Bought Wrong $1200 Rug Design from eBay!

I have been looking into 100’s of wool rugs over the weekend. I shortlisted 3 and added them into Ebay cart. After lengthy discussion with wife, we agreed on 1 design. I bought the rug in morning while I was in hurry for work this morning at 6:30am. Upon checking the receipt, I realised that I purchased wrong design. I sent message to seller around 7:30am that it was purchased in error so please cancel and process the refund. I sent them another reminder at 11am but I received an automated confirmation from eBay at 1pm stating that the item has been shipped.

I have sent numerous messages to seller but they are not responding. This is $1200 rug which I don’t want. I understand the seller had plenty of time to cancel and they will get full credit on eBay fee upon cancellation but they are playing devil by not responding and going ahead with the shipment.

What are my choices here? I cannot return upon receipt because they offer exchange as per their return policy.

TDLR: Bought wrong rug in hurry and seller has shipped it despite of 2 messages.

**Update: I received response from seller at 4pm yesterday stating that they have just read my message and already organised delivery. They responded to message which was sent at 3pm and they ignored messages which were sent at 7:30am, 10am and 1:30pm. If they are running business and use courier, I understand they could generally get credit from courier company for cancellation. I use temando 5-6 few times a year and I had no issue cancelling pick up with them where they provided me credit.

If they were unable to cancel the booking, they didn’t still even ask me whether I was happy to bear courier cancellation charges. Clearly they are trying to force sale!**

investment? I assume you don't have kids :)

        • -1

I have an 8 year old son.

@xuqi: That's an investment of another kind. One which you can't guarantee any returns.

        • @flaminglemon:

Yeah, but I figured I could afford One even at whatever the current going rate is, for the lifetime support of a child.

        • @xuqi: If he ever asks you to buy a rug then, you better make sure you buy the right one.

Wouldn't want to get on his bad side.

  • +2

Put the purchased rug you don't want and can't cancel under the 80k high yield investment merc then purchase the one you want.

Surely you can do that if your dropping 1200 bucks on a rug.

  • +1

I don't think the seller is at fault. They could have been more understanding but benefit of the doubt is they didn't see your messages and the rug has been shipped.

You bought the rug, paid for it and the transaction is complete. If you need to return it, you will need to follow the return policy (if there is one) on the sale. If there is no return policy, you are stuck with it unfortunately. You may have the option to send it back at your own cost potentially if the seller obliges.

That's some nice digging, smashed! OP's got 99 problems and now a rug is one of them.

      • +1

        There are plenty more.
I tried to help about 3 times but he / she just ignored me :(

        • +3

Really kinda sheds some light on the OP, doesn't it?

Drama queen that never learns. It’s a HE. He said he has a wife.

But sheesh would explain it if he was a woman. Not a bloke.

Now I’m gona have half ozb on my case. But u know it’s true. Spending 2 hours trying on shoes u know are 2 sizes 2 small!!!!

    • To be polite, I thought that was one of the purposes for having forum section Ozbargain where people could seek some guidance on issues from fellow members.

I have asked 3 times to name the seller so that I can take a look and try to help but you have literally ignored me each time.

I could say that the first thread regarding throwing away friendship because they wouldn't lend you large sums of money suggests that you are not polite, but I won't :)

Who is the rug seller? Do you actually want help, or just attention?

        • +8

          @Tipu:

You are not shaming them. You bought it and they posted promptly. That is top service.

I wanted to look at a listing and see how you can get out of it. There may be a way.

        • @smashed:

you rnot naming your self.. lol

        • +3

          Still getting ignored :(

        • +2

@sund00bie: It might be possible the OP is a guy with a wide imagination sitting in his lounge and wasting all our times ^^.

'Give me one good reason for naming and shaming'

Lol you were about to name and shame your mate in front of all your friends for not lending you money. Im just saying, double standards.

        • @RandomDeviation: OP obviously needs some interaction and attention. He might be depressed and lonely or worse. Let's err on the side of caution.

@smashed I wish I could use all of my daily upvotes on one comment.

      Nice work.

OP seems to have a problem with buyers regret.

    • +4

Wow… okay. That username though. In Malay, "tipu" means trick/deceive. The plot thickens….

    • Don't be polite. Just say he's a drama queen.

    • +5

      Good work digging this up.

OP has previously said on 02/08/2016 - 07:58 from another post "It is important for me as I am top rated seller with more than 600 reviews and 100% feedback. I don`t want to ruin my status when something is beyond my control"

This guy obviously knows exactly how eBay works, yet, comes here and whinges about his own mistake!

    • Hahaha, post of the day right here.

Makes me wonder if Tipu really is this bad at life or if he's just attention seeking.

  • Thanks everyone for your assistance. I always agreed it was my mistake so I will have to live with it as an expensive lesson considering the seller is non responsive.

  • +1

Mark 'return to sender' and drop to auspost/ courier. Ask seller for cancel/ refund after a week.

  • Geeze …Why on earth would you bug a $1200 dollar rug from EBAY? especially from a store without a good exchange option?

Sorry OP, This is mostly your responsibility. Try reach out to the seller to see if you can reach a compromise but expect to pay return delivery and a restocking fee at least

    • If you think that is expensive I don't even want to tell you how much I paid for my antique Persian Vase Carpet earlier in the year

      • No jealousy votes negs please

      • That's some sickle carpet you got there.

hey, it was in your top 3 of rugs, ENJOY IT , you might actually like this one better!!!!!!!

