ASUS RT-AC68U Wireless Router - AU $176.42 (US $139.99) Free Priority Line Shipping - GearBest

160

Gearbest currently have the ASUS RT-AC68U Wireless Router for AU$176.42 with Free Express Shipping (5-8 business days if choose AU Express). It was US$139.99 but my Paypal was charged in AUD not USD. Maybe I have my gearbest website settings set to default to AUD.

Note: It has China plug, request an AU adapter and they should send one for free based on FAQ. Ty XyCo

Note when I did the checkout shipping defaulted to Australia Express which was an additional AU$4.69 for 5-10 day shipping so make sure to change the radio button to either AU Express or Australia Priority Mail.

There were qty 13 remaining after I checked mine out.

I think it is a chinese model though. seems to come with an Australian adapter based on the comments section. Is this your understanding as well?

    • Good pickup, I missed that will amend description.

Great router. Even better with the Merlin firmware.

  • Any way to get an au plug to replace the Chinese one? Need a router for my new place.

  • Good line of routers, I ran the N66 for some time

  • +1

Chinese plug is the same as AU

    • Not exactly. Only 3 pin ones similar.

    • 2 pin Chinese plug is parallel… which is different

  • will this be good for NBN HFC? got a sagecom router but I've only heard shitty things about it

    • I recently switched from using it with ADSL to NBN HFC and it hadn't missed a beat.

    • Just be careful. If you're using Optus (who hand out Sagemcom routers), they won't give out voip details. People report inconsistent results in trying to get around it.

  • I think by default PP payments are converted to AU$ by PP, albeit at a rate that's far from great, even up to 5c from spot rate. It's tricky to change this default, and requires setting a card to be charged in just one nominated currency, with conversion done at that cards rate.

    • +1

You can change default settings for each cc card linked to ppal.i.e charge in original currency whatever that may be. You're right, they make it very difficult to find it on purpose but google for a direct link

      • Those settings used to work, however will not now even when properly configured. There was a whirlpool thread about it. PP have for a long time acknowledged the (highly profitable) problem, though have not addressed it(!). The only way to successfully be billed in the merchants currency is with the somewhat impractical work around above, and it is limited to one currency at a time.

      • -dupe

        • The settings work again for me anyway. They used to work then stopped for a while but lately I've been able to pay using the original currency… for how long I don't know.

        • @gimme:
That's good to know. I guess I stand corrected.

        • @chyawala:

Just tested it too as all my other foreign transactions were in USD. Bought some junk on ebay UK and it was charged in GBP.

Go back to paypal settings and reapply though just in case.

I agree it was a paypal scam and they made $$$$$

Great Modem Router. The Device control and parental controls are extremely useful.

    • +1

      This is not a modem.

  • think I'm going to stick with the optus supplied Sagecom for now. probably regret it after I heard all the shit things about sagecom

  • got one thanks op

  • I've been going on 3 years with this model now. I've had it through ADSL2+, and HFC connected to external modems, and FTTP 100/40 standalone in its life. All flawless.

  • or just wait for eBay 20% off and get local stock for around $180

  • What do others think of the Ubiquiti EdgeRouterX + one of the lower cost Ubiquiti AP? Overall cost is quite close to the Asus.

    • +1

It really depends on what you want out of your router/network setup. This is a really nice router, and I've owned one but recently moved to Ubiquiti gear instead (ERX + 2x AC APs) and couldn't be happier.

If you want something straightforward and don't really think you'll need more access points later on though, I'd say get the ASUS. Otherwise, the ERX is good hardware with more enterprise orientated setup I suppose you could call it.

    • +1

If you're a techie then ubiquity is the way to go. It's just a lot more 'fun' and possibly better performance (no specs to back this up). As an avg user that would prefer to set and forget then asus is the way to go. (basically what chiaeru said)

I already have a ubiquity AP and for some reason it completely escaped my mind to get the edgerouter for NBN until someone mentioned it on Wpool. I had ordered the asus form these guys last week and trying to cancel it as in my case it would be redundant (don't need wifi). Already bought the edgerouterx .. can't believe how small it is.

      • Thanks guys.

  • Cheers OP, bought another as I am moving out and need one in my own home.

If you are tight and technical ebay tm-ac1900. Got 2 shipped from US for $100AUD each, bit of mucking round and it is the same router as above with original or Merlin firmware.

    • +2

      tm-ac1900 is an A1 800mhz variant instead of 1000mhz.

Thank you so much for taking the time out to share your ASUS product review. We do value your feedback as we can use it to build and improve our products and services. I must apologize for the issue that you experienced with the device and would be more than happy to help in clearing this up.
This specific model the RT-AC1900 has two variants, one which is strictly for ASUS and the other variant is one that we made for T-Mobile. Even though both devices are the same model they do have many differences including the CPU. The RT-AC1900 which is specifically for ASUS is the variant with the 1 Ghz Dual core CPU while the T-Mobile variant only supports up to 800 Mhz.
I do apologize for the misinformation provided for the specifications of this particular variant and for the inconveniences that this has caused. We will be reaching out to the necessary department to ensure that is corrected to prevent any of these issues in the future.
If you have any further questions or concerns please email me at [email protected] and use the link to this review as a reference. We do welcome all customers to reach out to us as our customer loyalty department is here to resolve all issues that our customers may encounter. I do look forward to your feedback and please have a lovely day.

Thank you for making it ASUS.
      Best regards,
      Abigail.

  • Does this come with a built in modem for adsl2+ or do I need an external modem?

    • No built in modem. Require external modem.

      • Thanks mate.
could someone recommend a decent external modem (I've currently got adsl2+ and NBN is planned end of 2018)?

        • what type of service are you getting with NBN? If it's HFC (modem supplied by NBN) then you may wish to hold off and just buy this model as a router/wifi.

Alternatively you can buy the 3 in 1 Asus which is same as this with a built in modem which you can use now for your ADSL2 and migrate to NBN when ready.

Not exactly cheap but seems to have solid reviews
