I Think I've Gone off Domino's

For years, I've been a huge advocate of Domino's.
They've never been "amazing" but they've sold reasonable quality food at a reasonable price and have done so reliably. This is, to me, the absolute definition of "value", value doesn't mean "cheap" to me, it means "a good return for what you've paid".

However, with the addition of Sunday surcharges, I've found it better value to go to a local pizza store that doesn't add Sunday surcharges.
Pizza's are now smaller
Vouchers are now worse value, we used to be able to get 3 pizzas, garlic bread and drink for $19.95, now we have mostly "30% off" deals, now the same thing would cost around $28.95 - well I say the same thing, I mean the shrunken thing. And that's before you add on any surcharges.

Have you found yourself buying less Domino's recently?

  • I haven't purchased Domino's since they removed the cheese-burst crust, that was the only redeeming feature of Domino's pizzas for me.

i put dominos in the "cheap & nasty" category, will only have it out of necessity.

…only at midnight when there's no other choices!
(or it's way too cold to walk to ChinaBar!)

There's nothing like those late night china bar feasts!

$5 pizzas before 9pm or nothing.. I have ordered delivery out of necessity because they are the only "cheap" delivery besides Thai in my area and during winter the cold can be annoying.

When they do their buy 1 get 1 free traditional pizzas I might try something "fancy" but yeah $5 pepperoni and veg trio was my staple dinner for a while when I couldn't cook or keeping vegetables around was not a good idea (rats).

  • +3

Only get them if theyre free, otherwise would rather go to my local pizza shop and pay a bit more and actually enjoy it

  • Haven't eaten domino's for more than 2 years.
they have been shit for along time now

  • +2

Yes, they were good value a few years ago, but not so much now. To much silliness with reducing the menu, the price rises and voucher nonsense, means I've lost much of my appetite for them.

Customers gained by lower prices are just as easily lost when the price goes up and the quality goes down.

Maybe I'll lose a few Kgs as a result. ;-)

Despite what people say I'm sure a blind taste test would show Dominos as being decent.

I agree with the value point - unlike Bunnings which had the ability to undercut, get market share, and then be the only store in town and raise prices - takeaway is a competitive market. It's going to be hard for Dominos to sell pizzas consistently for $10-15.

  • Dominoes is shit. Refuse to eat it! and I dont know how all these people do! Coles homebrand frozen pizza is better! FROZEN

How about those $5 pizzas? Not good value?

    • Great value takeout - $5, can fill two people (depending), and ready in 10 mins.

      Too bad it's not healthy.

  • I used to work for Domino's, and back then I would only eat pizza that I made myself when the boss is not around.
Safe to say, after I stopped working there I have only eaten Domino's when it is in the middle of the night and no other options left.

    • once you've had "i work here and will make it myself when the boss isn't looking" pizza its hard to go back, 1 cup of kabana you say how about 4

They're not THAT bad but on the rare occasion that we do have a pizza, I'd rather pay the extra and go to Pizza Capers or a small, independent shop down the road.

Where is the "I only eat Dominos' option?

  • +3

They took away the Americano from the value range and I haven't forgiven them since.

  • The only time I eat dominos is when I have mates over and we need a cheap and quick feed.

Fully agree with OP on this one.
Dominoes pizzas have been getting smaller over time and the prices going up.
The voucher deals too are not as good as they were a year or 2 ago.
My favourite Extra value range @ $5.95 has been dropped
Though in Dominoes defence they are still good pizzas and well priced on the deals such as $7.95 traditional pizzas and hard to beat the $5.00 deal.
I would never buy a full priced dominoes pizza as these are terrible value!

it was only a matter of time before this happened, the race to the bottom on price had to make something give eventually, pizza hut already has basically all the same issues op mentions about domino's so its no surprise they would eventually go the same way

It already takes a real good deal to make domino's worth it for me so i guess all that is changing is how good that deal has to be and given pizza hut hasn't come close in a long time thats going to be hard

  • I know "someone" who works at Domino's, just wanted to let you all know, they are getting ridding of Chef's Best pizza range as of next week! They were good, when they were cheap!!! : )

Had one today.. got the "NEW" super small/shrunk/mini sized pizza.
Goodbye Dominos…. you can't pull stunts like that on customers and stay in business.

  • I think a lot of people here are being unfair, or maybe their local dominos is just bad. The one at kensington, NSW is usaully very good. At $8 or $9 per traditional pizza, thats only $4-4.50 per meal for one person…that is amazing when the average cost of eating out is $10 and most of the time, you dont even get full because the restaurant or whatever has given you a tiny portion.

  • There is one good thing about a Dominos Pizza. I have seen then roll out the fresh pizza dough with the dough spinner and flat roller machines before making my pizza. So you can be garanteed its very a freshly cooked base. The toppings are tiny and very processed, e.g. the beef cubes or ham. Cheese is mediocre compared to better mozzarella - cheddar blends that can be bought at a supermarket. The olive rings are tiny and bitterly bland….. they are not like top quality brands like Sandlehurst found in you supermarket. if some of these toppings were bought in bulk the inferior nature of ingredients would equate to you are paying for nearly no weight… because of the miniscule cuts. If you wonder why are they so cheap its because of this inferior small toppings with little weight. The cabanossi is a micro millimeter thick and tastes rough as guts (fatty). No salami follower would ever buy this for a Friday night treat with some wine. The sauce is acidic and overly synthetically tangy like a cheap tomato ketchup. Its not even close to tasting like a nice italian tomato napolitana sauce. You pay for what you get here so you end up with a nice base covered with cheap bits of meat and vegetable that cost near nothing to buy for the franchise. They cant make anything taste like quality. My advise is Dominos just make pizza bases and let some one else add the toppings because you dont have any integrity at all for quality food. You might want to try melting a mars bar on top of the base and call it a MARS BAR pizza thats how corny and patronising it gets !

  • No longer cheap, better off go to mum and dad pizza shop for better pizza
sneaky trying to reduce the size, time for some punishment and no more dominos
