Why are we celebrating this shit? It's an American holiday, not an Australian one.

    • +3

      It's an American holiday

I wasn't aware they took a holiday that day.

      • -1

        I missed you <3 <3

        • +4

it's ok, keep practicing and I'm sure your aim will get better.

        • @gizmomelb: Well that seems unneccesary, AnneThorpe

        • @Putnum: Anne Thorpe? More like Helen Keller with missing the dinoaur era joke / punchline.

          TLDR: ba-dum tish! Millenial: huh?

        • +1

@gizmomelb: Oh boy you tried to figure out who Anne Thorpe was? I was speaking to the person that upvoted your comment ;)

          awkward

        • @Putnum: :) I was mentally hearing Grunkle Stan telling that joke.

    • A bargain's a bargain, just eat the junkfood yourself.

Because some people find it fun, sorry if that offends you grouch

Both my kids are under 6 and they don't care if its an American holiday or not, they have great fun dressing up and going trick or treating.

      • -1

they have great fun dressing up and going trick or treating.

normal kids would just stay home and play with their ipads.

        • +2

yeah I've noticed the unmarked white vans now have signs on the side saying 'free wifi' instead of 'free candy'

      • +1

I'm curious how much candy/chocolate/whatever they actually accumulate considering most houses wouldn't prepare for it.

        • you obviously don't live in the suburbs where there are lots of kids.. you see parents with packs of kids going door to door and the number of houses who weren't prepared over the past 3 years we've been trick or treating… I could them all on one hand.

For those who don't want to partake the de facto has been to stick a notice up on your mailbox or door and the kids don't bother you then.

        • considering most houses wouldn't prepare for it.

Some neighbourhoods get together and do it.

Also, more and more local shopping strips are joining in…

        • @jv: oh yes, it's definitely a favourite celebration for retailers, possibly ranking up there with Valentine's Day.

        • @gizmomelb:

definitely a favourite celebration for retailers

our locals ones give away free lollies

        • @jv: that's impressive.. I can never convince my offspring to graba free banana or apple when we're at a supermarket which offers them.. I'd have to hold them back with free lollies.

        • @gizmomelb:

          same…

    • actually not just an American holiday.. most of Europe also celebrate but call it other names.

it has gained popularity here in Australia due to the large number of American Kid's TV shows, so the kids have grown up seeing it on TV and so want to do the same - ie: collect lollies and chocolates and dress up in scary costumes.

      • but call it other names.

        such as?

        • +1

          @gizmomelb: That's just lazy.

        • +1

@potplanty: exactly my thought on the query for other names. This is not kindergarten, I'm not going to spoon feed you information or wipe your butt. If you can post in a forum you should know how to search for things yourself.

TLDR: grow up and learn how to research

        • @gizmomelb:

not just an American holiday.. most of Europe also celebrate but call it other names.

          then

you should know how to search for things yourself.

          hmmmm…

        • +1

@jv: if you're on the net then no need to ask simple questions in a forum when the answer is but a search away.

being called lazy though is a case of potplanty calling the kettle black

        • @gizmomelb:

Then why even mention about the 'other names' ?

Are you just trying to tease us?

        • +1

@jv: no, but I do place value on individuals who can think for themselves.

    • Did you mean originally the Celts?

      You also forgot:
      Mexico
      China
      Hong Kong
      Japan
      Philippines
      Singapore
      Bosnia + Herzegovina
      Germany
      Ireland
      Italy
      Romania
      Russia
      Switzerland
      England
      Scotland
      Canada
      Saint Helena
      Dubai
      Dominican Republic

      • So…not Aus is what you're trying to say?

Share packs are half price across cadbury and nestle in woolies this week - about $2.50 each. Do the kids a favour and grab 10 of them - this isnt worth $15 let alone $25….

    • +1

      Then imagine paying $45.

Seeing all the comments saying it's cool that Halloween is on it's way over to Australia, can't say I care either way, I'm just here to say that if you knock on my door, I ain't giving you any of my candy, for free anyway. If you wanna buy some I'll cut you a good rate.

    • So go trick or treating early, then go home and sell your collected lollies to later trick or treaters. Nah, smacks too much of reselling baby formula in my books.

      • My thinking is, if I've gone out of my way to procure myself some candy, I would not share it with some rando knocking at my door.

If I had to interact with strangers to get my candy, I definitely wouldn't share it with randos, I worked hard for that damn candy.

  • I couldn't care less about Halloween but it does give customers a chance to get cheap chocs/lollies and costumes (went to a murder mystery party and made use of the stuff available now. Will get some stuff for another event next month, neither Halloween related).

Unfortunately by OzB standards this one isn't really a great value deal for people with access to a major supermarket.
