Do You Ever Refuse to Park at McDonald's Drive Through ?

So on the weekend I was in a McDonalds drive through, average amount of cars, there was a wait of about 3 mins before I got to the window, my order was for 1 cappuccino and that is it, got to the window and they ask me to park for it.

I refused, then the lady at driver through told her manager that I refused. And within less than a minute my coffee arrived.

Totally get why you have to park when you are ordering a big meal/meal with changes etc, but 1 coffee - I haven't ever done this before, but for my order, I though the request was unreasonable.

Hungry jacks crew here, the reason we park some orders is that we have a drive through timer in the restaurant. We aim to serve all cars in 2:30 starting from they get to the speaker to you at the window. That's why we sometimes park ur car so the timer can go down as much as possible.

    • Thanks for the honesty.. !

    • +1

But thats just cheating the system, your not really serving your customer in 2:30 if u make them park.

      • hahaha i know, its pretty sneaky xD

  • +4

No doubt op is from the kingdom of the entitled.

  • +3

And I hope that for that effort, they added a little something 'special' to your coffee.

  • Agree with your approach. I hate when they mark your order as complete on the system whilst you are still waiting.. allows them to get better KPI's.

    • What do their KPI's matter to you? Yes, it means it looks better for them, but by not doing it, it means you may screw over other customers who have a simpler order that can be handed out before yours.

Do you see how selfish and entitled this is?

  • I'm fine with parking in the designated bay, but being asked to park in the car park because the bays are full and it'll impact poorly on the server's KPIs is where I draw the line.

  • So how was the coffee with fresh-booger topping?

  • +2

Just was at maccas drive through and it was a long wait. Maybe OP was ordering a coffee. Anyway I only ordered a frozen coke, but when i drove up to the window, the attendant apologised for the long wait and offered me a free sundae. Can't fault that

  • ???

  • lol can't believe this deserved a dedicated forum…OP needs to chill….would you rather they make a fresh coffee? or microwave a cup they made in the morning?

  • +3

Would like to remind people that annoying people handling your food isn't the smartest idea

  • +2

OP will be bitterly disappointed finding out the world won't change for him, and that the lesson being changing yourself for the better will be missed…

      5 is not enough

  • +1

It's not about helping the next customer. It's about the timer that's ticking on every order. If they ask a customer to park and the timer resets when the order isn't really complete, it's fraud. It falsely makes their stats look good.

    • +1

Let's get the anti-fraud watchdog onto it.

      • Yeah you do that buddy and bring all your anti-fraud trolls too while you're at it.

        • I'm guessing you're too busy with your tin foil hats to render assistance?

    Just walk in man…

    • …and smell the coffee.

  • +9

Have you considered investing in an 80k car that maccas staff would appreciate? They would then be less likely to make you wait in the bays, as they would perceive you as an important banker most likely

How would you feel if you had ordered something, say a McFlurry, and it was already made and ready for you, but you were stuck in the drive thru behind someone that was doing exactly what you did by refusing to park? You eventually get to the window and they hand your McFlurry that has already started melting due to the inconsiderate douche in front of you.
Maybe next time try putting yourself in the shoes of the other customers. You're not the centre of the universe.

  • +9

It's entitled bullshit like this that makes the world a worse place.

McDonald's epitomises production line efficiency. Coffee does not take 'a minute to fill' - by your own admission you ordered a cappuccino which take a good 2-3 minutes to make, assuming you're at the front of the queue, which given there's a whole indoor restaurant, you likely weren't.

What actually happened was that you got somebody else's order by behaving like a petulant child and insisting that you're more important than everyone else.

Why can't you just do the right thing by people?

  • +4

I get weirded out by the amount of people sitting in the carpark eating whilst the store is half empty..

    • +3

Where else are we going to show off our 80k cars?

    • +1

I've met some of my best friends hanging out in car parks

  • +4

Clearly you have never had a job in fast food. Or hospitality. Or any job that requires customer service. Anywhere.
With that attitude, how can you even afford your coffee? Do companies really want to employ people like you who thinks of no one but themselves?

  • +1

Man this OP guy is even worse than the 80k car investment Westpac analyst. lol

  • +22

Ok, well as a high level manager in one of the stores there are actually a few reasons
    1. Yes we do have timers. im not gonna deny that they are a high focus but its not the be all and end all. different stores have different amounts of time we have to get customers through our drive through

    1. whilst it might be a 1 or two minute wait on your coffee, we might have the next two cars orders ready. if you put yourself in the car behind you's shoes, they want their food just as fast and because you couldn't park, now their food is going cold and they have to wait another minute or two.

