Update: 1

Here are the SSDs which will very well make this PC a beast - Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF.

I have tested the speeds on the Dell Optiplex PC running Windows 10 and iMacs running Sierra (TRIM enabled) and they both reported Read/Write speeds of 550MB/s and 530MB/s respectively.

And with regards to the storage capacity, I see that 256GB fits perfectly for most users. 128GB is a bit tight and 500GB is mostly unused to the full extent.

Also, these 850 PRO models are better than the EVO models performance wise and also warranty wise (10 years with 850 PRO)

Would buy another one just for the extra warranty on the i7-4790.

Bought a while back elsewhere on eBay for $380 after $20 discount so this deal is worth it.

    • +1

Yeah, that's the best part with these PCs. They have official Dell Pro Support warranty unlike other refurbished units out there.

      Main Advantages of Pro Support:
      1. 24x7 dedicated customer service ( 1300 662 370 ). Answers the call typically in less than a minute. I personally tried it last night at 12 AM and the call was answered in less than a minute.
      2. Next Business Day service (repair/replacement).

      • Are you able to transfer the Pro-support to the new owner. Without it Dell Pro-support won't service a unit.

At the very least the new owner will need to be able to identify for Pro-support who the original owner was, when they call to book in a service call.

I've dealt with Dell hardware since ~2000 (Optiplex GX1 days), so am aware of how they operate.

  • +1

CPU differences aside, whose motherboard/case has better setup/features between a Dell 9010/9020 and HP Elite 8300?

Thought I read from previous deals that Dell 9010 only has 1x 2.5" slot (without modding the DVD bay)
And the HPs can fit a 3.5" under the PSU and another 2.5" under the DVD bay?

    • I believe they take 2 x 2.5" drives. Will test them when I go home.

    • Correct on the HP Elite 8300.

    • +2

The HP's can squeeze a 3.5" under the power supply and another 3.5" under the dvd(90% sure). The HP has 3 SATA2 ports and one ESATA(slower) which is one more than the Dell.
If you are looking to stick in a full height graphics card, I would recommend the HP Elite. I personally have with the Elites and the Lenovo M72e. Additionally, the Dell motherboards for this series, have an 8 pin connector which needs this to work with an ATX power supply.
However, the dell has a very small footprint and looks much nicer.
They both have the same functionality USB and display output wise. The dell bios is much nicer and doesn't require a bios upgrade for win 10.

    Only 3 feedback?

    • paypal is your friend here

      • +8

Never rely on Paypal or Ebay for buyer protection. Ebay has closed a complaint from me even after I supplied evidence that the seller gave a fake tracking number. Appeal closed too without any further correspondence. Any random string of digits will satisfy them as proof seller has posted item it seems.

    • +1

Haha. New account, but not new to selling on eBay. Have been selling since 2007 with my other eBay ID roiit866. Definitely won't make my fellow ozbargainers unhappy with the service.

    • That is the thing I am worried about.

However, I still remember some new seller sells gift card a while ago from eBay. People report scams and gave neg reviews but I still had my gift cards delivered.

    • +1

I've started new accounts before just to get the free fees promotions they throw at new sellers.
Selling 1 single 1080ti on my new account (someone took the risk) saved me $100 in fees.

  • Can I make this an HTPC? Would it have HDMI?

    • +2

It will be a beast for HTPC. My optiplex 780 purchased in 2011 (I guess) is still going very strong. All the Optiplex 9020s habe 2 x DisplayPort connections. All you need is DisplayPort to HDMI (can find a decent one for about $5 on eBay), which will do both audio and video upto 2K resolution. Even does 4K resolution I believe, but I would suggest a decent graphic card ($100?) if you choose to play 4K.

      • How much space is there for hard drives? Would like to be able to put two or three in there…

        • +1

2 for sure. Even three I guess if it is 2.5". Can also put 4 I guess if you can sacrifice on the Sata cable going to the DVD rom.

  • I missed out the other day on the Optiplex sale. Would any of these have any issues with the gpu uograde and would I need anything other than the video card?

    • +1

Nope. Just make sure that they are Low Profile Graphics Cards.

      • +2

And makes sure it comes with half-height bracket. Some low-profile graphics cards only come with full-height bracket.

        • Some companies are stupid eh.

  • +1

    New seller on eBay…

    I am struggling now.

    • So buy using PayPal?

      • +1

Yeah… Thank you for reminding me that.

One more question, how do I check the eligibility of "Official Dell Next Business Day Pro Support"?

      • WOW… first option sold out???

        • Such a sweet deal it was to be honest. I guess the others are selling out too from the payment notifications I am receiving from PayPal while I type this.

  • anyone of these support normal (PCIE) graphics cards?

EDIT: Found the answer for option 1 - it seems only the 2 options below would fit the SFF chasis

    Optional GPU 1
1GB AMD Radeon HD8490 (For MT and SFF chassis only)
    Optional GPU 2
1GB AMD Radeon HD8570 (For MT and SFF chassis only)

    https://www.dell.com/support/article/au/en/audhs1/sln152041/optiplex--graphics-card-options--discrete-video-?lang=en#OptiPlex_7020,9020&_XE2

    • hmm doesnt sound like there are many discrete GPU options then.

      • There are. Have a look at newegg.com

        • would a low profile 1060 6gb be overkill for an i7-4770?

        • @ltwo: depends on what you the graphics card for. I used the 1060 6GB to drive my 2 x Dell P2715Q 4K monitors at 60Hz

        • @gopi_kv2004: Probably some gaming at 1080p, AAA titles half the time. Drive two monitors for multi tasking (office work) etc.

        • @ltwo: the 4770 is/was a very good CPU.

