TPG NBN not satisfied, can I cancel and rollback?

Hi guys,

I have been with TPG ADSL for over 15 years, I was on their $79.99 phone and internet bundle. Because I live very close to the exchange, my internet speed is typically very good, eg 13 Mbps. Recently a TPG Sales lady persuaded me over the phone to switch to their NBN package. It is a 18 month contract for the same price also phone and internet (NBN 12) bundle.

When my NBN internet was turned on yesterday, I found the internet speed was barely 3 Mbps. I checked TPG website, they said, for NBN base speed "NBN 12", the expected speed should be between 5 Mbps and 12 Mbps.

I am not happy because for the same price I am getting much worse service.

I wonder if I have the option to switch back to my old plan. Do I have any ground asking for this?

My arguments would be, I might still have the cooling-off period right (it's only 3 days), or I can say the NBN service they provide does not meet their advertised terms/value.

My lesson learnt here 1) when get sales "pushed" over the phone, you normally don't have the time to do proper research. 2) TPG NBN can be "not great" such as in my case. (To be fair and credit to TPG, my ADSL2 is quite good, and I want to stay).

Will appreciate your opinions to this.

Thanks.

  • I am in the same situation and still thinking to switch to NBN with them or not. I too have been on TPG bundle with home phone. I live close to exchange and can even see it form my house. I used to get around 19 Mbps about 5-6 years back. It went down over the years when TPG kept sharing the same bandwidth among more and more subscribers. Now I sometimes get under 2 Mbps especially when I need it most (When work from home as an IT person during the deployments etc.)
I talked to TPG support on this. They blame on distance from exchange and quality of copper running form exchange. As I know these 2 factors are constant for past 6 years. Hope no one replaced Copper running underground. Exchange or my house didn't move as I can see.

Now I need to make a decision on moving onto NBN as it becomes available for me in couple weeks. I already had enough with the terrible speeds of my ADSL2+ speed while sitting at 300m from exchange and 1km copper length. I checked with TPG on their peak time speed on their NBN plans. They have few plans all of them have "Upto XX Mbps" none has the average or lowest or peak time speed. Their support can't commit on that either. I asked if I get their 100Mbps NBN package can they gurantee above 10 Mbps speed. They said Nooo….. Our Watch dogs/regulators are not doing their job ??

Let us know how you did go please.

you get what you pay for. got 100MB service with Telstra and loving it!!

    • Not really, I pay $59.99 and I get 93 download and 35 upload all the time on TPG's own FTTB. Never congested.

OP just needs to switch around or if they have access to FTTB then switch to that.

    • My relatives are on Telstra and get 13mbit/s.. We do get what we pay for, and what we paid for is a shitty copper network that should never have been used for this project.

    • No, where government is involved - you pay twice as much to get half what they promised and it takes twice as long!

  • OP, do you live in a VDSL2 area? My complex has access to ADSL2, VDSL2, and NBN. I stuck with VDSL2, as the network is less congested than the NBN network in my area. Subsequently, I pull 90mbps down 25mbps up on my (supposedly) 80/20 connection, while my neighbours on NBN struggle to pull 40 down 5 up on their 100/60 connection.

I live very close to my exchange so I wont be changing to NBN until the very last day I have to

100% guaranteed the speed will be slower when i change over…

damn this country is so backwards

    • +1

And going backwards is actually enforced, because we'll be cut off!

  • I'm currently on cable and regularly get 36Mbps,telstra offered me 12Mbps (max) nbn for the same price!

I too will not be changing until I have to

  • OP if you want to ping me, guide you through how to check and advise with certainty if it's your connection

System Information – DSL info is where you find the stats for the typical TPG modem.

    You want
    - maximumum line rate
    - line rate
    - Line Attenuation
    - Noise Margin

  • Damn, my tpg lady convinced me to switch to optic fibre 100mbps. You need a new tpg lady.
