Hi guys, happened to stumble on this deal. First time poster so let me know if I'm doing something wrong.

Not sure if this comes with the free wireless charger offered through other stores. Also unsure if it comes with the free screen replacement offer.

        • @bchliu: hahaha shhh there tring to act smart

        • LOL i actually laughed pretty hard at this

          @givemethebestdeals:
i hope i made your night

    • Don't you use an iphone 7 plus?

  • +1

Just my 2 cents, yes this device is eligible for free pre order gift ( wireless charger ) but does not qualify for screen replacement.

    • +1

I'm a bit dubious about this. Double checking with the T&Cs:
      http://www.samsung.com/au/note8-wirelesscharger-offer/terms.…

“Participating Retailer” means a retail store, operator or an online retailer in Australia that sells the Participating Product, and is authorised by Samsung for the purposes of the Promotion, and excludes online bidding or auction websites (including www.ebay.com.au), any unauthorised retailer/operator, or a second hand store. The Promoter recommends that prior to purchasing a Participating Product, the customer verify that the retailer is a Participating Retailer authorised to participate in this Promotion, and that the product is a Participating Product"

Problem is, Mobileciti is a normal Samsung Authorised retailer AND they sell on Ebay. I've left a note with them on Ebay to confirm. From memory, the last couple of ebay sales that I picked up from Parramatta, they gave me a proper store receipt. If that's the case, then it is claimable I think.

As for the screen replacement - I couldnt give a crap TBH. Rather they just give me a DEX dock instead of these junk. But I'll take whatever is free they throw at me I suppose.

Mobileciti just confirmed on ebay message it is eligible for the Pre-order gift of the wireless dock.. :)

man the price of phones are getting out of control - I wonder how much the iPhone 8 is going to cost

    • $1500 for the base 64GB model. Realistically $1800 for the 256GB top of range.

    • +4

I'm with you on this one. I really don't understand this whole hype of constantly upgrading to a new phone. Apart from peer pressure or society, to some extent the manufacturers and software developers are to blame here as well. My mum was so happy with her iphone 4s that she was using for 5 years but ever since I upgraded her from iOS 5 to 9 earlier this year, she kept complaining about how slow the phone was.
Anyways, if you can afford to buy a $1500 phone then why not. Each to their own I guess. Sydney property ftw.

    • +1

Yeah flagships used to be around half this price. And the nexus series came out around $400 for a few models. Also Nowadays good phones can be had for a reasonable price, you aren't normally gaining much by having the latest and greatest.

Tho the note series does fill a niche that no other phone does. If Samsung can capitalise on that, then good luck to them, I gave this deal an up vote because it appears a good price for local pre order stock.

      • +1

I've stated before on OzB that Flagships have been going up by about $100 every year with an "Adjustment" every 2 years because of the weakened Aussie Dollar - about $700 or so increase in 5 years since the Note 2 days (which was the time of the Nexus 4 being $400 and the latest Google Phone is now over $1100). This is an arms race with Apple BTW - the iPhone has gone up pretty much in a similar way as well since the iPhone 5 (2012) with introductions of newer designs and the bigger Plus range. So it's only going to get more expensive between this arms race to be "The best mainstream phone (and most expensive) in the world"

        • +1

It is cheap compare to the 1st Motorola phone that comes out.

        • @stargalaxy: lol.. so true. $8k for a Bag phone back in the day. At 1980's prices considering a Ford Laser brand new was around that price.. hahah

    • +1

My first smartphone cost $1200 in 2009. HTC touch HD. Everyone says phones for more expensive, they got cheaper, then they went back up to where they were.

wait is this the safe version?

    • +3

      Not safe for your wallet.

This isn't last year's Note7 that had faulty batteries.

    • Thanks for that. Updated the post with the link.

  • So ummmmm is the wireless charging getting thrown in this offer? If so I'll preorder right now.

    • Mobileciti just confirmed on ebay message it is eligible for the Pre-order gift of the wireless dock.. :)

  • May as well buy it direct from Samsung for $1350 if you have an AMEX?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/325816

Personally unless you absolutely had to have the S-Pen, I'd definitely go for the S8+ instead which can be had for as low as $725 on the recent grey import sales. It's not a $600 better phone…

    • +1

      Well.. the differences are:
      S-Pen
      S-Pen Software
      slightly Larger screen
      2GB more RAM
Much better Camera dual sensors with 2x optical zoom
Australian 2 Yr warranty vs Singaporean 1 Yr warranty
      Official fast Wireless charging Dock
      6 months difference in technology

$600 worth here? That's subjective. I see that maybe as $400 more. But we are talking early adopting here vs buying an established model.