        • @ltwo: it's definitely an over kill. It was an overkill for my 4k monitors too. But I always want to future proof my purchases, hence went with 6GB.

  • how many free ram slots left in these for the 16gb? if any

    • From memory, most of them have 2 x 8 GB modules with 2 spare slots left. Some of the have 4 x 4 GB modules with no spare slots left.

  • +1

how easy is it to add on a decent discrete graphics card and/or SSD?

    • +1

Very easy. Takes less than 5 mins. I have done it myself last night.

      • Which GPU did you install? I've been contemplating adding a GPU to my OptiPlex. Cheers

  • All look like usb 2 ports only? Are there any usb 3 ports on these?

    • +2

      Yes 4 x USB 3.0 at back and 2 x USB 3.0 at front. Also 2 x USB 2.0 at back and 2 x USB 2.0 at front. Total 10 USB ports.

Also, from monitor connections perspective, 2 x DisplayPort slots, and 1 x VGA slot. Can do 3 monitors (even 5 monitors) at the same time if you add the inexpensive $15 graphic card (mentioned by one of the user above) at the same time.

      • What about Intel SATA3 headers? Does it have any, or are they SATA2?

        • From what I see, they have 3 x SATA3 connectors on the motherboard.

  • What about the DVD rom?

    • +1

It has a slim 8x speed DVD ROM.

      • Thanks, I ordered one CPU: 1. Core i7-4790, 16GB RAM, 500GB HDD,Win 7/10, 4yr

        • +2

Lucky you. Cause I wanted to keep one for myself looking at the extra 4 year Dell Warranty but decided to let them go. Have too many (12) iMacs already. Couldn't justify another one going in to the storage.

Anyway, thanks for the purchase, I will organise shipping tomorrow.

        • @gopi_kv2004:

Thanks, I saw only 4 units left when I ordered.

  • Will i be able to install a RX560 or GTX1050 GPU on one of these PCs?

    • It can only take low profile GTX 1050 like this one with the half-height bracket.

    • -4

Yes, but it is recommended that you install only genuine Nvidia GTX 1080Ti.

    • I'm looking at getting a gaming PC, is this a good setup with that card?

  • +2

    Will this play Minecraft?

  • Looks like option 1 is oos.

  • +2

Any chance for more i7 4790 stock?

    • Not sure. This is sort of once off I received. Very hard to find these kind of machines with official Dell warranty. I will let you know if anything comes up, unless you wanna bite on the other models before they sell out or before the eBay 10% off promo runs out tonight.

  • +1 for great descriptions!

    • Thank you :)

      • Is it possible to add a graphic card myself and what is the size of the case?

  • Missed out on Option 1 and 2. :(

  • How much more, the price difference, if I want the 500 GB hardrive to be SSD rather than HDD of the i7 model?

    • Will be posting the Samsung 850 Pro SSD 256GB shortly if you are interested. Already seen a few ozbairgains sending messages for them.

With regards to 500GB SSDs, I personally haven't seen much use for a 500GB SSD, while 128GB is too tight. 256GB seems a perfect fit (at least on all my 12 iMacs).

      • Main link to product out of stock, I recommend editing the deal and changing to a search result link if you have other products

      • 256GB is still good. I would prefer SSD and use an external hard drive for storage instead.

  • +1

    Good for gaming?

    • Not without upgrading. Try gtx 1050.

  • Sold out. I missed out.

  • Sold out, or ended?

    • Sold out pretty quickly. One of the buyer wanted to cancel the order (option 2). I will cancel the purchase and relist the item shortly.

Will also list the items (SSDs etc) shortly.

  • What's the go with these regarding USB3.0 and SATA3 connectivity?
Also based on comments above about these only taking 2.5" drives (3.5" won't fit), I take it only the tiniest small form factor GPU's would fit, like say a slim 1030 (so no GTX cards)?

    • With regards to GPU's, you need something which will work OK with the normally supplied 240W PSU, and be only single-slot, as the positioning of the PCI-e slot next to the PSU prevents the use of anything larger.

3.5" drives can fit the chassis, depending on the type of drive bay installed by Dell.

      https://ibb.co/mHACnQ

PSU runs along the length of the case.

  • Has anyone found any
other desktops on eBay that are similar to this deal for around the same price?

  • What is the Dell Optiplex 970s/9010s planning to go for? I'm on a quest to find a quiet small computer for just basic browsing and stuff. Also are all the options sold out already? Thanks!

  • +2

    Excellent post structure. Good Job.

  • Any left? :(

  • +2

I have freshed the pages 100 times. … Hurry up please….

    • Sure. Just checking the warranty left out of the 10 years on the Samsung SSDs. The eBay listing will be up soon.

  • Hi OP, do I still have the warranty if I pull parts out of the pc ? Thanks,

    • If / when you need to claim warranty, the unit must be put back as it was originally built for Dell to consider providing support.

    • Hey mate,

What is the exact processor with the 9010? And how many ram slots available on the motherboard?

Ideally I'd like to purchase the "Model: Dell Optiplex 9020 Small Form Factor - CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 Processor ( Quad Core, 3.6GHz, 8MB Cache, w/HD Graphics 4600)". Unfortunately I was at work. :(

If you have any more of the 9020 with i7-4790, please let me know. I'll buy it instant!

      • Hey mate. I know how it feels missing that deal. Sorry about that. But don't think I would get that kind of stock again. It was once off. Lucky ozbargainers who got on to those quickly.

I will check the CPU model on the 9010s and let you know.

  • Just a warning, it's possible you'll not be able to install an SSD into this system. There's no space for it. You'd have to remove the 500GB HDD, but the way it's secured it might not be easy. The SFF Lenovo PC I bought used rivets to bolt it all down. The only upgrade I could make was adding RAM.
