  • Not sure if they fixed the trackpad lift or fan bearings issues from last round.

    • I have one from the last round (or possibly the one before that), had no problems. Would definitely buy another, but as noted below, they've got to bump them up to 16GB RAM, 512 GB SSD minimum.

      • +2

We got them at work. Out of an original order of 30, we have now gone through just over 60 due to hardware issues. About 40% had the trackpads pop (we ended up just keeping them after a while as sick of returns, and prob ~70 had the whine of death, while most now have the significantly louder fan noise issue.

        • Ouch, those are not good stats. Mine was purchased mid 2015 and the version was reasonably new then; maybe I was lucky or maybe it was the next year's version that had the problems.

        • So you've been through 60 of them, but 70 of them had whine? That means 117% of the XPS you've had have whine. Every single one and then some?

        • @lostn: 70% haha.

        • @OnlinePred: Was it easy to hear, or does it have to be a dead silent environment to hear the whine?

        • @lostn: this was in an open plan office with aircon etc.

        • @OnlinePred: Would you buy these again?

        • @lostn: Nope, hence why trying to help others.

We bought 2 MBP + bootcamp Win10 as test replacement machines. They are only a few hundred more expensive, but their screens, keyboard/mouse and performance are significantly better so far. Time will tell though.

        • @OnlinePred: Do they have enough RAM though?

        • @lostn: at 8gb they do yes. We develop on them, their limitation is the ultra low voltage CPU.

    • Of course they are.

As long as there are 8th gen CPUs, there will be 8th gen everything that uses them.

  • Still at 8gb ram and 256gb storage… Been like that for a few years.

    • +1

That's a fine baseline for most users tbh

      • Still doable but you would think 16gb ram and 512gb SSD would be standard now.

My macbook pro 2014 cost about the same with 8gb and 256gb ssd (bought in 2015)
        .

        • So? Time passing doesn't mean anything if the prices dont come down and RAM prices actually went up significantly around the end of 2016 due to increased demand and probably won't come back down until next year.

        • @Lief1250:

Yet the One plus 5 phone can have 6gb of ram in it lol

Ye the ram is different but still.

        • @Circly:
Actually the ram isn't too different, that's part of the reason demand went up.
Every phone decided to double the amount of ram they used in one year and a hell of a lot more phones are made every year than laptops.
As for why the phones could do this and not laptops i'm not really qualified or knowledgeable enough to comment, but at the end of the day ram is more expensive than it was a year ago so even making the exact same product as last year for the same price would mean cutting costs or profits somewhere.
We're lucky prices didn't increase or ram capacity didn't go down.

        • Why do you need 16gb for an ultra low voltage CPU?

        • Sure. Back in 2014 MBPs were competitively priced for what you paid for. Sadly, what is the cost of the equivalent MBP with an i7 now? $2679 without the touchbar and $3179 with touchbar. Ouch.

I know things aren't all equivalent, but if you wants a 13 inch i7 MBP, that is the Apple price.

        • @OnlinePred:

Specs should just get better over time not stay stagnant.

An XPS from 2014 compared to 2017 wouldn't be heaps different.

        • @entropysbane:

Apple are ridiculous… Sold my mbp and got a gaming pc lol

        • @Circly: lol extra ram. Ram is getting faster. You now have ssds that are even faster and now really efficient CPUs. You don't need more ram. You need better ram

    • missed thread sorry

  • +1

Paid around the same for an i5, 8GB RAM 256SSD last month. :(

  • I have the 6th gen I7 with the 3k screen and its amazing get about 6hours but the 7th gen should get around 8-10 with the fhd screen

  • Any deals on the i5-7200U? i7 seems unnecessary for a laptop, also looking for it to be around $1400
edit: oh actually the same deals going on for the i5 for $1439.20, same code.
