What to do with Google Home?

Hello

Like most people here, thanks to this website, I have ended up with something I don't necessarily want or need.

I entered a HN Google home contest for no other reason than "why not?" and lo an behold I one a Google Home.

Now, we are generally and Apple household with an Apple TV and Apple music and have Sonos speakers dotted around the house, so there is no need to start building a multiroom system.

So, is there anyone who has one who could provide some tips lest it becomes an overpriced paperweight?

Get it to do that Kookaburra thing.

    (That is all I know)

Don't open it and sell it.

This - just sell it rather than try to add something else into your already working system.

It sounds like it might be best to offload it (in your situation).

By itself, it can tap into Google to do things like add appointments in Google Calendar, play online 'radio' stations, walk you through recipes (including pausing or repeating steps) and give you weather forecasts and play music (e.g. from Google Play Music or Spotify Premium).

Obviously it can other things with Chromecast and Hue lights, but these are all separate purchases which you've already said you don't care for.

    • it works with free spotify now as well apparently

  • I am sure you can try to have some fun with it, e.g. Ok Google, can you please talk to Siri?

  • General consensus seems to be to offload the thing.

Ugh - shame. Would be nice to have won something useful!

Think of it as though you won cash, the most useful thing there is!

It's purpose is to collect data about you and everything connected to you in order to manipulate you into spending money without you having any knowledge of the manipulation. Why would you keep it with no use for it?

You should give it away to the first person to suggest you give it away.

Umm.. why don't you ask it what you should do..

    Sell it to some chump

  • Again i'm offering $120 to buy it, is there warranty?

    • $120.01 + a free gift.

  • I have an Alexa as well as the Echo Dot and it has surprisingly become ingrained in our daily home life. Don't give up on it, it is seriously helpful and voice commands become second nature. For example you could:

    • Link it to lights - I have LIFX lights everywhere in our home but there are a lot of cheaper alternatives. You can walk into your bedroom and command your lights to turn on at 100%. We keep our baby in our room so when its time to sleep we set the lights to 5%.
    • Use it as an alarm - I have Alexa wake us up.
    • Link it to Spotify, Pandora, Google Play etc. and have it play your playlists - It's nice to listen to music as you sleep and have it turn off in an hour.
    • I have it linked to WEMO switches so I can control various appliances. I can turn on/off/time my electric fan.
    • You can ask it questions so its easy for example, to check the weather as you wake up or to convert USD to AUD when you're online shopping in bed.
  • Just open the box and experience a new piece of technology.

Give it to the homeless. Now they have a home.
