  • Cheaper ($248.00) if you dont want the Dlink power kit

    what is this?

    • its something like a networked media player, i think u may have to pay for the content. IMO ppl may be better off with a HTPC…

more info on that boxee here http://www.dlink.com/boxee/more.html

      • +1

unless u have the content locally u can stream it over the network, you can install boxee and try it but it's basically a small htpc……..with boxee installed as the os

        • might drop in price when the google tv comes out.

  • Nice deal… though I haven't quite decided on whether to get a Boxee or not.

  • The remote looks pretty impressive - Compare it other streamers like the PCH its still priced competively - Im looking forward to it arriving.

    • yer I would want to know what you can view on it. as in oz we are very limited with online stuff.

      • It looks like you can download Boxee for your PC, and then you could use that to check what content is available.

  • Waiting for reviews; but looks pretty good so far - need something for the bedroom.

    • remember it has no storage sou have to use a usb or network storage

  • Why is this better than whats out there , personally this doesnt do anything better than apple tv or devices that are out there already

Plus this is D link , not the best brand in the world to be charging these sort of prices then lets look at the experience and devices they have out there already , wait there is nothing good , so this device was built on what they learnt from previous devices hmmm.

Sounds like and expensive piece of furniture to me !

Noontec V8 Pro & The Seagate Freeagent Theatre+, either pretty much do the same but are less than half the price.

    • because u like boxee more? also boxee can have apps, for example revision 3 have their own app where you can watch all your shows and boxee also has a browser with flash so you can pull content from any site.

EDIT: also hardly half price its only $74 cheaper than boxee is.

      • Sounds very general although interesting , so an app you can watch all your shows ? pull content from any site?

Sorry sounds a bit like a market spiel with little evidence, intrigued yes , sold no!

        • it's not market spiel (i never trust that shit either), you download the desktop boxee app if you would like and try it for yourself.

          http://www.boxee.tv/

EDIT: at the moment getting shows doesn't work properly if at all in aus but maybe if the future it will but you can still have a look at whats available. I think if boxee box does well in aus there will be more of a push for more content in aus but it doesn't stop you from using local copies of video's.

      • Reply to your edit , the Seagate was available for 63.00 @ HT

        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/32718

By my calculations it makes it $236.00 cheaper than the Boxee

Ps stop stealth editing your posts, makes the reply seem to not answer your question , get it

  • Thanks for the link kv0nza!

    • np, i just found out in setting if you change your location to aus it hides everything we cant access.

      • how much is that , like 50% of the stuff ?

        • no still pretty much the same, but i use local content not streaming so i wouldnt know

  • We've been in discussion with Dlink and it is only the big 3 retailers who will have it prior to Christmas. Anyone who is advertising it for lower than RRP is likely going to leave you without your product until after the holidays. Do not buy this product from someone unless they can offer you a guaranteed release date.

Boxee is pretty sweet and this is a great deal from DSE.

    • thanks for that didn't know it was exclusive till after holidays, will probably buy the dse deal

  • The only way i can see this being of benefit is you like to pay for your online content , am i wrong ?

    • The best way to answer your questions about Boxee is to just download it and try it on your pc/mac. The hardware will be pretty sweet and its such a simple system to use. Try it out!

Dlink have told me they are going to be releasing some great Australian content but are tight lipped about the whole thing. Content should be free like USA.

Pay by AMEX and use the Promo Code 'amexdeal' to get a further $20 off. It worked for me.

See the following link for more details: http://www.americanexpress.com/australia/personal/cards/rewa…

    • Nice! Thankfully I was waiting for someone like Officeworks to pricematch the bonus deal, but another $20 is enough to seal the deal.

Not sure if it actually checks for AMEX payment, I applied the code before submitting payment details. Unless someone actually goes through and checks all the orders that used this code. Regardless, I did pay by AMEX anyway!

    • Paid by Amex yesterday, see this post today. :( Despite the 'My Account' section having a 'Cancel Order' link, it doesn't actually give you any way of cancelling the order (so I can reorder using the code). Ah well, with the Everyday Rewards points plus the current triple bonus points from Amex, I'll be getting ~1100 FF points…

      • DSE cancelled my order after a quick email, so I've reordered but this time applying the 'amexdeal' code. :)

  • If you already have a PS3 or Xbox 360, you have little or no reason to buy this.

Much better option to invest in a HTPC.

    • +1

I have a 360 but don't use it as a media centre - not until it can play more formats natively (i.e. I don't want to transcode or convert format). Not to mention, it's loud! :)

I explored the HTPC route, but when adding up the costs I would be spending 2-3 times what the boxee costs.

The boxee box seems like a decent alternative at it's price point (yes, a little pricey, but it'll come down and early adopters always pay a premium). I don't have a huge need for the Powerline bonus, so take off whatever I can get for that on ebay and I'm happy with the price.

edit: and as a gadget freak, the remote looks freaking cool! =D

  • Looks like we may receive pre-orders earlier than 17/10. Just received an email from Boxee stating the following:

"Boxee Boxes start shipping Nov 10th worldwide; order yours now!"

According to the email, Nov 10 will be a worldwide release.

  • Doesn't a patched Apple TV with Boxee installed do just as much? I'd rather do that instead and at a lower cost.

  • I went to OFficeWorks Glen Waverley just now and asked the staff there about pre-ordering Boxee. There's no bonus from Officeworks at the moment and they can only do price match. Since DSE and Officeworks are setting the same price for the Boxee unit except for the freebie, he agreed that DSE is a better place to pre-order.

I'm still waiting for last minute changes by Harvey N and Officeworks to match DSE offer before putting in my order before Sunday.

This box is something I waited for 1.5 years. Other solutions are just not as good and costs more.
    - consolidate local medias with rich interface and metadata
    - low electricity consumption (I believe so)
    - small footprint
    - 1080p capable
    - below $300 price range

    • the only thing it apparently does is consolidate local media? and i beleive thats a software feature thats free already, plenty out there that do the rest under 100.00

      • i already have a wd tv but i am still going to buy a boxee because it's so much better, and i might buy another one later on because im sure someone will hack it to use as a small webserver ;)

      • Do expect online media too but we won't know what is available in Australia until later. There are too many media players in the market, however if you go to their forums, you will learn what is lacking in one and the other. I'm not saying Boxee Box is perfect and the only way you can see what Boxee has to offer is by downloading and trying the free Boxee software on your computer. If you like it, Boxee Box is for you otherwise stay away from it.

Of course you can put a desktop/notebook/htpc in the living room with the free Boxee but those are too much for me. All I want is a simple device that runs Boxee software. I don't think there are many 1080p capable media players out there at that price.

Since it is open-source too, it is just waiting for people to develop some interesting apps to run on it.

  • Just imaging the marketing person at Dlink , Manager says to marketing person "okay we have this e box type device what do we call it" umm