  • You could always refuse delivery when they try and deliver and it will be sent back.

  • Lol

eBay has buyer protection. And so does PayPal.

When I did research I came across heaps of posts where the seller got screwed due to the protection.

You should be able to return the item, or you can if you are unethically inclined damage the good -, stain it or something and say the product was different to what was advertised.

eBay should side with the buyer

    • +1

Great tip, are you selling anything atm? I'll be your new favourite customer.

      • +1

I think it's unethical - but it is a solution. Fear of this lopsided favour given to buyers is exactly why I don't sell through eBay.

        • One word… karma…

        • +2

@spriggy: if you think the universe gives a shit about what you do - then you are delusional.

There is no great equaliser in the world - if Karma was a thing Jimmy Savile wouldn't have died rich and free - or Trump wouldn't be president

        • @x853: What goes around comes around, that's the essence of karma… it's got nothing to do with the universe giving a shit about what you do. If that's how you have described it, you have missed the point.

Back to the original point, rephrasing it differently - giving an unethical solution is hardly a solution.

        • +1

@spriggy: you missed the point. What goes around does not come around.

          There is no universal equaliser.

        • @x853: Tip tip tip fedora!

Be super scummy and claim you never received it. Get refund from Paypal. Profit.

    • Just don't sign / receive the order and send it back. This may be the only option in your favour.

  • +3

I wish we could neg forum OPs.

You only get 5 negs a day for comments so often with really bad forum post you have to carefully choose which of the OPs reply are worthy of those negs.

    • +2

I do think the limit is a bit restricting - I like to think of the voting process as a way for the community to moderate posts and having a limit makes it harder to downvote all the rubbish.

I can see how it could get out of hand if everyone had unlimited votes though.

  • Tough luck OP. First you made a painful mistake and now you're being berated on the forums.

Honestly, what you're asking isn't unreasonable and I believe most members would be doing the same thing. People can make mistakes and click on the wrong item. Many of us would have been to physical stores and picked the wrong item off the shelf, often not even looking anything like the intended item. We would just go back to the store and have it refunded/exchanged. The only difference between that scenario and yours is that yours is online and a bulky item.

If you're ready to bear the cost of redundant shipping arrangements, I don't see why the store should continue to ship the item. A sale isn't earned simply because someone is (extremely) clumsy.

  • +2

Refuse delivery ["Nah mate, never ordered that. Look at the design, only a mug would order that."] when it arrives by courier. They'll return it to the seller. Then lodge a "Did not receive item" claim. If the seller wants to play hardball, play dat hardball.

  • +2

    https://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/money-back-guarantee.ht…

"A buyer reports that they didn't receive an item or requests a return within the eBay Money Back Guarantee timelines"

Might be able to argue you requested return within the eBay Money Back Guarantee timelines and seller ignored.

    • Never knew about that, thanks!
      the things you learn
However probably won't apply in this case, if you read down it says under Not covered "Buyer remorse or any reason other than not receiving an item or receiving an item that isn’t as described in the listing (see the seller’s return policy for return options)."

  • Sounds like the only leverage you have left is a negative feedback for poor communication on their behalf.

  • +2

I'll give you $99 for it. Was looking for a new rug.

  • +1

    hah? Tipu " kena tipu " 🤔

  • +2

You just need to refuse delivery when the courier shows up.

    • It most likely has an authority to leave. Or if you refuse, this would be logged on the courier companies system (StarTrek, AustPost, Hunter all take digital snappies now), PayPal would see, and tell you to get stuffed. You can go whinge to your bank, but in this case that would be fraud if you say you didn't put through the transaction, back and force vice versa, if the seller wanted to they could hassle you around as you had a binding agreement with them. But at $1200 for a rug - I think time would be more important to you.

  • You could decline the delivery and then it would have to be sent straight back to where it came from.

  • +3

Order two more wrong designs, so that you have 3 in total. Because we already know 2 wrongs don't make a right, but may be 3 can.

  • The seller did nothing wrong. You already committed to buy it. You cant shift the blame onto the seller. Its your mistake. They do not have to refund it. Deal with it.

  • Only wish the general public are as understanding.

"You are not entitled to a return simply because you changed your mind or made an error."

I don't think eBay sellers check their e-mails every hour. That eBay seller probably has a few hundred SKUs.

  • +3

I think Op is a bitch, sorry but the forums are not here for you to bitch about everything bad that happens in your life. Thats what therapists are for. You have enough money to buy a 1200 rug then in my opinion your life is good other ppl cant pay for electricity, gas & water. Big deal you got your 2nd or 3rd favourite rug and you upset your wife. Imagine if everyone posted their problems, the forum would be full of Eglobal did not honour warranty, ebay buyer scammed me, paypal did not rule in my favour. Sook sook sook yeh i know it sucks but sorry build a bridge and get over it

  • Spray paint does wounders.

    • Or Sharpies

  • PayPal will cover $45 return shipping

  • Wow you spent $1200 on a rug on Ebay?? Thats a lot of money for something youve only seen in a photo. You can get rugs for like $100 on Ebay that are pretty good. The guy was probably so happy someone actually purchased his outrageously expensive rug he just didnt want to ruin it by replying.

I guess did you purchase the rug using Paypal? You could probably lodge a dispute through them to get your money back.

IDK good luck with it :/

  • I did that once on Kogan eBay store. I tried calling eBay, Kogan within 20mins of ordering. But they still went ahead and shipped the order next day.
