  • Does this phone have Nougat OS? Verge says it's not getting it Nope, it's not getting nougat because of compatibility problems with 810 chipset. (no HW acceleration for OpenGL ES 3.1)

    • I am considering this phone for grandparents.

      • its a great phone. family has had sony z ,z3, z5 all been great.
and it has Android 7 https://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/xperiaz3plusdual/kb…
no idea if this has all bands for australia as it was never sold here.

This phone would have a good camera for $200. Normally a $200 Redmi won't have such an amazing camera. My analysis on this phone

        Pros
        * Flagship camera
        * Water resistance
        * decent battery life, but the good battery life is offset by a power hungry 810 SOC

        Cons
        * The software version is outdated it has 7.1. (thx to PVA) Unsure about future security patches.
        * Power hungry Chipset that is known for warming up the phone. May have been patched already but when you compare to Snapdragon 600 series, 810 is still not very efficient

Other phones in the $200 price point

Moto G5 (Plus??) — good all rounder phone with no big flaws. Software is up to date. It'll cost you $260…
[Xiaomi Redmi note 4x] — very cheap price, mediocre camera, mediocre software-wise but big battery and big screen. Also, no Band 28. $165

the sony is at 7.1 , pretty recent version i think.
and I have found sony to be quicker than friends samsungs.

i am just going by my own experiance. sonys been quick and update available quick (but then delayed by telstra for their versions)

I have one what do you need to know? This phone was my 3rd Sony xperia. I now have a newer Xperia.

It is hot but so is the Z5 they both use the same chip set but different cameras i believe Sony added a better heat sink to the Z5. Lets say in the sun in a hot day its a pain to take a video because it will over heat. Also 4k recording is a pain for this reason.

Battery life is okay its a tad better now that i added my own heat sink. Also no fast charge its max charge rate is 1.5amps but once again that will slow down if it gets to hot.

I added my own heat sinking because i needed to use the camera in my shed when it gets fairly warm.

Its still fast i don't notice much lag except when it heats up. I beat the samsung s6 edge in Antutu and another bench mark when i first got the phone.

The camera is good quality but not many settings can be changed typical for Sony but auto works great i do wish manual had more options.

Mine is on android 7.1.1 Sony said they will continue to update for a little while longer i think?

        • @scrimshaw, any idea what phone in the market has built-in line call recorder? I know most of Chinese phones with Chinese rom have that but am wondering any international model has this feature. Cheers

        • I can't help you with that. Sorry. Try searching on Reddit / xda

        • @aussieprepper: How did you add your own heat sink?

        • +3

@pwoh: Take of the back and put some alloy on the CPU. I make custom torches so I make heat sinks for them any way.

        • @scrimshaw:
No worries. Will probably buy a Chinese edition phone then root and put on Google play. Annoying most of Chinese Roms don't let user get Google play easily.

      • Thanks nisarg.

200 bucks is cheap but if you're looking for a budget phone to last several years (e.g. on a SIM only deal) then I'd recommend waiting 6 to 12 months.

Current Nougat models mightn't see much love into the future. Oreo (8.x) has a new architecture called Project Treble which is supposed to make Google's life in pushing out updates.

Don't let that stop anyone from buying it but I'll hold out upgrading my ancient Nexus 4 until I see the Moto G6. :)

      • I don't need a new phone. I have the Xperia Z, the first one, which I bought for around $330 a year or so after release, maybe 2 years, and it does everything I need. And there's no issue with battery life really, which is good. I would mostly benefit from having a dual sim phone, but even that's not a requirement.

I think $200 is an awesome price for a Sony premium phone with waterproofing. I have a low range Huawei and it's just slow and not premium, so I try to avoid using it, whereas I'm comfortable embracing a Sony or a Samsung or such.

So you think, and for good reason, that's there's no need to take advantage of this offer, and that there will continue to be older premium phones from the premium brands (Sony, Samsung) for around the $200 mark moving forward?'

        That's what i'm hoping for.

I really don't want to, and financially can't justify, spending $800 or so on the latest or greatest, or even on last years greatest, or even $400 or so on a phone which is a couple of years old - when I just use my phone as a phone, a music player, a basic camera, a browser and not much else.

        • This is good for the price but bare in mind it's already 2 years old and Qualcomm will drop support for the Snapdragon 810 soon if they haven't already. The poster asked about whether the phone had Nougat (Android 7) when Oreo (version 8) has been released recently.

If your current phone is still working fine, it's a matter of what quantum leap an already 2 year phone would provide. The main upgrade seems dual SIM, a better camera and a bigger battery.

The SD810 is a bad SoC, runs hot and burns battery.

    • +1

i have found the battery fine, get a few days out of it with a z5 thats an 810 as well.

      • z5 not 810v2 ?

        • It may have been, I don't know.

      • How do you get a few days out of a z5? I am lucky for it to still be on when I get home at night.

  • also, have a look at some othe sonys at mobileciti, you can get newer models for a similar price. (edit; skip that, doesnt seem to be any at the moment)
the z3+ was a very short lived model, think there was heat problems and not long after the z5 was released.

  • This is as good as my Sony Xperia XA Ultra which i paid $299 for.

  • Any RAW camera support in the stock firmware or 3rd party roms?

    • None so far.

Duam sim won't work on Aussie telcos..

    • Mine works

    • -1

According to..? What do you mean "won't work"?

Have used several dual SIMs (Redmi note 2 and Huawei mate 9) and they work fine.

      • Still on vodafone? They will turn off their 2G soon as well.

        • +1

Only affects the dual SIM phones that support 4G + 2G.

The newer phones support dual SIM 4G + 3G so will work regardless of carrier combination.

