Note that Moto G5S Plus is now available so further price falls to be expected.

    • Still no compass on G5S Plus is a bit disappointing. Only advantages I see is metal body, slightly larger screen and maybe better camera.

    • +1

It looks like the G5S Plus has the second SIM slot as either SD or SIM, so that seems a bit of a step backwards. I can't seen any major advantage of the G5S Plus over the G5 Plus. A metal body is neither here nor there for me.

      • +2

Using an SD card on the Moto G5S confirms that it is 2 SIM cards or microSD card. This was a major differentiating feature of the Moto G5.

I will now be crossing this phone off my list as Dual SIM is vital and 16GB is insufficient storage without being able to extend via a MicroSD card.

  • +3

It'll be getting Oreo too. But just be careful. Motorola only promise one major upgrade per device. https://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-announces-oreo-updat…

    • This is why I wouldn't buy Motorola. Why don't they offer at least 2 major updates?

      • +2

This is why I STOPPED buying Motorola. I was a fan since the days of the StarTAC. I had Moto phones back in the Froyo, Gingerbread and Honeycomb days. Both models I had were promised upgrades, but they backtracked. That's when I gave up on Moto. Had my hopes raised when Google bought them, but then lost hope when it was sold off again.

EDIT: Just took a look… I've actually had Moto Android phones since Donut. I was more loyal than I thought. Sorry Moto. Never again. I don't even trust them with their Android One phone.

        • No LineageOS either. Its been out for 6 month and no developer has hopped on board, so probably never will……

        • +4

          @garratt torlesse:

          LineageOS 15 - Updated October 03

          LINEAGE/AOSP 15 - Updated October 08

          LineageOS 14.1 - Updated July 18

          Moto G5+ ROMs, Kernels, etc

BTW, the Moto G4+ came with Android 6, it's now getting Android 8 - that's two major updates - even if it did take a bit of a backlash to get it.

        • @garratt torlesse:

I think if Motorola wants LineageOS support they shouldn't release a slightly better phone every 6 months.

Too many models = no support.

        • @4wd:

Not on the official list though.

          https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/

and all are marked as unofficial. The longivitiy of the support (and probably the stability of the builds) may be more iffy than otherwise.

        • Agree. Super disappointed by their decisions not to upgrade the Atrix back in the day. Not to mention they sent me on a wild goose chase to have the screen repaired from ghost touches even though its a known issue with their phones.

        • @garratt torlesse:

Maybe, but I was just pointing out that your statement, as given, was incorrect.

I have no trouble using an unofficial port, as long as it doesn't cause the phone to catch fire that's fine by me.

        • @4wd:

Well, you have people porting all sort of things to all sort of devices. It doesn't mean that they are actually "supported".

If its not on the official list, then its not properly supported.

Besides, the issue isn't if the rom works today. The issue is whether the rom will be updated 2-3-4 years from now and you need a communitity that will stay with the device long enough, thats where the official support is important.

Currently on the original Moto G 2013 and still getting updates. If G5 doesn't make it to official status, doubt it would last as long.

        • @garratt torlesse:

BTW, just as a matter of interest, when was the first build of LineageOS for the Moto G4?

It was released in May '16, yet the LineageOS builds are from July '17 onward, CyanogenMod seems to be from September '16 onward - both are many months after the phone was released.

Perhaps it takes the time for "unofficial" builds to gather momentum before the "officials" go , "Oh, yeah let's add this phone." ?

      • They do offer 2 major upgrades on sone phone lines …… Check model.g4plus will be getting Oreo.

        • It wasn't meant to though. They made a mistake when promoting it and now have been put to task by the G4+ users.
I have a G4+ and honestly don't expect the update in a hurry, and realistically, if at all.

  • I'm not sure $299 is a special price anymore - it seems to have been that price in all the local retailers for the past month, at least.
I almost went for one of these in the recent Bing Lee eBay promotion.

In the end though I got caught in a moment of indecision between this and a Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) at $399 (although in tomorrow's promotion it will be $480 which is twice the price of the G5 Plus).
Then the HTC U Play dropped to $398 at Harvey Norman.

I know the Moto G5 Plus gets great reviews as a budget phone, but is it really any good?
Could anyone tell me how it compares to the Galaxy A5 or HTC U Play? (They didn't get such glowing reviews but they were twice the price at launch in the top of the mid-range price bracket.)

