Just FYI, if one is travelling in the US or happy with a forwarder, BestBuys has Easystore 8TB for $200USD (although they were 160$ a few weeks back). They'll shuck you a WD Red. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easystore-8tb-external-usb-3…

Looks like a few Americans flogging them on eBay. Probably bought @ US$160
Still, not a bad choice for $300 if it has the Reds in it

    • I bought a few of the WD when they $173us from amazon not true reds, TLER is turned off. Also more agressive spin downs compared to my reds. Avoid the seagate for nas\server builds. Its a smr drive slow read speed on large files and zfs, replaced mine with wd way faster.

      • bit of a layman. are you able to get this information with the model number? i got 2 WD80EFAX whereas the ones from the 16TB WD Duo is WD80EFZX. the specs alone seem to be a improvement though, 256mb cache vs 128mb and made in thailand rather than china.

these the same ones you got? http://imgur.com/a/6qQg2

    • I was just posting this reply:

      "This is cheaper on the US site. $179.99USD + $13.69USD = 193.68USD = $244.09AUD"

Looks like you already caught it. It's been this price for a while. I actually ordered a used one for $144.49USD ($182.13AUD), had it shipped to my mom's address along with some other cheap parts for a server. Thing is, she lives in Houston Texas. So…it may be a while until she posts it to me.

That said, I already have one. Only used it as-is for a few days to transfer files from two smaller drives (a 3TB and 4TB), then ripped it out of its enclosure and installed it as an internal drive. Works well enough to stream multiple shows to various Kodi installs. Supposedly write speeds aren't great, but that's not a concern for me.

I ordered one from Amazon US site on the 20th August and had it delivered yesterday.
Just be aware that the power supply cord is US

    • Its not like most Seagates which come with one of everything?

      • No it does not have the interchangeable sockets adaptors, only has the US one.

    • any issues with voltage? is it ok just to use an US to AU plug adaptor?

It wont be a problem. The input on the seagate power adaptor says 12v input 120v-240v. I was using the seagate power adaptor with the us plug for my seagate backup plus (non hub). All i needed to use was a travel adaptor which u can purchase for cheap online or u can also drop by officeworks or kmart n buy a travel adaptor for $10.
I can also use another included power supply thats included with the seagate desktop expansion or wd my book external hard drives on the seagate backup plus. To the best of my knowledge n exp the power plug is the same on all external usb drives. Their all 12v n use the same sized plug.
Hard drive power plugs are high quality products n both seagate n wd power supplies accept input voltages from 120v -240v

  • Has anyone had issues with hard disks that were delivered by post? Is there any risk of damage to it (short/long term)?

I can only imagine they get knocked about a bit in transit. I know the head should be parked so it shouldn't scratch the plate anyway. Just wondering what everyone's experience has been.

no, ordered 3 from Amazon, one was lost, rest arrived safe and sound

I got a DOA hard drive from amazon a couple of years back, they sent out a replacement whilst I sent back the dead one. Ended up getting a replacement quite quickly and a refund on postage of the dead HD.

I was happy with the customer service.

  • Had a look at this deal again as I keep toying with the need for more HDD space as my drives go closer and Closer to the end of red.

It is now 169.99 on amazon 181.50 with postage to Brisbane and that makes it another $10 cheaper based on current exchange rates so around 230-235.