      • +1

Snapdragon 810 does not support 3g/4g on dual SIM phone. It is 2g on one sim and 3 or 4g on another sim.

        • Right.

If you read your comment again, it read as if all dual SIM phones won't work on Aussie telcos, which is probably why that comment got quite a few negs because it definitely isn't true.

        • +1

          @illumination: you are right.

  • +1

Works on Aussie telcos but not band 28 for dual version. Single Sim version does have b28. Missus has a z5 compact with the 810. They're ok but do throttle. Still decent though but dislike Sony's battery life!

  • +4

Wow this is cheap, highly recommended one of best quality built phones the 6.9mm thickness is superb.

But the dual SIM is next to useless because the secondary SIM is only 2G and 2G is more or less dead in Aus…still useful if you just want to switch SIMs without removing them.

  • +2

Just note Sony's warranty is very poor. You'll have to argue with them to even get any warranty (as it's overseas stock), then once you do they'll direct you to a dodgy company (Fonebiz) who will send you out a refurb replacement, no matter how new your handset is. In other words, you'll end up with a scratched up piece of crap to replace your well looked after handset.

tl;dr: treat it as an 'as is' buy - don't treat it like there's any warranty. For the price, it's still a bargain (even without warranty).

    • +3

I'm surprised they would even agree to honour a warrenty of an imported phone. They explicitly state that they don't have an international warrenty

      • +1

Mine was supplied by an Australian company though was shipped from overseas, so there was a kind of grey area. I doubt they'll even consider honoring warranty on these ones.

  • Would the phone be a better buy compared to a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X?

    • If you value a good camera, then yes. If not, then it's a lot closer comparison

      • Not too fussed about the camera, just wanting a descent overall phone

    • In my opinion this is better than 4x in terms of camera, NFC, Screen resolution and user friendly operating system.

      • What do you think about the moto G5 plus ?

        • G5 plus has got a lower processor
          Poor plastic build quality
Screen brightness and resolution is not as good as sony
          Not fully water proof
Sound quality is better in sony devices
Moto is now owned buy Lenovo (Not sure of how good they are in dealing with warranties and etc)

  • so is 2nd sim 2g or 3g

    • Seems 810 cannot do both 4/3g standby. Get one with 820/625 to be safe. There is a thread in whirlpool about this.

  • Bought one thanks.

  • The stock is now not available. Anyway thanks.

  • Have one. The only issue is Sony Bloatware. Otherwise it is a great phone for this $.

  • friend has one. gets so hot when watching youtube for a while….

Just stopped using this phone. Got it in September 2014 when it came out. Awesome flagship phone. Checking the specs it still competes with some of this year's flagship models! The only one which is quite a bit less is the GPU. So gaming capabilities aren't as strong for high end mobile games. Can't go wrong with this - great speakers, awesome camera with 4K, battery lasts for ages initially - around 2 days with normal to heavy use. Came down to 1 day after 8-12 months. Highly recommended phone!

  • My friend and I have had every iteration since the z1 compact and we both agree that the z1c was the best model of all.

When my z1c broke i jumped straight to the z5c whilst my friend used the z3c. I was disappointed that there was not much of a noticeable improvement. The z3c was pretty much identical in real life performance apart from software upgrades. If I had my time again, just get the z3c.

Then we both jumped ship recently to the Samsung Galaxy world. We now realise that although at the time of release the Z series were ok, they really weren't as good as they should have been, especially the camera. Sony features their 20mp cameras but now after we've been using Galaxy 7 and Galaxy 8 phones, the difference is just so obvious.

I always stood by my Sony as being the best camera shooter because I always used sony (bavk in the cybershot phone days) but for me the Galaxy has shown I'd wasted my money.

  • Back in stock, got one for kayaking!

    • Gone again

  • Anyone here who bought this phone.have you received it. I am still waitting for my order.

I've emailed them via the contact form but no response as yet.

      • I'm cancelling this order via Paypal

seem like not a decent store !
    I wont use them anymore

by the way still available and showing in stock on their store but at higher price :/

    • Yup, I just got the same email. I won't be dealing with them again, seems a little bit ordinary. And yes, its showing as available, but at $279, something a little bit odd about this.

  • +1

Just got the cancellation email as well. They still have the phone on their site but for $279. Suspect they just don't want to honour the cheaper price.

  • They just wanted to use our mony for their chash flow. My order also been canceled. Dogy store. They have still not refund my mony though.

  • My order got cancelled as well . Saying after 2 weeks "out of stock " . The money has not been refunded as yet.

  • My order got cancelled as well . Saying "out of stock " . My money has not been refunded as yet.

  • Has anyone received their refund yet?

    • No, giving it until Friday, that's a week, then starting the Paypal process. What a dodgy seller. Never again.

      • Good idea. They've had long enough to refund the money. I lodged a dispute this morning.

  • I lodged a dispute with PayPal last Monday asking for a refund . I just got this reply on PayPal from Sydney Cloud Service Pty Ltd .
"Please note that we are going to upgrade your order to 32GB to compensate you for the delay and inconvenience. We expect to deliver 32GB by Wednesday next week. Please let us know if you still wish to cancel the order for full refund."
They did not say that in the cancellation email let hope they are true to their word .

    • My order is shipped….

    • Got an email from Shopmonk that the mobile phone with 32Gb version has been shipped and should arrive next week.

  • Received my phone set it up and took it outside for some reasons, I can use Amaysim or Telstra sim but for calls and text. But for some reasons, I cant use the internet connection. Does this have anything to do with the phone setting or hardware?

  • At last got phone today

  • I got my phone today. Upgraded to 32GB. But they sent me the single sim E6553. Have raised a dispute.

    • Oh that's bad… Sorry to hear that.