    2. its all about trying to please every customer. yes you have ordered a coffee, but inside there might be two more coffee orders before yours, so thats why you have a little bit of a wait.

i cannot speak for the company or any other stores but mine, but its to keep the flow of things going. also, by the time youve finished arguing with the crew and/or managers about 'refusing to go to the waiting bay' you could have gone and already got your coffee

hope this clears a few things up

    • +2

Hi, I have always wondered about this. My local Maccas asks me to move up a bit pass their window everytime, even if there aren't any cars behind me. Does this mean they're cheating when it comes to the awards and points system?

      • +3

It's not an awards or points system really, it's a do this or you suck system. Cars at most stores have to be out by I believe 3:30 mins from you entering to you leaving the drive thru. If you are going to go over that, you will be asked to park. Every store is ranked against each other and there's a screen that shows the top stores and stores in your stores patch. Also we don't want to block simple frozen coke orders up.

        • -3

I love the fries of Macas and Spicy Sauce of HJs, is there any way that your franchise could collaborate with HJs on this topic? I mean, when I am at the food court I usually enjoy the best of both but my meals in suburban Macas are unsatisfying.

          Thanks.

  • And it's because of people like OP I always end up waiting longer.. Nice guys always finish last Kappa

  • +3

Did you parents ever teach you to be patient and kind to people? Without these 2, you'll end up a spoiled brat, which is what you are.

  • -6

You did the right thing. If you want your food, don't park and you will get it faster.
Don't worry about spit, McDonalds food is worse than spit :P

Dear Ozbargain. I would like a way to out myself as a selfish fool and a warrior in my own lunch box. Also to let you know that I drank coffee with spit in it. Mmmm Mmmmm extra foamy! Any ideas on how I could do that?

      • that's just a front because of the replies he's getting. But he posted the question in the first place, so it's clear he actually does care what people think … which is a good thing :)

        • +3

Yeah, none of his other comments indicate he's seen the light, but he could just be playing it cool.

Rule #1 of life: Don't be a douchebag

Rule #2 of life: If you are a douchebag, step up - admit it, apologise, take responsibility and rectify things. If people are angry at you, let them vent (well, up to a point). Bit by bit, you'll become a far better person and life will be so much more freakin' amazing.

Sure, #2 is hard. I've been a dumbass too many times to recall, and I still want to throw out a bunch of excuses to save face. But the harder path is sometimes the best ;)

  • +1

Usually when low on staff like when someone calls in sick service is slow and then customers complain making every customer after them wait slower and also complain. It's a vicious cycle. Just understand that you'll get the best out of them by saying nothing.

  • +1

I don't think they even have an awards system, mcbucks etc for staff anymore. It's just to avoid managenent, franchise owners and area managers coming into the store to yell at and direct you over the shoulder and avoid the annoying stressful buzzer and bell ringing through the store which makes the job suck more.

If they've marked your car as parked it will stay on screen but they'll sometimes clear it by accident or to improve their times.

Drive away from the window as soon as you get your order in hand, don't sit there unwrapping straws and passing out fries to kids in the backseat etc. napkins are in the bag - ask for extra when ordering not after getting your order.

Complain about being rushed through drive through and parked etc to corporate- the staff hate being timed more than you hate being parked.

  • +3

Maccas was one of my first jobs maybe 6 or so years ago, and I really hated when customers were unnecessarily rude or troublesome.

All the comments saying that you aren't the only customer are correct. You're keeping up a queue for people who already have their food ready, and possibly clogging up an already understaffed store.

Just park your car, and try not to complain they were too quick to fulfill your order. There's really no winning for people who just want to complain.

  • +3

  • Jesus wept, first world problems…

  • +2

    Selfish.

They parked you because the person behind you probably had a chocolate icecream or fries or something.
1 coffee still takes time to make.

And in refusing to park, you are unfairly holding up other cars behind you.
The coffee will still take the same time to make, but you've now made all the other people wait to get their food because of your stubbornness.

I hope you got some spit in coffee for your troubles.
Self entitled fool who only thinks about him/herself.

  • +1

Wow. If the responses here have not convinced you that you're a selfish idiot, nothing will. The size of your order is completely irrelevant. Get in line like everyone else.

