  • So, who foots the bill for this? Does the cafe lose money or does the heyyou guys?

    • heyyou guys

      • +6

Am i the only one feeling bad for Heyyou? They are sure to run into a massive loss from all the $2 coffees and now the free coffees.

        • No. Used to use their app all the time to order coffee and discovered that they had been hitting us up for a surcharge on every order. Have avoided them since.

        • +6

@kipps: Genuine question: Do you have an issue with restaurants or businesses making money?

        • +1

@kipps: How do you expect HeyYou to make money/continue app development if they don't surcharge?

        • +1

@kerfuffle: It is very simple - they can take a percentage of the revenue they generate without slotting consumers for hidden surcharges. The surcharge was not clear to me as a consumer (and others). There are a tonne of other cafes in Brisbane CBD charging similar prices for coffee without the surcharge. The co-workers and I ditched that particular cafe and now order elsewhere.

        • -4

@illumination: Your comment is very much slanted. The issue is with a surcharge that was not clearly stated in a market where competition is otherwise fierce. I have no issue with paying a cafe for coffee. I take an issue with this app charging 10 cents to do nothing merely than communicate an order to the cafe, and then not clearly state that a surcharge applies.

The app's creators are more than happy to communicate, after the fact, that the surcharge can be avoided by pre-paying. Would have been good (and not left a bitter taste) if they had done this in advance.

        • @kipps: According to the faqs, the surcharge is only applicable when you use their Pay As You Go method. If you put credit on it as a top-up, there shouldn't be any surcharge.

        • -6

@kerfuffle: Are you a shill for Hey You? I have clearly said above that the issue was that I did not realise I was being surcharged. This was not clearly stated in the app. Bit hard to know to take steps to avoid a surcharge when you were unaware of it in the first place! I am not going to reward their deception by pre-paying for coffee after the fact.

        • @kipps: No. Just stating the facts. No need to take it out on me because you didn't read the faqs under Support and Feedback before using the app.

        • @kerfuffle: You're assuming the FAQ as it stands today was the FAQ when I started using the app. You're also assuming that the surcharge was always in place. I think both assumptions are misguided. I think they got people hooked, and recently introduced the surcharge without proper disclosure to customers.

        • @kipps: My take on it is the 'surcharge' is in fact their service charge, i.e. their 2% take for the payments and admin, from which cafes charge 10c less (mine does, anyway) for Hey You orders.

        • +1

@kipps: My initial question was not intended to show bias or suggest that I even disagreed with you. I wanted to understand your point of view and was curious to see how you'd justify your opinion.

I agree that the surcharge was not clearly communicated. To me what was annoying was that they (unless I missed something) gave no heads up that a surcharge was going to be implemented. It is probably arguable that they are not obliged to though. They also didn't proactively "advertise" that topping up your account with a balance would help you avoid the surcharge, which as you said, would not have left a bitter taste.

I don't agree that competition is fierce. I don't think there's any coffee ordering app as popular as Hey You - so they can indeed "afford" to surcharge us, knowing that we're hooked (similar to Uber). I also don't agree that the display of the surcharge was unclear. It's shown before you place an order just above the total cost, and I believe it was always like that.

I don't agree my comment was slanted. As I said in the first paragraph, I just wanted to understand your opinion.

I have no issue with paying a cafe for coffee. I take an issue with this app charging 10 cents to do nothing merely than communicate an order to the cafe, and then not clearly state that a surcharge applies.

And that's fine - you've taken your stand by no longer using the app and not paying them. However, I just thought I'd point out that it's very easy to make anything sound as "little" as you just did. All you have to do/say is use the same type of language.. for example..

I have an issue with paying a cafe $4 for just making me a coffee - it's all done by a machine anyway.

          or

All they do is use a machine to make me coffee

Don't forget that a cafe exists because they make money from people like you buying their coffee - and there's nothing wrong with that. If they didn't make money, you wouldn't be able to keep ordering coffee from there.

        • @kipps:

What do you mean by that? That you pay more with the app than ordering in person at the store?

        • +1

@montorola: Yes. Unless you prepay a fair bit, you will pay more by using the app compared to manually ordering in store. The surcharge applied by Hey You for the privilege of online ordering is also not prominent.

        • @kipps:

Ahh thanks for the heads up, once the 5 free coffees run out I'll compare prices between online and in store lol

        • @kipps: I top up my account using AMEX, no surcharge.

