Great price if you are into that sort of thing, experiences with this company though? I've had 1/1 bad experiences but not negging because maybe I was just an isolated incident.

    • If you prefer qd_au has it for $284 after the 5% off code: https://www.ebay.com.au/p/NEW-Nokia-5-TA-1053-5-2-2GB-16GB-1…

      • Thanks but I'm not actually in the market for one :)
Just telling/warning/asking others about their experiences versus mine.

    • +3

Not great, trying to get a response to my warranty claim for more than 2 months. They keep sending me the same questions every few weeks.

  • Nokia phones??…

      • The iPhone of their day.

    • In budget phones Moto G5 plus seems to rule the roost if you want
      -band 28
      -dual sim
      -FHD
      -Android 7
      -local support
      -change from $300

Most chinadroids don't have band 28, or Australian warranty …. I'm sure the Confucious Institute fan bois will neg me for that one.

Though moto is Lenovo and Chinese.

most phones are running off motorola or nokia patents …. that's why Microsoft and Google bought them, tapped into the intellectual property and sold them again …. so they wouldn't have to pay licensing.

Are Nokia the lead house they once were ….. possibly not, but then Apple don't even assemble their own phones,

This Nokia is appealing because it has band 28 and dual SIM, it's unappealing because it's only HD (720p), not FHD (1080P), I'd gat a moto G5.

      • I actually have not problem with 5" screen being 1280, anything more is just a battery suck, and it's hardly noticeable. Even if you can tell the difference (which I agree you can) I really don't see how it detracts from any experience.

And these are real Nokia's, not crappy MS.

Alas 2gb ram & no quick charge is pretty underwhelming.

    • +10

Here's my obligatory post defending windows mobile, it was a genuinely great os. That is all.

      • +2

That's ok Bill 640kB ought to be enough for any one.

        • +2

Nobody will buy it, who wants a phone screen bigger than 4" hey Steve.

        • @CJ31: I kind of lean that way now re: too big screen. My Nexus 6 was like trying to hold onto an oyster. And the case being slippery, was not the sole cause, its weight and real estate was partly to blame as it fell out of pockets too. It jumped from one, and cracked the outer screen. Still worked though. Then jumped out of my wifes back pocket and into the loo in its second bid for freedom. Needless to say, its dead now. I did end up with an S7, so still well over the 4", but its housed in maximum security.

      real Nokia's, not crappy MS

Right, because the name of a business that thought touchscreens were a fad is such a good indicator.

      • -2

Ah well at least they didn't claim the the internet is a passing fad like their former owner's former owner.

And to be fair, voice is making touch screen less required. VR will make screens, touch ir otherwise, redundant.

      • edit: nvm …I need to read further down before click 'post'.

    • How is HMD Global purchasing rights to use the Nokia name more "Nokia" than MS purchasing the entire devices devision of Nokia?

      • HMD is made up of former Nokia executives. The CEO was Arto Nummela, a Nokia veteran for 17 years, until July 2017 when President Florian Seiche took over as acting CEO. It is headquartered in Espoo, opposite Nokia's head office. Manufacturing is outsourced to a division of Foxconn. Nokia has no investment in HMD but remains a partner, setting mandatory requirements and providing patents and technologies, in return of royalty payments. HMD use a smartphone strategy of providing a "pure and secure" Android experience and high build quality, with brand trust and nostalgia marketing.

        • Arto Nummela was Vice President of Device Sales in Greater Asia, Middle East and Africa Region at Microsoft Mobile.

Florian Seiche was Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing in Europe Region at Microsoft Mobile.

Microsoft bought the entire devices division from Nokia, that includes manufacturing facilities and talent.

        • @TheContact: then on sold them by the looks of it. Who said there's no modern slavery.

        • @TheContact:

I think the biggest difference is that Nokia sets the requirements for the HMD handsets. Don't believe that they did the same while the Nokia brand was owned by MS.

          Arto Nummela resigned months ago
they USED to have old Nokia exec owning the company
          it has already gone

        • @costas60:

HQ: Building 2, Nokia Campus, Karaportti, 02610 Espoo, Finland (Opposite Nokia HQ).

          Execs:
Current CEO: Florian Seiche, formerly Nokia
original CEO: Arto Nummela, formerly Nokia
Marketing Chief: Pekka Rantala, formerly Nokia
          COO: Pia Kantola, formerly Nokia
CFO & CO: Anssi Rönnemaa, formerly Nokia
General Council: Jari Koljonen, formerly Nokia
VP of HR: Tiina Topal, formerly Nokia

You're right it's not Nokia & no relation to Nokia.

    • edit as already sais

I've narrowed my next phone down to an Asus Zenfone 3 Zoom for which DWI is one of the few Australian suppliers. I had a couple of questions so I called their Qld, NSW and Vic numbers after 9:30. They all disconnected after 1 ring. I emailed and queried this. They replied suggesting I try again or contact via their online chat. I tried again. All 3 numbers rang out after 30 seconds.

I suspect that they don't actually have an Australian presence.

I Believe all their products are drop shopped, so I wonder if their 14 day money back guarantee starts from invoice or delivery date.

    • DWI ships from Hong Kong.

    • I suspect that they don't actually have an Australian presence.

What do you define as Australian presence?

They don't conceal the fact they ship from Hong Kong but they also offer Australian returns addresses and local numbers.

"Q: Can I choose to pick up the items at local warehouse or post office?

A: We are sorry that we do not have any local pick up service in Australia or New Zealand. All our orders are mostly shipped with courier services such as DHL, DPEX(Toll Group) or other couriers of our choice from our warehouse in Hong Kong to provide a perfect delivery service for our customer"

I Believe all their products are drop shopped,

I assume you mean "Drop Shipped" which means shipping goods from a supplier direct which isn't correct as they ship stock directly from their facility so the correct term would be "Grey Import".

so I wonder if their 14 day money back guarantee starts from invoice or delivery date.

How can you use the money back guarantee if you don't have the goods yet? Clearly it's from the delivery date or first attempted delivery in the event no-one is there.

      • Youre probably better off doing a creditcard charge back than their money back guarantee.

    • +1

My rule of thumb for business like that. If they treat me like crap before I hand over my money, then it'll only get worse after I do, so I don't.

    • I did a warranty claim once. their repair centre was on Sussex St Sydney. Theyre called atech I think.

Still though, wouldn't go near them again.
If anything goes wrong with your order, expect a bad time.

I'm also sticking to AU stock phones after the reboot loop on my LG G4. ACCC laws don't apply to Gray imports and had I bought an AU stock phone I could have probably convinced LG to fix up their crappy phone.

      • +1

I'm with you. If I did buy one from OS, I'd just assume that there's zero warranty and take that into account for the price. If it was say under $250, it'd do it so long as I had a decent backup phone.

    I used to like dwi.
But not anymore. They sold me a lens with a broken lens cap and squished box. A sigma 20mm f1.4.l, weighing a kilo. I wasn't going to accept a precision optical instrument that had clear marks of having being impacted

I even got their worthless shipping insurance.

    They wouldnt refund.
I did charge back from credit card company.

Then they wanted me to ship their lens back, offered to pay $50 for my shipping expense, and then after they got it they declined giving me the $50.

Before that I had bought another sigma lens, and two phones with no problems.

But if anything bad happens to your parcel it's game over, expect incompetence and bad customer care.
