  • Got mine for $1420 last year (preorder) and apparently that was considered cheap. A group of us simply slipped through the australian tax due to a fault on HTC's end. others lucked out

    • How much would you get taxed on these sorts of things?

      • GST if the item is $1000 or more.

    • I slipped through the tax and only paid $1100. Received it on launch day too.

      • I think you'll find it was around $1238 if you purchased it officially through HTC.

Thats what I paid with my 28 degrees, didn't pay tax.

        • I will double check the invoice when I get home - you are probably right I had a charge around that time for $1141 in my bank statement so I was assuming it was that.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to import given it's now $599USD?

The $499USD Xbox One X is only $649AUD. Seems like there's a bit of a discrepancy with the Vive AU price.

    • It's been tailored to the Australian market for tax purposes? :/

    • It is cheaper but Amazon don't ship and all sold out at Newegg. Feel free to post if you find a deal that ships from the US for cheaper.

  • What’s the point of this?

That is only the headset. So please no one order that one unless you are only after the headset.

      • the product description from that site HTC Vive VR Headset

Has the base stations and controllers as well. Just unsure whether you get the free games and 1 month trial. Still a good price if anyone didn't want to buy from Australia.

      • i can understand why you think that with rift only supplying the headset. Htc is and always has been a complete package. Rift you have to buy so much extra just to get it to work

        • -3

What made me think that was them specifically saying headset. The Vive is a complete package.

Rift + touch pack is 550 AUD with the full sensor pack 600 dollars.

The Rift touch controls are far superior to the Vive and the headset is better in some ways (Comfort and headphones) worse in others no bluetooth and slightly less res.

To me the rift is the winner after using both.

          @kasp:

All you do is post all over ozbargain with your biased view.

          Pot meet kettle.

I personally think people might like to know there is a 350 dollar cheaper alternative that arguably could be considered as good if not better by some people (Not you of course)

        • +1

          @kasp:

I agree that the price is a good reason to buy it. But no other reason.

To be honest I much prefer the oculus. Used the Vive and Oculus and the oclus touch controls just shit all over the Vives. Just add a 3rd sensor and it is cheaper, a more comfy headset and has built in speakers and the controllers.

FYI Oculus is currently 650 delivered with the extra sensor. 560 Without.

    • +1

Shame majority think otherwise. Rift is only moving headsets cause they had to slash the price to get the cobwebs off them

      • Yeah not sure why there is so much Vive fanboism.

Hell I loved the vive but after the touch came out it was clear that the rift + touch was the better combo. Especially when it is 300 dollars cheaper.

        • +1

          Fanboy can't see the facts

    • Oculus has poor tracking compared to the Vive.

Depends what games you play of course.

Also new Vive controllers coming are 100x better then Oculus.

      • Compare apples with apples.

You can't go, future controllers which are completely untested, have no release date, price are 100x better than the touch controllers. They might cost 500 bucks for all we know and run like shit.

        https://uploadvr.com/new-ghostline-report-rift-vive-differen…

Oculus with the 3rd sensor performs similarly to the vive. You can also add aditional sensors to increase accuracy even further. Given the price difference of 650 Oculus + touch and 3rd sensor of 850-1000 for the vive it's pretty clear who is the better buy right now.

        • Running 3 webcams with long cables is similar to the wireless sensors vive has yes..

But Vive is still better. Enjoying your Facebook device and being tracked by Them.

        • @samfisher5986:

Well that is your opinion. Noone I know who has used the touch controllers compared with the Vives has come out afterwards and thought the Vive was better. What the vive really has over oculus right now is the initial setup is easier and can be used in a larger space unless you get a 4th sensor. Once the setup is done Oculus seems to be winning.

However it is to be expected as they waited much later before they came out with the touch controllers and then dropped the price so they were heaps cheaper than the vive. It was Vive all the way until that happened.

          @kasp:

Oculus wins in nothing but having better controllers.

But their controllers were late… and vive has even better controllers coming.

There is no reason to want an Oculus except that its cheaper. Facebook sucks.

        • @samfisher5986:

Also being 350 dollars cheaper, and having build in headphones, also being lighter and more comfortable headset. But besides all that has nothing.

But their controllers were late… and vive has even better controllers coming.

But vives better controllers are late…. and oculus has even better controllers coming. lol your hypocrisy is showing.

The Vive is good but right now they aren't the bee's knees. It's happens all the time in technology. After Vive releases a wireless headset and these new controllers I am sure oculus won't be the better pick but until then.

        • @kasp:

What is your source on Vive controllers being late? They never said when they were coming.

And who says Oculus is releasing anything?

Vive already has wireless with tplink.

        • @samfisher5986:

Well you are comparing future controllers against things that are out now.

Oculus has a wireless headset coming out next year but it is an all in one setup.

Yeah but it's a 350 dollar plus attachment. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/sixa-rivvr-wireless-vr-test… that looks a bit more promising for both IMO just because it probably comes with a lower price tag but I suppose it depends how well it works. Then again TP link said they would make one for the rift as well. I think it's a bit expensive and people are better off waiting for an integrated system and save their cash in the meantime.

I think the first one to come out with awesome controllers and an integrated wireless headset combo will be the winner.

        • @kasp:

          That would be vive.

But either way, Oculus is Facebook.

        • @samfisher5986:

Who knows, I don't have an issue with facebook. If you don't have a facebook account then yeah I guess valid comment.

        • @kasp:

Besides the webcams that can monitor you, all the facebook tracking in the software?

The fact that its going to be supported by a tracking/advertising company?

There is a reason why developers chose the Vive.

        • @samfisher5986:

          Which developers?

As its piss easy to support both on most platforms such as unity or ue4. If a dev wants to make a silly decision thats on them. Havent really come across anything that the vive supports thay the oculus doesnt.

If anything theres more content on oculus due to oculus exclusives and they are one of the biggest vr devs. However you can get around that.

        • @kasp:

They develop for SteamVR and port to Oculus. And most developers say they prefer the Vive.

          Go and research it.

        • @samfisher5986:

You do know the oculus works in steam vr right?

        • @kasp:

Yes but check VR games, they don't work that well without specific support because of controllers.

        • @samfisher5986: Fanboys arguing? Never seen that before.

  • Is the price drop simply to get more coverage or is the next iteration on its way?

    • Htc confirmed in article today no new hmd in 2017. No prototype announced which is common for these to have prototype for 6-12months before release

    • they have new controllers and trackers coming out "soon" as well as LGs steamVR compatible HMD rumoured to be end of year so probably pricing this stock cheaper to steal more market share from the much cheaper occulus before better stuff comes out from their own camp.

No official vive 2.0 for at least a year but will be lots of cross compatible gear before then

  • The wireless kit (tpcast) is to be released in the states next month - preorders have sold out on amazon so I cant check how much it is - but using it wireless would be a game changer for me.

  • What (if any) is the performance hit in moving to as wireless medium? uncompressed video (stereoscopic, HD) and audio (7.1+) would require a lot of bandwidth + latency? Or would it be so minor and the freedom of wireless would clearly outweigh (80/20 rule) ??
