  • Can anybody actually recommend a good oil drain pan? These ones suck.

    • Just get a under bed roller box, or as a mate does, dig and concrete a big hole, drive cars over it and have a big waste oil drum under it lol

Grab a low profile 6 lit Oil or similar next time(4 is just too small and can still spill) and cut a side panel out. Pouring spout, screw on lid, and handle all inclusive. You just need to something else for the first oil drop until this one is empty or decant into other bottles first. Your local workshop will gladly give these way. I have the real deal, el cheapos, and these. I have used this style for years with oils, bits n pieces, and portable cleaning bath.

      • I like the idea of cutting open a empty oil bottle, I am currently using a different one from SCA - the idea is similar to what you have described but it holds alot more. Only thing it was missing was markers to see how much you drain, but that was easily fixed with some permanent marker :)

    • I forget who it was, but he had the brilliant idea of using an oil transfer pump. Costs about $50, and never need to use an oil pan again. Just poke on end down the dipstick, the other into a bottle, and come back in 5 minutes to find it drained.

If you don't want to spring for the automatic pump, bunnings sells a drill powered one for $12

You can end up with sludge in the bottom of your sump pan building up this way.

yeah that's why i don't go to mechanics who uses oil pumps. End up with heavier metal and dirt in your sump, defeats the point of actually changing the oil.

        • If thats the case then you'll end up with that anyway. Most cars have the drain hole at least a few millimeters from the bottom. I'd rather do it the easy clean way 5 times and then do a proper clean on the 6th by taking off the entire sump tray and wiping it down.

@outlander: I am for and against for following reasons.
Agreed yes but….., the average time to remove a sump, clean and refit with new gaskets/seals, 3-8 hours, plus gaskets/seals & some cars is the engine out first.
          Does anyone actually do this?

Pumps are quick, easy, and change the oil ….but in reality, the sump is designed in such a fashion to remove most of any sludge settled on the bottom, by correctly performing oil changes in the first instance.

Hot engine, very hot is best and drain with the vehicle positioned to place the drain hole at the lowest point possible. If done as specified as per service schedules, oil product guides, and type/use of vehicle in perfect conditions, there will never be any sludge to worry about.
          So, back to the pump.

No, your service and owners manual will not tell you ALL of this, but trade experience and putting all the available knowledge and info available will.

To check, take a rocker cover off and check there for common sludge build up, as this is where most Camshaft/Rocker failures occur because of sludge inhibiting good clean oil flow to the moving bits, which is what removing all the sludge is all about.

    • Autobarn and masters used to sell this green oil dish. Rectangular, its wide enough to drain your oil and oil filter socket. Includes a oil filter holder, funnel that fits into a bottle.

I literally just drive over my friend's house to use it because it saves so much time and barely any clean up.

    • I got one of these prob about 20 or so years ago , only issue its about 8 litres max ,

I then bought a new one that looks the same at repco 8 years ago that holds about 15 litres when i bout a 4wd which uses 8 litres so was tricky moving it when it was full of oil

Works great as has the spike to put your old oil filter on to drain out and the spout at the front to pour the old oil out for disposal

    • Went to SCA today and they had at 2 for $20 a combo oil pan and 8L jerry can. Essentially, you put it under the car horizontally and the oil drains into a hole at the top. When your done, wipe it off, screw the plug in and stand it upright. Very clever if you ask me

  • Is $35 a good price for the pair of 3000kg ratchet stands? link

    • I would be extremely cautious using those with a reputable brand, let alone these

    • Yes.

Please do not use these if you are planning on getting under the vehicle.

In the email it mentions "Great credit offers for the night check your email on Wednesday" so guessing another $5 credit like last time?

    • If you're close to Archerfield, Battery Savers are the cheapest around.

Think I'll sign my wife up for autobarn's autoclub instead and get 20% off a supercharge battery.

  • SO there's a limit of 6 per customer on the spray paints. Anyone have any experience with buying more than that? I can go to different stores but I only have the one club card. Will they notice/care?