        • +1

This is probably a user acquisition exercise for them. Get more users to sign up then they can go to Cafes and tell them "I got X amount of users who can patronise your shop", solving the chicken and egg problem for them

        • @CLoSeR: Topping up using any method has no surcharge; it's when you Pay As You Go that the surcharge applies

        • +1

@kerfuffle: Yeh I figured that reading earlier comments, makes sense as they are being charged for each individual transaction on your AMEX/VISA. A single top-up would be cheaper to process and I prefer having less hits on my card/statement.

        • +2

@kerfuffle: Agree with the above posters who pointed out the real problem. Not that there is a service charge, but they introduced it without letting existing customers know.

Keep in mind many long-time users of the app started using Hey You when pay-as-you-go was the only/default payment method.

      • heyyou guys

        Who me?

  • +1

How did op find this code?

    • +7

My guess is he created it yesterday after he quit his job at Hey You after a major disagreement.

      • +1

Not so loud.. This guy is clearly his spy. Look at his username..!

      • Must be someone named Revel.

  • Playing around with orders to see what counts as a coffee. Affogato ($5.50) not counted but if I order a flat white ($3.50) and add extras (large size, almond milk, decaf) the deal works even though the final price is $6.50.

  • thanks OP! found out too late - will try it first thing in the morning! Hopefully it still works

    • You don't have to enter the code when you're ordering coffee - you can enter it now, and then order the coffee tomorrow :)

      • That's what I did. I entered it twice too and it said both times accepted (nothing like code already redeemed) so will be interesting if I end up with ten free coffees (I doubt it)!

        • +1

Office coffee run on you tomorrow! Good luck :)

        • @carmabella: Luckily I don't work in an office 😏

  • What is the point of this app? Is it so you dont have to wait for coffee/order. Granted im very happy with 5 free coffees if it's working tomorrow morning

    • +1

Yep, to "beat the queue". Love that smug feeling of strolling past the coffee shop and grabbing my coffee without breaking my stride

      • Do you show them the app when you pick up ?

        • +1

Not in my experience. The coffee is simply called out by name when ready, much like other coffees ordered in the usual fashion.

        • Nope. I'm not usually there when my coffee is ready so I'm the grab and go type.

Not that anyone wants my sugarless strong cappuccinos ahahahahaha

        • +1

@kipps: you must really hate talking to people

        • +1

@PAOK11: haha. No - I dropped the app after their surcharging practice (see above). Unless you prepay at least $10 you will pay more for a coffee using this app.

        • +1

@kerfuffle: hahahaha if they weren't cappuccinos I would so go for them. I have strong sugarless lattes or flat whites, I absolutely hate froth.

        • +4

@kipps: I think minimum top up to avoid the surcharge is (now) $30. I also wasn't impressed when they suddenly started charging a surcharge without telling me (I was amongst the very first to start using the app many years ago).

        • +1

@kipps: I usually top-up in amounts of $50, waste of time topping up smaller amounts. It usually lasts me a couple weeks.

    • +1

Order ahead, you get used to the time it usually takes at your local so you rock up as they are calling your name. It's good!

  • It works on new account, using referral code you get 2 free coffee for every 1 new acc.

    • its not gonna work. referral free coffee needs a purchase amount to trigger it. free code won't work on top. have tried

  • +3

How do you check your credit balance?

  • +19

    Hi Guys,

I'm really happy this code worked for everyone and you're all able to enjoy some free coffee.

I had a friend refer the code to me and had to share the love with the community that gives me great discounts.

Let's hope it works tomorrow too.

    • +2

      Legend

  • Can I find out which coffee shops are involved without signing up? (Yes I have read the T&Cs and FAQ in case the details were there)

    • +1

      Hi GordonR,

You can go here and check which stores are affiliated.

      https://app.heyyou.com.au/

      • +1

These are just stores that are affiliated with the app but not necessarily participating in the promo. I have a feeling GordonR may have been wanting to know which cafes are participating in the promo.

        • I have checked for three different cafes and it worked at all three.

I haven't heard anyone say it didn't work at their local cafe yet - so maybe every cafe is in the promotion.

          I'm not certain though.

      • Thanks, neither of my two "locals" are on it, so no need to sign up…

  • I'm in luck, one coffee shop within 1 km. The rest of over 200km away. Lol

    Damn no windows phone app.

    • +3

      Bluestacks is your friend.

  • Thanks, will give this a try

  • Nice 👍, managed to get an iced chocolate at mrs fields which is the only cafe still open 😅, thanks OP!

  • Works for my existing account, customer for years now.

  • It appears youc can only redeem one at a time

  • So can you choose a time when placing an order in advance?

    • +1

Nope I dont thnk so - I was trying to find the same in case the offer expires - I could preorder for the whole next week :)

      • If only :) The faq recommends ordering 10 mins in advance.

    • You can e.g. place your order at 7:45 a.m.