For me, the drawbacks of the Moto is it's 16Gb built-in memory and dodgy camera reviews. I take a lot of pics of my daughter so a decent camera is desirable, though maybe not an extra $200. I also store a lot of music and videos on my phone so I would need to add 16-32GB SD storage though.
The other two phones both have 32Gb built-in storage, 16MP front and rear cameras, teh HTC has image stabilisation (the Samsung doesn't), and the Samsung has IP68 waterproof rating (in the Samsung). The Samsung ships with Android 6 rather than 7.
At $399 I had swung towards the Samsung, but crucially hesitated at it only being available in gold and missed the deal deadline.

Now I'm wondering if I should go for the HTC U Play for it's better camera and larger storage. It's smaller battery is a bit of a disappointment though.
My current phone is a HTC One XL that loses the SIM card every few minutes so I'm a bit wary of them.

According to this review the G5 plus camera is pretty good.
      https://www.engadget.com/2017/04/06/moto-g5-and-g5-plus-revi…

"The G5 Plus features exactly the same primary camera as the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. That is a 12MP sensor with "dual autofocus pixels" and f/1.7 aperture. And credit where credit's due: it's a flagship-grade camera that spits out the same quality of images as the Galaxy S7 line. Quite simply, it takes gorgeous, vivid images with heaps of detail. You can also leave the phone to take care of white balance and exposure, because it's rarely wrong."

      • Thanks, Ronnnie.
Interestingly that's the first review I've seen that claims it's a flagship-grade camera - no offence to you, Ronnnie, but I find that hard to believe.
For one thing, the footage I've viewed of the video camera is extremely shaky, which indicates there's no image stabilisation.
I'm sure I read that lack of OIS is the difference between the Galaxy A7 camera and the S7, and that it's a significant difference - especially in low light.

On the other hand, if the claims about the camera hardware are true, then it would seem to suggest that the Moto G5 Plus and Galaxy A7 would have very similar camera performance.

        • Galaxy A7 actually has OIS. It just does not have the exact Samsung camera sensor that S7 uses.

        • +1

On paper the Moto G5 Plus is quite good, it uses a wide aperture of f/1.7 to let in more light to the sensor and a relatively large sensor (1/2.5" same as S7 edge) for a phone in it's price range. yes the Moto G5 plus camera is missing OIS (obviously a cost saving measure), and if you care about taking video you would be better finding a phone that supports OIS. This is a phone that made to meet a certain price point, there are going to be compromises to meet that price. It's obviously going to be a step down to any recent flagships, even if it's sharing same hardware type. I glanced at a few reviews and found a few negatives, but they mostly compared the G5 Plus with flagships like the S7 (probably because of hardware), but also stated that it was still very good given it's midrange status.

The A7 on paper is using a different sensor type to what the S7 does, by the looks of it it is a cheaper smaller sensor. It uses an aperture of f/1.9 which means it doesn't let in as much light to the sensor as the S7 or Moto G5 Plus. Also by using a higher megapixel sensor, this means pixels are smaller in size when compared with the S7 and Moto G5. Bigger pixels if all things are equal should result in less noisy photos (especially in lower light).

Now that just in theory and how that translates to real world use could be a lot different, because there's other factors at play such as the software and how well that hardware has been implemented.

When it comes to these lower end phones, my expectations of what the camera will offer would be low. :)

        • The camera takes decent pictures in good light. Low light is a different story and I guess this is where OIS comes into play. Also, I'm pretty sure Samsung have some decent post processing algorithms (not as good as Googles HDR+ though) that lift the photo quality a bit above what you'll see with the G5+. If we're lucky, maybe we'll see a port of the HDR+ app…

        • @motor89: @Ronnnie: @dontpanic:
My apologies, I meant Galaxy A5 not A7, but I think you've answered enough to help me make up my mind.
          Thanks very much, everyone.

        • 2 parts to enable a phone to take photos hardware AND software, so camera hardware alone might not get the results you want , hence software updates to fix problems.

    • +12

The 'bargain' is not the $299, it's the $239.20.

Also, if a good camera is a requirement because you take pictures of your children, is a couple hundred extra really that much? Will you look back in a couple years and still regret paying for a good camera?

      • +7

At this price the camera will always be a comprise. If camera is important with this budget you are better off buying an older flagship model or using a real camera.

        • @Krouton24 - I have a dSLR for those special occasions when one can plan ahead and have a proper camera ready. But that's not very practical for those spur-of-the-moment pics nor playground pics.

The problem is, I'm not sure if the cameras on the U Play and Galaxy A7 are really any better than on the Moto G5 Plus.
I think reviews tend to suggest the U Play has a better camera, but the rest of that phone would come into question.

