seems to be multiple variants of the Evo+ with this one being U1 but I received a U3 from the previous shopping square deal

  • +17

Be aware! This is U1, not U3 like some recent deals. They are different in speed.

    • +3

Oh! Thanks for pointing that out, as I almost purchased one.

      • Yea, I was abour getting one as well, just stopped when I saw the U1.

    • Worth trying a price match at officeworks they didn't know that…

      • +8

taking bargain to a whole new level.. a dark level…

      • +1

Worked fine, OW had the U3 version, $34.20 after price match :)

  • +10

You're better off with the 64GB in this deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/318925.

The 'select' version is much faster than evo or evo+ and is U3.

    • +2

I think they have the Evo+ U3 version now.

      • Yeh. Except more exxy. It's weird that they brought out a micro sd with the similar read/write speeds. I can't see the difference. They may as well be the same card.

        • +1

yea, I tried an U1 and U3 card on one of my devices and I noticed a significant difference in speed between the them. So I think the U3 is worth the money way more than the U1.

        • @johnnyle: What device is it?
It's only worth it if your device can actually take advantage of it. Otherwise it really won't make a difference.

        • +1

@eug: used it on my phone, then tried them on my camera with the adapter. You can notice the most different is when you transfer files to your phone, or record videos on phone or camera. A lot quicker.

        • @johnnyle: Ah yes, with those devices you'll only see the difference when copying large files onto them. In normal use, e.g. recording 4K video, there will be no difference.

        • @eug: If you put it that way, in normal use, the older and cheaper EVO cards are fast enough, no need to spend more on EVO+ or EVO Select.

        • @edfoo: Yup, that's right. Fast cards are only worth it if the device or application will actually benefit from it.

        • @eug: Never try 4k so can't comment on that. But with the camera I have. Taking photos, then review it immediately will take more time to load with the U1. So I still recommend the U3 to anyone if they can afford the difference.

    • Yep, thanks. Just bought 2!

  • Thanks OP

Just what i need for my dashcam :D

  • I went in-store two weeks ago to look at this, and it is indeed a much inferior version to the variants of the Evo+ sold on eBay when it comes to speed etc, just be warned in case it's for quick reading/writing :)

  • Is this MLC ?
Looking for a MLC card for my dashcam, 64 or 128GB

UHS-1 Class 1 has a min write speed of 10MB/s, and Class 3 has a min write speed of 30MB/s, and we’re talking also here about increased sustained write speed.

This is a significant difference, and especially critical when recording large amounts of data rapidly, as would be the case recording 4K video. If you’re shooting a small sensor, and just street shooting or portraits, this may not matter much, so just adjust according to how you shoot.

    • +1

as would be the case recording 4K video

Not necessarily - it's bitrate that determines the required card speed, not the resolution. Consumer 4K devices can work fine with 10MB/s cards as the bitrate they use is low, e.g. 60Mbps for 4K on a GoPro or Mavic Pro.

UHS-1 Class 1 has a min write speed of 10MB/s, and Class 3 has a min write speed of 30MB/s

UHS-1, UHS-II and UHS-III are bus interface designations, not speed classes. U1 and U3 are speed classes. It's possible (and indeed common) to encounter SD cards that have both UHS-I and U3 designations on them so it's important to make the distinction.

    Cheaper delivered on ebay

most likely be fake. Harvey Norman more trusted store.

        • I've purchased multiple SD/MicroSD cards from Shopping Square (and APUS CORP, which is the same outfit) and they have all been 100% genuine. Grey imports, but genuine.

          That's the positive.

The negative is that they sometimes take 2 weeks or more to arrive.

      • Link here $34.95 delivered, based in Australia sold over 250 units.

  • Is the evo (non plus) better for random writes? Looking to use this in my tablet PC.

    • I found a site that did a comparison and large block random writes were poor on the plus. If you want to know what difference this might make in the real world you'll need to ask someone on a higher pay grade.

      • Managed to find that site. http://www.storagereview.com/samsung_evo_plus_microsd_memory…. I think they might have got the decimal point in the wrong place. See the following clip (the evo plus being what they are writing about and the evo being the predecessor):

it measured sequential reads and writes of 84.9MB/s and 19.7MB/s respectively, while random activity boasted 79.5MB/s read with 3.9MB/s write. Comparing these results to its predecessor, which posted sequential read and write performance of 44.4MB/s and 19.1MB/s respectively (while random hit 43.9 MB/s read and 32.0MB/s write)

  • Use my last 128gb evoplus card today. Was hoping it was a deal for a replacement.

    No love for cheap 128?

  • Thanks, got officework to price match

    64gb for $34.20

  • how do u pricematch with officework? do we just take it to the counter and ask them to pricematch?

    • You have to show them an advertised price and demonstrate that there there is a pickup location in the same city you're in (otherwise they'll want to factor in the postage cost as well). And sometimes, depending on where you go, and how experienced in such matters the rep is, they'll examine the terms and conditions to make sure whatever store you're asking them to match has an equivalent refund/exchange policy.

Most of the time though it's a routine sort of affair.

    • Just showed them the rate on the Harvey Norman website and asked them if they would price match.

  • Thank you OP and thank you Grish for pointing out U3.

According to OW the U1 and U3 are the same price normally, however now U1 had been reduced to $36 to match HN.

Furthermore, not many OW's have U1 or U3 in stock. If you are lucky and they only have U3 in-stock, u could then request price-match!