  • No, because I am not crazy.

  • I refuse to park when there is no line.

  • +1

Those people you were rude to are not the company.
They get told how to do things.
They also get paid minimum wage and are people too.

Try putting yourself in the other person's shoes. They have no power to change how things are done.
Go complain to McDonalds that their drive through process sucks rather than taking it out on customer facing staff.
Be nice to everyone, its free.

    EDIT: Are you Donald Trump?

  • +2

Wow I got to my downvote cap so quickly in this thread…

  • I remember the days that if it didn't arrive within 3 minutes it was free, that's when Maccas and HJ's cared about customers, the sooner Five Guys come here the better to shake our mob up a bit

    • +2

The problem is they've gone too complex. In the old days you had fewer options and the burgers were already assembled.

The fact that most times you can still get it under 3 minutes (quite often straight after you pay for a simple order) is pretty good.

    • I would say our local HJ has to be the worst in Aus. There burger grill thing broke on Thursday so they waited till Tuesday the following week to get it fixed. In the meantime they only sold chicken, which when received was like a hour or 2 old ND we had to go back for a replacement. In this time now that we had got out the car we decided on a free refill would be good but the machine has no ice and was giving hot soda.

While in line waiting for the recook someone complained to the manager who told them "it's ok our customers keep coming back anyway" the poor children who learn their work ethic from that lady…

  • +1

i made an account to comment on this, the OP should seriously quit life

the OP doesnt realise that 1 minute of waiting at the window, the same employee could serve other customers and shorten the queue while the crew prepare the coffee

cant believe the OP even made a post about this, the OP should wake up and learn some manner to respect others

  • +2

This is what's wrong with the world.
I went overseas recently to Taiwan, everyone's polite and respectful there, allowing each other to jump in queue first or randomly asking a bewildered tourist if they're lost and need directions..

Then I went to china. Everyone for themselves!! See a free bench with spot and start walking up to it? Another girl sees you seeing the free seat but she don't care she'll beat you there and take that seat as though it's alright because that's what everyone's doing. That don't make it right though. Same for queuing for anything and anywhere else. Not bashing any races here, I'm bashing the culture.. the 'norm'.. the socially accepted wrongs in society.
Having said that I'm Chinese and I'm ashamed to be.

If only everyone respected each other and helped each other the world would be a better place.

You're a self-righteous and arrogant pleb, people like you should be slapped silly.

Totally get why you have to park when you are ordering a big meal/meal with changes etc, but 1 coffee

Have you ever ordered a coffee from a café before? How do you know the line at the McCafe inside isn't long? You do understand McCafe employs one barista, compared to 7-8 kitchen crew making burgers. As a result, sometimes ordering a coffee will take longer than a big mac meal because of the preparation involved. McCafe dont have a dedicated Drive-Thru Barista sitting on their hands and waiting for a pleb like you to make orders, it's a shared resource between the people at the restaurant ordering a café and the drive-thru. The reason why your coffee came out quicker is because you made a complaint, you're one of these people that has a miserable life and decides to complain about anything, next time you'll get spit in your coffee

  • +1

Omg! The level of entitlement is just too darn high…

It's just a frappe mocha double skim low fat soy latte grande… why is it taking so long?? Don't they know I'm a mother and I have kids in my SUV and that I need to get to the salon to have my nails done? I don't have time to wait!! I want to speak to the manager!

So your life is so much more important than everyone else in line…

  • +OP well done, I'm going to do that next time with a meal, I am sure they will hurry up with my order if I refuse to park and block the drive through, I will also take my time to check the order before leaving and ask for extra napkins if I was not given enough.

  • OP: remember, mcdonalds customers can be of a very specific demographic. dont delay them getting their food!

  • told her manager that I refused. And within less than a minute my coffee arrived

Did you drink that coffee? I would be more skeptical about that. Haven't you heard about the "don't (profanity) with people who handles your food".

  • +2

If only people could be removed from OzB for being douches.

Also check out the OP's post history, 73 posts of asking where to buy stuff. Obviously a taker in the world and never a giver.
Not a positive for OzB community let alone the wider community in the world, shown by not being able to wait an extra moment for coffee.

  • I've never refused to park, but I did ask at my local maccas why they always made me park for normal sized orders (big mac combo) through to the family boxes. They said it's because they have to cook the fries fresh and it can take around 2 mins. I just go to the maccas a bit further away and I never have to wait, tastes the same.