      • +1

Hmm I personally don't even see $200 in value.

Spen and spen software - agreed. But software wise the only thing new is the live writing gimmick.

Screen size increase is absolutely negligible.

2Gb more ram is more marketing than anything else. Android runs fine on 4gb and the s8 does not have an app reloading issue.

Same main camera sensor as the s8, telephoto is disappointing and generally a gimmick. Most people including myself would prefer a wide angle if you must have a second camera. In theory a monochrome sensor would be good but no one has married this with good software to take advantage of it.

Warranty - agreed. Although Samsung has a good reliability record unlike say Sony,LG.

Fast charging dock - equivalent speed blizz wolf one for $20-30.

        Cons:
        Heavier
        Less ergonomic in the hand
Really no discernible difference to the average user except for the spen over the S8+
        Smaller battery than the S8+
        $600 difference

This is coming from a note fanatic who has owned every note except the 7 and 4. The need to upgrade to the latest and greatest flagship every 6-12 months has waned as hardware and Android software have matured.
Heck if it wasn't for the cruddy cameras, I'd even go for a midrange SD625 device like the new Xiaomi A1 for under $300.

        YMMV.

        • +1

Realistically Samsung agrees with you - considering the RRP is $1349 (S8+) vs $1499 (Note 8) - $150 difference. The argument here is probably more around the fact that people are paying for "Early adopters tax" and the Grey vs Local stock. I'm pretty sure that if people can wait and up for the warranty differences, then the Note 8 would be worth $900 from Shopmonk on special in six months time.

        • This has always been the case, not sure what you are arguing about. The Galaxy S series could always do what the note did, the note generally just had a bigger screen and stylus. The S7E had 5.5" while note 7 had 5.7", and guess what, the battery wasn't bigger.

$150 extra for a Note is well worth it in my opinion.

        • +1

          @OnlinePred:
You must be new to Android. The Note series has always been about the biggest and best from Samsung. Sadly from the Note 5 on, there has been little in the point of differentiation between it and the S Edge/Plus series. Look at the Note 1,2,3,4 and compare it with the S series…

The note series hasn't innovated for a long time.

        • @plasmapuff: huh? Did I mention the note 1,2,3,4?

Coming from a Note 3,4,7, as well as many other phones in between, I sure do know android, and I know Samsung note has matured, and so has the Galaxy S series.

Believe it or not, the Note 8 is the biggest and best from Samsung, literally. You literally said it. And it is. LOL

        • @bchliu:
Can grey stock be used with local card payments etc? (chip, tap and pay, magnetic strip swipe)

        • +1

@foundit: Yep. Sure can. The only things that Chip Payments do not like are Rooted phones and USB Debugging modes. Just make sure you dont root it and uncheck any debugging modes and you'll be fine. We are talking about NFC (tap and go) payments. Magnetic Strip / IC doesnt read with any phone.

        • @bchliu:
I thought Samsung developed magnetic strip emulation awhile ago

          https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=we…

        • @foundit: Not sure how well those work against Aussie swipers - never tried it in my previous retail project (2014) where we concentrated on mainly the NFC components and gateway integration. They were preparing to phasing out the Magnetic strip anyway since it is the most insecure component of the card (the IC and NFC are both encrypted whilst the Strip isnt). It is a waste of money (from Samsung) to implement Magnetic strip emulation when banks are going to get rid of it imo.

I have note 5 and absolutely can't think of anything to upgrade. Display is big enough and the camera is pretty good during day time. S pen is good but i use it maybe once a week. Buy last gen samsung if you are after a good phone.

    • Depends. Everyone has different requirements. I cant stand the fact that Note 5 cannot expand the storage and I'm limiting myself to 20 or 50 something GB of storage considering the amount of photos I can take during trips and data I actually keep on the phone. (I've already had many debates about cloud storage but its not the same unless you have unlimited plans and something faster than 5G for instant storage).
As with all phones - it will slow down in due course as software gets more complex and your hardware exhibits wear and tear (especially a internal battery that is not user replaceable).
I did also look at the Note FE (Refurbed Note 7) as an alternative - but even that is asking $900 at the lowest price point through only and only grey import.

      • +1

You are right about battery and storage. But I have been able to get away with power bank and Synology. Software isn't slow at all. I am quite impressed with Samsung software.

    • Note Fan Edition mate. Massive upgrade.
