantage of it. The SD card also does not really help as the operating system does not seem to allow apps to be installed or transferred to SD card. Yes you can possibly install a different ROM etc, but I think the average user would not want to do that and therefore they'd find the 16GB rather limiting even with just a few apps.

    • Agree with you on the 16GB storage. 16GB is nowhere near enough and if you want a true dual SIM phone at 16GB, avoid this because you'll be using the second SIM slot for expandable storage.

At $145 for the 3GB/16GB version, it represents incredible value. The phone feels and looks incredibly sleek for such a cheap phone, and it runs pretty smooth (although I rooted mine and installed LineageOS - didn't use it on MIUI for long)

I'm not big on camera so I haven't cared enough or noticed much of a difference, but I am aware of the negative rep that the phone cameras. I will be attempting to do the camera mod shortly.

  • My Redmi Note 3 has been great for the past 2 years. But
    - it's got adware/bloatware pre-installed and I've never figured out how to get rid of it
    - no band 28 (i had no issues on Optus but not Telstra is struggling)
    - camera is poor

    • You must have a hacked ROM from the seller. A lot of sellers put in an unofficial hacked ROM with ads. You can get the official one from the Xiaomi.

Recently, I removed the official Xiaomi ROM on mine and installed an AOSP like rom. Seems to run smoother. It has a little bit more free memory.

    I still don't understand the differences between Note 4 v 4X

    • +2

Yes the 4 and 4X are confusing. But basically officially, the 4s are with MediaTek Soc, whereas the 4Xs are with SnapDragon 625 Soc. You will want to have the SD625 ones, which is the 4X. Much better energy consumption, meaning longer usage time out of one charge, and much less chance of getting heated up.

Between these two models, there are mix and match RAM and ROM amounts. Pick one that suits you.

      • +2

Not true.. this deal is for a 4 with SD625

  • Deciding this or the a1. Can you run google photos / google play on the stock os?

    • Yes it can, plus there seems to be plans to port A1 ROM to Redmi Note 4 if that helps you to decide.

      https://www.androidauthority.com/xiaomi-android-one-rom-redm…

A1 has “more” cameras, Note 4 has “more” battery.

    • You can unlock the bootloader and then fastboot flash the official global rom, comes with all google stuff.

  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 can be updated to Android Nougat 7.0 ? This is one of the good phones for value of Money.

    • Yes, but since it runs on MIUI, it does not carry all Nougat features (eg. multiwindow, double tap to switch apps), but it is on horizon under MIUI 9 as i read.

    • MIUI 9 (the official Xiaomi ROM) is based on Nougat. It is currently in development mode (sort of Beta mode). Very close to stable release.

  • how is this one different can anyone explain