@Ronnie - I currently have a HTC One XL which was once upon a time their Australian flagship. Unfortunately to accomodate 4G support, HTC swapped the processor and battery for smaller versions. Otherwise it was considered a great phone. Alas it never received a second OS update (as promised by Telstra) and now the built in apps struggle to perform as there is no update support for them (for example, the Mail app is a pain to set up and sync with Outlook because the latter changed some protocols a while back (as such I get notifications that emails have failed to send when they have actually been sent, thus I end up spamming the recipient), and the Internet browser often fails to obtain security certificates from websites (that I can access in Chrome). Unfortunately only a small portion (approx 4Gb, maybe) of the 32GB in-built storage is available for apps, so the inability to uninstall these outdated apps becomes a major issue. It's a shame because HTC Sense is a nice UI and the stock apps were quick and light. But this is something of which I'm now wary when buying older models - once the support has finished for that device it seems to be on borrowed time, in my experience. My Nexus 7 (2012) also suffered as soon as I installed the second Android OS update - effectively crippling it.

The 8MP rear and 2Mp selfie cameras were always weak points, but not terrible. Once I learned to turn off the awful HDR mode, and use speedburst when photographing the restless subject, I managed to get more satisfying snaps. But they're not good enough to print.

As long as the camera isn't worse than what I already have, I won't be unhappy, but a better camera would be nice. And I am inclined to agree paying a little more for a better camera is worthwhile, but if it's nearly doubling the price I would want to be sure it's a better camera and a better phone in general.

Locally I haven't seen any good prices on last year's flagships (my budget is going to be around $400 max, but as an Ozbargainer, if I can get a good phone for $240…..). I have seen a Galaxy S5 for about $300 on Mobileciti ( I think), but I'm not sure whether that would be classed as local or grey imports. Other than that, there's a refurbished iPhone 5S for $350 at Aldi.

        • @sam buster:

I personally would expect a significant improvement even from the Moto G5 Plus over the old HTC phone camera you are use to.

Locally you probably won't see anything, most the deals that popup are grey imports. It's ok buying grey imports from respectable sellers. Something like a LG v20 represents really great value. I have had ok experience dealing with warranty issues from grey imports before, so don't mind going down that avenue. However I can understand people preferring to have the peace of mind of local support and dealing with local store if issues come up.

        • @Ronnnie: Thanks again, Ronnnie. You've been a great help.

      • +1

Yes, you are right about the 'bargain' price - however I was referring to the OP's first line, "advertised special price of $299."

If Good Guys are claiming $299 is a special price (which I was pointing out, it isn't a special price) then might we expect to see the price go up tomorrow when the new promotion starts?

        • Update to my above post - someone later on has stated that the "special price" runs until Wednesday, 11th.

    • +5

Moto G5+ supports a microSD card which you can merge with internal storage.

    • +1

One thing that annoyed me with the G series was the lack of compass. Only the US variant of the G5 comes with compass built-in. So apps like Skymap doesn't work properly.

      • Does this omission affect Google Maps?

        • No, the only time the compass is necessary is when you want to know what direction you're facing when you are stationary.

Without a compass, move a few meters in any direction and the internal GPS will calculate what direction you're heading in and display that as the compass heading.

All the cheap SatNav units work the same way, they have no internal compass.

        • @4wd: Thanks.
Probably explains why Google Maps always tells me I need to drive in the opposite direction!

        • +1

@4wd: "Without a compass, move a few meters in any direction and the internal GPS will calculate what direction you're heading in and display that as the compass heading."

I used it with Google Maps in Paris for a month and it wasn't anywhere near close to being that effective. I commonly had to walk 30+ meters for it to move perceptively in any direction. I also almost never got a directional display heading at all; simply circular location marker on the map.

Maybe that's the exception due to the congestion of a city like Paris as I'm yet to test it at home since to compare. For vehicular directions it's excellent - never had a problem. But for walking it was an endlessly frustrating experience and it annoyed the living shiznit out of me no end.

        • @soothslayer:

Yes, built up areas might inhibit effectiveness a bit due to multi-path ghosting, etc.

I drove ~2300km in Ukraine over the course of 3.5 days in June using just Google Maps and it was great. Walking I usually just look at the map then look around, can usually find which way I'm pointing easily enough.

Oddly, easier than having a compass since then I'm trying to correlate East/West, etc with the map - just want to know the direction I need to go, don't need a compass for that :)

EDIT: Thought I'd go outside and test it, I have a reasonably clear view of the sky but there are trees all around.
After GPS Logger had grabbed a location fix, (~10 seconds - HDOP = ~5m), I walked forward, it took less than 4 steps before it came up with a direction of SW.

        • @4wd:
          @soothslayer:

          Thanks.