  • Is it possible to order on the spot with the app (avoids having to register a mobile phone).

    • +3

What would be the point of the app then?

      • +1

To take advantage of promos like these?

        • Free coffees!!
plus I'm not keen to have my number given to some random telemarketers

        • +1

@Sydgun: Don't think you'll need to worry about the telemarketers. I've never received a call from them and I've been a member for about 3-4 years.

.. but I guess I won't know if they sold my number to other people..

  • thanks a lot for this!
i even used your referal code.

  • Edit all good! Thanks Op!

  • Thanks

  • +1

Thanks OP! Used your referral. I wonder …do you still get a free coffee if our coffee is free too?!

  • Looking fwd to a morning coffee… hope it is still working :/

  • +7

My local cafe has stuck a note over the HeyYou QR code saying they are quitting the app on Aug 31. They told me HY is going to charge them $500 a month from Sept 1. Previous it has been no charge.

Shame I have been using HY there regularly for last few months. Particularly since the Amex HY deal :) Wonder if this is happening to others.

    • +1

Wonder if this is happening to others.

Out of around 20-30 cafes around our suburb, only 1 is with HY.

    • +1

There used to be cafes near work that had hey you integration. Applied the coupon today and was disappointed to find there are no longer any close by!

      Everyone must have jumped ship…

This is probably a purely recruitment exercise to be able to say to cafes, "we have 45,000 members - join us."

Crazy thing is, 38,000 members will disappear after their free five coffees!

  • Code still works this morning. Just ordered :)

  • +3

    Oh…
    Woops.

I thought this was maybe like the Domino's app or any other order service where you could choose the time of pickup etc.
Just tried the code and placed an order then at my closest shop that I pass on the way to work.. in a few hours time from now.
    Ugh.

    • You can choose the pick-up time to be later before you submit your order.

      • You mean like as a custom note in the 'Note' section?
I guess I should have done that.
Not seeing an actual dropdown box or official method of choosing a time anywhere though.

Ah well. I'm about half an hour out from that store anyway, I'll stop in and see if they held onto it or threw it out I guess.
Can't really complain since it didn't cost anything. :P

        • In the when to place order section underneath the total. You can change it from ASAP to whatever time you pick.

        • +1

          @kerfuffle:
Hmm, I guess the 'Hey You' app is just a wrapper and landing page, and it ultimately depends on which specific store you order from within? (Like Menulog?)
My local shop is 'Evolution fuel', and there's nothing like that at all on my final order page.

Literally just my drink, the total, and a big 'Place Order' button - which I pressed about three hours ago by mistake, heh.

This is on android tablet btw.
Maybe it's different on phones or IOS.

        • @Stoibs: So you don't get to change the When to place order part like here? https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/18431/51633/screenshot…? If you tap on that you can change the time

        • +1

          @kerfuffle:
Huh, nope. that line of when to place it is completely absent here.

          http://imgur.com/7QqwmHo
(Sorry for imgur, new to ozbargain, dunno how to do the ozbargain upload screenshot thingy)

        • +1

@Stoibs: Interesting. Guess it's a store-based thing like you said.

        • +1

          @kerfuffle:
No Matter, one of the friendliest staff I've met who shared a laugh and recalled that phantom order when I mentioned it remade it for me on the spot. :D

Will just need to keep this in mind for my next 4 coffees ;)
Cheers for the chat and help in any case.

  • After placing an order, do we need to bring the phone or app with us to show them to get the coffee? So, that mean we need to be online to collect coffee? Thanks

    • Nope. The name you registered with on Hey You.. will be the one called out for collection at the cafe.

    • Already asked this question answers vary from; time your coffee perfectly that your name is being called out as you walk in. Order a little later & wait for name to be called so you definitely hear it. Order well in advance helps if you have a non standard order for eg cappuccino 4 sugars

  • Anyone know if it only allows one free coffee at a time?
I tried to order 4 coffees to give out to the team but only getting one free coffee and charging for 3 coffees.

    • Hi Superbass,

Yes you will have to order them all individually.

    • Looks like only the first coffee in the order is free. You have to make 4 individual orders to get them all free.

  • Thanks OP.Sweet deal.Got free coffee this morning in Syd CBD

  • Hey You definitely haven't cancelled the coupon (yet) - I got my free coffee this morning as well

  • Signed up, only two places 'near' where i live. None near work :(
Might drive past and try these coffee places at some point and grab a free coffee anyway :D

  • Confirmed working this morning. Thanks OP.. best coffee deal ever!

  • Worked a treat. Thanks OP!

  • Love it. Signed up. Offer redeemed. Bhorla referral code entered! Winning all round.
