Short in My Cabling from Junction Box to Modem

Hey Guys,

So this year we purchased a property and to my displeasure have been dealing with some terrible internet speeds on ADSL2+ as no NBN or even cable here. Every speed test I have done over the past 6 months has been short of 5Mbps (625kb/s). This makes downloading game updates and watching any video terribly slow and in what sometimes seem to be in ultra mega HD 16x16 pixel…. Let alone if anyone else where to whisper internet usage.

I have made several calls to my provider and they have followed up with some testing and such, saying that it is because I am 1.8km away and this is part of the reason for the slow speeds. However they can not tell me what else may be the issue if anything at all. They did have a contractor come out and test the line, he was a little hard to understand but seemed to think there may be a short in the cabling from the box attached to the house (junction box I thought?) to the connection inside at the modem. He said he tried a few different lines but it all seemed to be the cabling inside the house.

Now not that I think he is wrong, but just wondering has anyone dealt with this kind of issue before? What kind of speed drops could I be seeing due to this issue? If large I will try to arrange ASAP for some new works to be carried out but I don't think it would be a huge amount. When dling from a stable source the line seems to hold a fairly flat speed, not jumping up and down too much. Wouldn't a short be bouncing this up and down?

As this is a townhouse I will have to talk to body corporate shudder who are terribly slow and unreliable in every way possible as to what we have to do to get permission to run piping outside the house to hold the cabling.

Edit. Updated distance to exchange from 5km to 1.8km (my bad I did not remember correctly)
ADSL2exchanges has an estimate speed of 9666 kb/s

    I am 5km away

5mbps at 5km. That is more than reasonable.

    • Sorry I had the incorrect info in OP 1.8km from exchange

  • Hate to say it, but be glad you've got 5mbps. I'm getting 3.5 on a good day, 4km from the exchange. I installed a new phone point directly from the junction box and that made zero difference. Sorry to give you bad news, but if there was a fault on the line you'd more likely get nothing at all rather than slow speeds.

    • Sorry I had the incorrect info in OP 1.8km from exchange

You don't want to get new (probably expensive) cabling done before you're sure it's the problem. Why not get in a cabler who can temporarily connect your modem straight to the outside junction box and run some speed tests? Shouldn't take any more than half an hour.

However, as everyone else has already said, 5Mbs at 5Km is pretty good. I used to get less than that at 3.5km when I was on ADSL.

  • I think all signs point to re-cabling it at your own cost. As far as the ISP is concerned, they've cabled to the apartment block, and it works fine (well within spec) - and have confirmed it's not their end.

Looking at the potential outcomes here:

    • The internet from the exchange to your apartment basement is terrible (cant be fixed until nbn)
    • The line from the basement to your house is terrible (your responsibility)
    • The line from the basement to your house is actually ok (looks back at number 1).

tbh i think their obligation to help you has been met by sending someone out to check.

    • Thanks for the response. Just wanted to clarify in no way am I blaming them, just trying to find out what my best option is to try and get some better speeds out of my net. If it is worth it to get re-cabling done from box to house outlet.

      • probably try pjetson's suggestion.

  • I'll be stoked to get 5mbps on my adsl 2 :P I don't even reach that on my good day.

I pay $80 pm for 0.8 speed with 200gb cap, wonder how nbn will be for me

I'm 2.1 km away from my exchange, i get full adsl speeds of 2.1 megs/sec. Don't let them fool you into thinking distance has anything to do with your issue.

Whenever they say " It could be this " means they really have no idea, and are trying to fob you off.

  • Best I get is 5.2mb/s and am 2km from exchange. Best I can get and best it will be. So no UHD streaming for anyone.

Streaming Netflix on standard definition with a fhd TV isn't so bad.

    EDIT

If you had a short like I did with my phone line you would have bugger all speed and in some cases clap out, so a short in the line isn't the problem.

Hi /u/knobbs, just wanted to clarify that you are in fact 1.8KM from your local exchange? Plugging in your suburb into ADSL2Exchanges and TPG Maps yields results otherwise, it says that your suburb is considered over 4.5KM+ beyond coverage.

Other than that, I would tend to agree with other posts who have advised that you consider taking the matter into your own hands and hiring a cabler.

As others have mentioned, your internet speeds are quite good!

    • Thanks for your input (removed), now go DL me some movies and drive them over.