Fwiw, when I'm in the CBD my current phone has compass and can't even place me on the right street sometimes.
And more than twice I've come off the Harbour Bridge and then gone straight back over it due to satnav errors (the Garmin did this too).

        • My flip case has a magnetic clasp so compasses are always wrong for me.

    • A problem with HTC U Play is that it uses Mediatek processor and it will be stuck on Marshmallow forever and there will be third party support. At least, you know that you can Nougat upgrade out of box for Galaxy A5(or A7), but hey I never mind not having a updated Android OS as long as Google Play supports my OS.

      • Thanks, after my experiences with my current HTC I don't relish having an out of OS on a new phone.

        • "sam buster" if I was you, grab one of these now and enjoy this phone, you will be happy.

For $247.20 delivered, great price for local stock. It's not a perfect phone, but for under $350 represents great value and most people Love It, including me.

        • @ozhunter68: Just been trying to get one - then my wife decided she wanted one too. No idea if I managed though. All orders are "payment pending".

    • Got a G4 6 month back, the phone is OK, does what it should. The screen starts crumbling off in little pieces all along the edges. Motorola Service tells me there is no warranty on the screen, so this will be my last moto.

  • +1

Ahh. not active yet. OzBargain should really emphasise this more (rather than Tomorrow in Blue).

Is this expected to stack with P5OZZIE?

    • +3

No, eBay only accepts one code during checkout

    • +3

Negative, only one coupon per transaction.

  • -1

One thing I found was that Motorola MOTO G5 Plus can't use inbuilt Miracast with any smart tvs, you have to use a chromecast. Also like most cheaper phones the camera is good outdoors but becomes grainy indoors. I heard some people had phone issues when adding a memory card but I have had no issues when using a memory card.

    • What brand and size memory card are you using?
I am thinking about adding a 16Gb or 32Gb Sandisk Ultra.

      • FWIW, I'm using a Samsung EVO+ 128GB UHS-1 U3, before that a Mixza 128GB Class 10 - neither have caused any problems.

      • Just go 64, I thought that was the new bang for buck price point

        • Not on Good Guys prices.

          Ultra 16 Gb = $15
          Ultra 32 Gb = $29
          Ultra 64 Gb = $70

          Extreme 32 Gb = $40
          Extreme 64 Gb = $80

          (Prices without discount)

The Ultra 64 is the worst value, and there's no price advantage to the Extreme 64 vs the Extreme 32.

Good Guys may not be the cheapest place to look though.

They don't have Samsung Evo on the eBay site.

          Thanks.

          EDIT
I think the formatting of 64GB is different to 32GB. Not sure if that makes a difference in this phone.

      • Go with extreme as it allows faster writes when you take pictures.

  • +1

Great deal if it sticks. My wife bought one just a week and a couple of days ago from Good Guys (physical store) for $299. Don't suppose there is anyway I can get a refund of the difference?

FWIW my wife really likes the phone, would highly recommend.

    • Same here. Ordered online last night with $20 off targeted coupon. Haven't picked up yet. Would like to know if I should cancel the current order and place it again on EBay tomorrow !

      • Why don't you call and ask them?

    • +2

TGG have a price guarantee that if the price drops within 30 days of purchase they will refund you the difference, (as a store credit IIRC). This happened to me when I bought an oven from them a couple of years ago. (Or maybe that's part of their Concierge Service, I forget.)

However, I doubt if it will apply to price drops due to discount codes … but go in and ask, I've usually found TGG are more willing to make a deal than other stores. And they haven't really lost that much if they give it back as store credit whereas they have possibly gained a loyal customer who will recommend them.

      • But this is ebay coupon not TGG price drop.

        • Hence my second paragraph.

        • @4wd: yes you are right. Some TGG staffs have the authority to negotiate further and give a better deal.

  • Not a troll question - Would this be a suitable replacement for an iPhone 6S?

    • +6

What you need to understand is that, In the end this is just a mid ranger. You will find that daily task will be absolute fine, for example, messenger, calling, browsing and etc. However iPhone's camera will blow g5+ away. If you are prepared for a jump from high end to mid ranger, it is a great phone.
EDIT: if you want cheaper high end androids, you can search around for last year's flagships, LG V20 is a beautiful phone, Pixel 1st gen is a great choice if you are looking for "iPhone with Android instead of iOS"

      • Didn't expect such a great response. Thanks for this!

    • No as all you apps are in ios …. So it depends how badly you want to save money in order to switch ….

  • No Band 28 on these, correct?

