  • I thought they didnt make these anymore?

    • Gen 10 just announced last month. Good little upgrade - long time coming

        Would still take a Gen8 w/iLo etc.

Definitely not the upgrade any current owners were looking for..

      • +3

No iLo and is has a soldered-in CPU?

Seems like a downgrade. The lack of iLo is a real killer.

        • +3

Back to AMD as well. A bit meh. I need an upgrade from my N36L's but this isn't it.

Might be tempted if they drop to $170 shipped like my first microservers.

  • I've been thinking about a NAS for a while to run my plex server. Eventually when NBN hits my area I want to be able to let family stream off my server to their homes. Is the QNAP TS-251 ok for this or should I be looking at the quad core QNAP TS-251+ or would this HPE Microserver Gen10 be the go? Any advice would be appreciated.

They are both poor options. Not enough horsepower for multiple transcodes, especially since you will be compressing it to get it over the internet faster. The quad core maybe but its still a very low powered CPU. Maybe the WD PR2100/4100 since they have GPU accelerated transcoding but they are expensive for what you get. I would definitely go the DIY route using commodity hardware or used server parts since reliability of data is not a huge issue for media storage.

      • That WD is a bit more than I wanted to spend. Thanks for the input might have to knock up my own server.

I've got Plex runnng on my Gen8 and it can handle 1 stream transcoding, but if you want any more, I would suggest one of the Intel i5 NUC instead and a cheaper WD storage combo.

      • Might go down this path. I wonder if I could just get the qnap for now and then hook it up to a nuc/a custom server later.
        Thanks for your advice.

        • It really depends on your situation, if you are looking to just use the NAS as a storage for media and have Plex run as a portal/library organiser, then that will be fine for you. But if you want to stream to your family at their house on day one, then you will be looking to go Plex Premium and then this won't work for you unless you use your desktop computer as the plex server and leaving that one all day, but then that defeats the purpose of having the setup we're talking about here and probably the need for a NAS at all.

certainly a dumbgrade compared to my gen8.

    • Certainly an odd choice to drop ilo on the gen10.
Had they kept it I'd see this as a nice upgrade once prices fall.

  • +1

On the upside, due to how lame the spec of these are compared to gen8, we should see the price of these plummet when HP has warehouses full of them to clear out.

  • Comparison of how the Gen10 stacks up against previous micro servers. I have not had an issue with plex transcoding on the g1610t Celeron gen8, but generally I only run one stream at a time.

    HP microserver comparison table

    • Yes that's my setup as well