    • +7

This phone does have band 28. Australian stock.

      https://www.motorola.com.au/products/moto-g-plus

      4G LTE (B1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 19, 20, 28, 38, 40, 41)

  • Bugger… Got one two weeks ago for $275 (OfficeWorks price beat MobileCiti) as a interim device till I decide whether to grab a Pixel or V30.

Great phone for $239. Camera is a little ordinary, but everything else works great.

    • How does the Turbopower work? How long does it take to charge the battery?

      • Motorola Turbopower is just their name for Quick Charge 2.0, so the same chargers can be used.

        QC 2.0: 5V/2A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A max

        • Thanks, but trying to figure out long it takes to quick charge the phone in real world? There are few phones this days that support 5V/2A, but that does not make it QC2.0, does it?

        • @PT18: I have the G4 and pretty sure it is QC3.0 and that the g5 would be the same, ball park figures from not paying close attention is that 1%/min would be reasonably close, as 4wd said "Turbo Power" is just their name for QC

        • @PT18:

QC2.0 isn't 5V/2A, it's all the voltages/currents I gave above. The device and the charger negotiate the charging voltage/current.

The Snapdragon 625 is QC3.0 certified, Turbopower is Motorola's name for Qualcomm's Quick Charge technology.

From flat it will take over an hour to recharge to full.

I have never used the Motorola charger, I use a Tronsmart QC2.0 charger and the phone goes into Turbopower mode.

        • @4wd: Thanks guys for explanations.

    • Yep, just got the $99 Sony Xperia XA for the same reason. I think LG have made a big mistake by waiting till November to release the v30 down here. What are you leaning towards ?

      • I'm probably going to wait till after Xmas and see if there's any big price shifts. If the V30 comes down a bit and can be bought for significantly less than the Pixel, I'll probably go that way. Alternatively, I might find myself perfectly content with the G5+ and hold on to the $500-$1000 spare change in my pocket.

  • +4

$299 special price lasts until Wednesday, so definitely should be able to get for $239.20 until then.

$299.00 As Advertised price ends 11 October 2017

    • Except they are all gone already!
      And I missed out :-(

      • More stock is available.

  • +2

I've loved my G5 Plus. Couldn't be happier actually. I'll be grabbing one of these for my partner to replace her dudded Nexus 5. If you need a smartphone to do smartphone things like call other humans, use bookface, google map etc. you really can't go wrong with one of these. Also the battery is pretty damn decent. I find I only charge mine every third day.

    • +2

      Every third day?

      Impressive..

      • +1

Yes, I get 2 days easily from mine - if I didn't spend so much time playing all the free Android games I've collected due to OzB I'd probably be charging every 3 days also.

      • +1

Can confirm battery life is awesome! I have data constantly turned on whenever I'm out and wifi on at home. I use my phone for a solid few hours each day on Facebook, Messenger, Chrome, etc. and usually have screen brightness really high. I could probably charge it every second day if I wasn't in the habit of charging my phone each night already.

      • Yeah. Bear in mind I'm not a heavy phone user. Music, browsing and some youtube 1/2 hour on a train each day + the occasional bit of mucking around at home. I'm not on it much at all, but where my old Nexus was 1 charge = 1 day, I'm getting 2-3 days from the Moto.

Got one when it was 15% discounted. Good value. Beside a bigger screen, the G5S Plus has a much better color accuracy; the color accuracy is noticeable compared to my OnePlus3. Still a good value phone in my opinion - always loved the Moto enhancements to stock Android. Battery life is better than my OnePlus3.

  • Battery (or any component) replacement process on these looks a bit painful.

Still looking for a reason to upgrade from my Nexus 4 due to no 4G, but the fact that I can still easily get parts for it for far less than the cost of upgrading is holding me back. Don't really want to buy something new and then have to chuck it in 2 years once the battery wears out.

Oh, and good ROM support is also a plus. Currently running Pure Nexus based on Android N 7.1.2 and it's still performing well.

  • How does this compare to the Galaxy S4 (which I'm still using)?

  • Will the 20% off also apply to the Moto G5 Plus 4 MB and 32 GB please? I couldn't locate it on the TGG website. Thx

You'll want to find the 4GB version and you'll want to find it on TGG eBay, not TGG's own website as this discount code is an eBay discount code.

The 32GB version is only available directly from Motorola.

  • I have a xaomi note 3. Would the Moto g5 plus here be an upgrade?

This post should keep them honest.

      • Yes, they did

    • Buy now, Pay later.

      • How do you do that?

        • +1

Basically put it in your cart and go through the checkout process to where you have agreed to buy it but haven't paid for it, wait until the code becomes live and then go and put the code in and pay. Not a typical buy now pay later plan, just a way to circumvent price hikes when discount codes become live.
